Canned Crab & Cheez Whiz??

I've seen for years but never had any desire to make it. Considering that I have a couple of cans of crab meat, my guests are pigs-in-a-blanket crowd, and I don't have much time--would this be acceptable? Has anyone had this retro-recipe? Now that sounds pretty snobbish, I certainly don't mean it that way.

CRAB APPETIZERS

1 stick butter

6 oz. Cheez Whiz

1 1/2 tsp. mayonnaise

1/2 tsp. garlic powder

1/2 tsp. seasoned salt

1 (7 oz.) can drained crabmeat

12 English muffins

Combine all ingredients together except English muffins. Mix well. Spread on English muffins. Cut into quarters. Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes.

I have a bunch of these in my freezer now. My crowd loves them and they are easy to make ahead and freeze. Too bad the snow storm is going to put a damper on my party tonight. (Central VA)

I'd eat and enjoy it but I have to fess up to loving Cheese Wiz.

I have a really easy recipe for canned crab that is delish if you are ify. I made up the name becasue it is that simple

Cup, Cup and a Can

1 cup real Mayo
1 cup white cheddar or Parmesan (never used another cheese but bet you could)
1 can crab (or canned artichokes drained and chopped)

Mix all together. Put in a small oven proof dish, Bake at 375 until bubbly and slightly golden on to...maybe 15 minutes.

My Mom cans meat, especially chicken, and uses it in soups and stews. It's pretty good -- add some noodles and vegetables and you have instant chicken noodle soup. I probably wouldn't go to the trouble, myself, but I have a big freezer and live somewhere with a stable electric grid. I used to live somewhere without a very stable electric grid, making a freezer much less attractive for preserving foods. A lot of stuff on that list I can understand the why (Cheese Whiz being the major exception). When your friend has an avocado tree, asks if you want some, and then and shows up with 2 paper grocery bags full, you gotta wonder what it looks like at their house. :) I think what most people don't grasp is that foods like bacon and cheese are already preserved. Just because they aren't shelf stable for 3 years at room temperature doesn't mean their lifespan hasn't already been considerably elongated.

Kids that age like to graze, so everything should be small finger foods - pigs in blankets is a good suggestion, as is mini cheeseburgers (sliders), chicken nuggets, chips and dips, strips of red/yellow/orange peppers and cukes with dip, hunks of cheese, strips of meat, etc, etc. They don't need a lot of carbs, except for dessert. I would love to try some Crab Potato Chips. I agree with the Russians that Lay's Potato Chips are boring. I try not to buy too many snack foods, but I do keep tortilla chips on hand and occasionally buy potato chips to have with a dip I make with sour cream, fresh dill, garlic, lemon juice, black pepper and mayo. It tastes very similar to Ranch dressing, but with a brighter, fresher flavor. I also use it as a sauce for fish in place of tartar sauce. I do buy Japanese snack when I go to the Japanese market, but they are pretty expensive and seem to be mostly air, at least the sembei crackers that I buy do. I like the flavors, however, and Kevin buys Japanese black chewing gum. I've found that I do not particularly like the Vietnamese snacks that I've had, but I find kimchee to be addictive. I'm not sure if it qualifies as a snack, but I eat it between meals, and it is very satisfying. I do not see why people should not put cereal in coffee - I think it would be similar to dunking biscotti. I've always noticed that Mexico had a much better selection of fruit drinks available than we do, although we are getting more of them as the Latin population increases. My favorite juice drink is guanabana, which I first had in Mexico in the mid 1970s. Back then I could not find it here, but that has changed. I've noticed Japanese snacks creaping into the main markets here, but I have not noticed too many other ethnic snacks, other than Mexican, which I do not consider foreign, since they were always readily available in Texas. Have you found other ethnic snacks in the markets that you would recommend? I'm sure there are many that I have just overlooked. Lars

Okay - you asked for it! Here are my "dirty little secrets" LOLOLOL! Easy Creamy Peppercorn Chicken Rated: 4 out of 5 by 22 members Yields: 6 servings "A quick mushroom gravy, courtesy of soup and a packet of peppercorn gravy mix, smothers chicken and onions. Rice is a must-have side dish." INGREDIENTS: 4 skinless, boneless chicken breasts 1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup 1 packet peppercorn gravy mix 1 onion, sliced into thin rings 1 cup water DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (205 degrees C). 2. Place cleaned chicken breasts in a 9 x 13 inch glass baking dish or casserole dish. Arrange the sliced onion pieces evenly on top of the chicken pieces. Scoop the mushroom soup onto the chicken and onions. Mix the peppercorn gravy with water and pour it over the soup, onions and chicken. 3. Cover the dish and bake for 1 hour, stirring the chicken and mixture after 30 minutes. If desired, serve over rice or with mashed potatoes ********************************************************* Mushroom Pie Crusts for a 9"pie (top & bottom) 2 hard boiled eggs, sliced (optional) 1 tbsp butter 14 16 oz fresh button mushrooms, sliced 1 stalk celery ½ cup onion chopped 1 can Cream of Mushroom soup ½ cup chopped walnuts S&P Saute the celery, onions and mushrooms in butter until they give off the liquid and it evaporates. Yep....I've had it and enjoyed it....it's really not too bad...but I don't remember the butter....thought it was just crab, mayo, and cheeze whiz.....and mine had a vew capers or chopped green onion on top.

We have made this many times using Kraft's Old English jar cheese; it's a little less competition for the crab than Cheez Whiz would be, and the crab needs to be the star here in Baltimore. Also here in B'more, we use fresh cooked "canned" crabmeat, not what is available in the canned fish aisle.

CRAB MUFFINS

6 English muffins
Â½ cup butter or margarine
1 5-ounce jar Old English cheese
Â½ teaspoon garlic powder
Â¼ teaspoon salt
Â¼ teaspoon black pepper
1 Tablespoon minced onion
1 7-ounce can crab meat
Paprika (some use Old Bay instead)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Split the English muffins.
Beat together butter or margarine and cheese. Add garlic powder, salt, pepper, and minced onion. Drain crab meat well and squeeze dry. Gently add crab meat to cheese mixture.
Spread on muffins and sprinkle with paprika. Cut into sixths or eights for appetizers, or leave as open halves for sandwiches. Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet for 2 minutes.

When crabmeat is not in the budget, we do make these with canned tuna, and they're still good, but please don't tell any Maryland natives.

Yep, my recipe uses the Olde English cheese spread in a jar also. I love these things! My friend who gave me the recipe calls them "Crabbies."

Crabbies it is! I did see several recipes that call for Olde English cheese spread.

Having been to Baltimore Harbor, I agree about the crab being the star!

I've never seen Olde English Cheese Spread in a jar. Is it the same as Kraft Imperials Cheese...sharp and sorta crumbly?

Must be the same as Imperial Cheese Sharon, because I make the same recipe, but with a tub of Imperial cheese. They're great and a must-have around here during the holidays.

I have never had that particular appy, but my girlfriend makes a dip that is very similar. She uses either canned or imitation crab meat, Velveeta, butter and garlic powder. It is really good with triscuits!
