Camera Question

My sister wants to buy this camera..she wants an SLR ...this says SLR "style"...is it an SLR?? I would think it is, but before she buys it she wants to make sure. I've never seen one described this way....anyone take a look and see? I tried calling their customer service but they are closed now.

No, it's not an SLR, but I'll bet it's a nice camera. It's got lots of features, and Olympus has a good reputation for quality.

If your sister wants a DSLR she's going to have to pay at least twice that price......especially if she wants one with a lens.

Thanks...I thought it was too cheap.....was going to get it myself if it was!! It does look like a nice one though!

My sister went from some sort of little compact straight into the Rebel without any problems, marbles intact. The Rebel has a wonderful feature that figures all that for you. This little knob on the top has pictures of a flower for macro, a mountain for landscapes, a face for protraits, etc. Or you can read that manual that was originally written in a Chinese or Japanese, then translated into English. I hate to admit it, but I rarely venture into the alleged wonderland of f-stop/apeture/white balance manipulation. I did take a class back in the 80's that taught me how to use a 35mm camera. But I get pretty good shots just using the Rebel's automatic features. The most I use out of the automatic realm is the focus. Particularly if you're using macro, you will need to decide what you want to focus on. That's the beauty of the DSL, you can be lazy, or get creative and tweak the controls yourself. You get great pics either way.

Hi Ellen- If you're not worried about the $20, it can't hurt to try it. I've seen those, and from what I understand, they are "ok" little cameras with no frills. They even have them in the kids section. I've never tried them, but they can't be any worse than what people take with a cell phone. Having said that, I've seen several types of cameras for just a little more that and are very decent. Target is VERY good about sales, and you can usually tell when a camera is about to come out with a new model there because the sales get deeper & deeper. Seems to me I saw one the other day that was 79.99 or so. That's what I paid for my Lumix just before they came out with a new model a couple years ago. If you're simply looking for a beginner's camera, or a "nothing fancy" model that will take decent pictures for home use, there's no need to spend over $100, since what is available at and under that price are quite good for general point & click picture-taking. There's usually a sale on some model going on so you don't have to pay too much. The learning curve to the whole uploading & posting thing is minimal, since your new camera will likely come with software, and even if it doesn't, your computer will likely have something on it to get your pix uploaded for you. There are a number of photo hosting sites out there; I personally use Photo Bucket, and find it very easy to use. Oh, here's a thought: Google that camera model you saw and add the word 'review' to the end of your search text to see if anyone has opinions on them. If you can't remember the model, I bet a search for "cheap digital camera review" or "$20 digital camera" would also work to find you some information. And if you're really into looking up user review type stuff, I bet there's a photography forum (google that term) somewhere that you might find answers, too. Good luck!

Canon 20D. I love it, took a lot of getting used to, faster than I thought, had a lot of tips and good help and got it at an especially good deal at the time, brand new, from a Canon-authorized dealer (an important consideration for the warranty while it lasts). For as thorough camera discussion as I've seen lately, look on the OGR forum where someone was looking for camera recommendations, maybe on page 2 or 3 now. Some of it was simple and some too technical for many to grasp except those willing to do some homework which you should do regardless, covered both point and shoot cameras and dslr's, not all models of either but a good cross section. Every single one has its pro's and cons. I love mine because it had the least noise at the time which is a big consideration for low light situations allowing me to get a shot where even the best flash or time exposure would not work. I have a separate flash for mine which I love, cumbersome at times but worth it. For me it depends on being able to capture as many different photographic situations as I can be equipped to do, indoors w/flash or no flash, outdoors, landscapes, animals, birds, long-exposure night photos, near or far, will never get one very expensive lens, and flowers which are a big interest but only one on many. Some p&s that have large apertures may be more flexible indoors, am not read up on that laterly. Some of those situations you can capture with a point and shoot once you gain experience, but not all. They are not generally good indoors except at closeup using the onboard flash. They do have in-camera sharpening which requires the least post processing compared to all dslr's. Sometimes I can get by with only cropping/resizing and nothing else, some don't seem to notice but I can tell the difference even at smaller sizes. Most produce good quality, depending on your expertise, regardless of which camera, but with larger prints, there is a big difference. I'm not one to jump into an upgrade every time many others do it, would rather now have the 40D, but by the time I decide I may be ready for something else, they will have yet a new model or several. I always shoot RAW and at the largest size and quality possible and do not have enough storage with 2 hard drives and back up for 10 mp photos, like the lcd and self-cleaning sensor on the 40D although latter doesn't always work over time. No consumer camera I know of will capture all night photos if the subject is moving without blur except light trails from moving cars or distant stars and galaxies are interesting or for special effects.

Hi Linda, I'm not sure I'm going to be much help, but here goes. The 2240 x 1493 is an appropriate size for images coming out of your camera. You wouldn't want to change them to 640 x 480 in the camera because you wouldn't be able to print them at that resolution. So the question becomes whether or not Photobucket automatically resizes them upon uploading. I wasn't aware that they ever did this, but they must have if you remember uploading without resizing. I keep a folder on my desktop of resized photos for emailing and uploading to Photobucket and Flickr. I've never tried to upload a full-size file. However, it's easy to resize photos that are already on Photobucket. Just click on Edit (right above the image), then Resize, and follow the instructions. There's a preset 640 x 480 that you can use if you like. Hope this helps. Susan

Yes. It's the body style.
I have the previous version of that camera shown.
I like the weight of it and it is stable to hold.
Mine was a lot more money than this, but I love the camera.
I couldn't justify the 3 times the price (they have all come down). Maybe someday.

I have a similar Canon model, the Canon i5 IS. I like the cameara a lot. I also have two Canon DSLRs, a D30 and a 10D (both older models now). The i5 IS has a lot of options. You can get (and I have) a good zoom lens. There are also wide angle and macro lenses availabe. However, it doesn't have the flexibility that you get with a DSLR. There are a lot more options with the DLSR. On the plus side, the i5 IS is much smaller and lighter weight, so is easier to carry.

Yes. It's the body style.

No that not quite it.

D-SLR uses a mirror to reflect the picture inside the camera. The mirror swings up and the shutter opens and the picture is projected onto the image sensor.

With a regular point-and-shoot - the image is constantly projected. That is why you can use the view screen on the back to focus and take your picture.

You cannot use the viewscreen on the back of the D-SLR to take your picture on some D-SLR. You have to look through the viewfinder. Some of the newer high end D-SLR have Live View

Unless you REALLY want a DSLR - the point and shoots are so nice.

Much easier to use - and so much less to lug around.

I think the deciding factor would be: AUTO

If you are a person who sets the camera on AUTO - get a point and shoot...if you like the manual settings - go for a D-SLR.

Remember with an Olympus - you will need XD cards. They are not hard to find, but the are not as common as the SD.

I have 2 Fuji's similar to this one but this has more features..and a bigger zoom. My newest Fuji is now 2-3 years old and has a 10x zoom. I love my camera, but always needing more options! I use the settings on it more and more as I learn them. It uses xd cards and I have plenty of those. DH bought this one for me last night for a late anniverary gift! My sister ended up getting one too, she can't justify 600.00+ when she's a beginner! I told her this would get pictures as good or better than my Fuji 700. This looks like a good camera for the price, the SLR style threw me and I was a bit leery to assume to her that it was. Sounded like a play on words to me. Thanks for you advice and knowledge!

Well I meant that the body style was like a SLR. Inside is a whole nother ball game. Agreed about the automatic settings. If you don't like to fiddle - why buy more than you need?
