new r.o. system

I am in the middle of a kitchen remodel and need to connect my old r.o. system. My questions is, can I connect it directly to the fridge and bypass the faucet (this will eliminate drilling hole in new counters.)?

Do I have to do anything to the fridge filter when I connect it to the r.o. line.

And finally, what R.O. system should I look for if I decide to replace my old unit? (which brands and best places to buy)

I am on a well with a softner.

Connecting the RO to the fridge and having no faucet is not typically the set up, but it will cause no concern if done properly.

I would still consider putting in a faucet for convenience. It will provide a faster flow.

There are many ROs out there. My preference is the Kinetico RO due to its unique features and excellent benefits. In fact a new one coming out this month that is customizable to handle a wide range of water issues including arsenic, VOCs, bacteria/virus, or even adding calcium back into the water.

I'd recommend an inline shut off valve on the 1/4" PE running from the RO/storage tank to the fridge. A great safety feature and an easy way to turn off the water to replace the fridge filter. Not a bad idea to put one ahead of the RO either.

I put a Watts system under my sink a few months ago. We're quite satisfied with it. Installation was straightforward EXCEPT...you need to have a sink with an available opening to mount the R/O treated water dispensing valve, or be prepared to use a hole saw to drill one. Drilling a hole in my OLD cast iron sink was impossible without buying a tool that would have cost as much as a new sink.....so we got a new sink and faucet. [It was time to replace them anyway.] The R/O valve is mounted in the hole intended for the soap dispenser.

The air gap is there to prevent backflow of waste water to your faucet. Your set-up, since the drain line is not connected to another drain line, serves the same purpose. It may not be code, but it certainly addresses safety issues adequately.

An experienced window person should be able to work from your glass size to get a matching window. Working from rough opening on an old wooden window with sash weights, you'll end up with the new window sash about 4" wider than the old, the increase coming from the weight pockets. IMHO, glass size, sash size, or unit size would be a better way to match what you have. Casey

Ditto about the Kinetico system if you want to go new. I've got two of them. Trouble-free for 16 years.

Thanks for the feedback. I am still considering the faucet idea. Where is the best place to buy the kinetico system and what size or model do you recommend?

I bought mine from dealer. They installed. Suspect system available today better/easier than the one I have but don't know for sure.
