R/O and air gap

My Whirlpool R/O system (Model WHER18) came w/ an air gap integrated w/ the faucet. Is this really necessary? My discharge goes down through floor into basement and then into sump pit (there is gap between water surface of sump pit and discharge tube).. Can I bypass the airgap? Obviously, I can live w/ air gap.. Only issue is that it's noisy (it gurgles).

Thx for any info.
