poodle week at the GP
Comments (15)Digby - great name, Marda and he looks a handsome lad. Love those curls. I'm so happy for everyone - even the cats. They are going to love showing how they run the house:) Josh, I once named a dog Deoge and a cat Ceatee. Seemed easier. My present dogs are Scoop, named because her breeder owned an icecream parlor and Rags...well, he looks like he's in tatters....See Moreany toy poodle breeders in Maine
Comments (5)My neighbs one house down have very young children and they have two toy poodles. The dogs are older than the kids. No problems that I am aware of. I think you have good reason to be concerned with rescuing a toy. First of all, they are all too often treated like human children and spoiled rather than like dogs, setting what Cesar Millan would call "rules boundaries and limitations". This sets the dog up for a number of behavior issues and it doesn't surprise me that a lot of toys would be aggressive toward children and/or finding one that isn't totally neurotic could be challenging. Almost a year ago, I began the arduous task of finding a breeder for a pretty uncommon breed. I joined a mailing list for the people that had years of experience in the breed's community and I asked them who of the breeders I found were reputable. They even had a breed association website which posted all the litters that were happening in the world at that point from registered member breeders which do the testing and all that. So that's how I found my breeder. You may ask someone who is their breeder then ask the breeder what they do with the dogs like health testing... cerf, ofa, all of that which applies. If showing the dog is important to you I guess you need to talk about that. And when puppies are very young it's important that breeders expose them to people and have people handle them and expose them to interesting sights and sounds. I'd imagine there's quite a bit of competition in the toy poodle breeding, maybe you can even find a breeder who teaches the puppies some basic obedience commands by the time their ready to leave. It's not the easiest of processes and frankly I don't think it can get any easier than adoption but adopting isn't for everyone. You aren't starting with a blank slate. Puppies are a giant pain in the rump with all the training and socialization you must do. At least the good thing is you know that with a puppy that training and socialization is getting done....See MorePoodle Skirts for the 50th day of School

Comments (6)The bottom line is that you can only train a dog when you are there. When you are gone the dog is on its own to figure out what to do. Your problem is that the dog has a behavior that you want to change, but you can't be there to change it. I don't know what to tell you other than stay home and train the dog, or find a way to live with the problem. Well, there are some ways around it but they all involve hiring someone to do be there for the dog when you are not. The first is put the dog in day care where they are taken outside regularly. Of course this has lots of other advantages that enhance the dogs life - but it comes at a cost. The other has already been mentioned - hire a dog walker to come by and take the dog out for a mid-day walk. This is much cheaper, but it is an additional cost. Dogs really aren't built for regularly spending 8 or 9 hours alone. Some very independent breeds and older dogs can deal with it. But companion dogs (which generations ago the poodle was crossed with to get the size down) do not like to be away from their owners at all. It is very stressful for them because their "job" is to keep you company. The toy poodle has half those instincts and half the hunting instincts of its larger brethren. See what you can do to break up the day for the dog. Also lots of lots of early morning exercise will help because it will tire him out before you leave....See MoreMeghane
