Oven and Broiler both quit Christmas morning

As the title says the oven and broiler both stopped working Christmas morning. ( igniters were not working) Luckily the rib roast was fine on the gas grill. 1/2 hour over direct heat than balance of the time in a hotel pan so I could accumulate some juices and fond for gravy. All that aside I think I need a small back up oven or oven like appliance. Any ideas?

Good save! I imagine the roast was very tasty, cooked that way.

As for emergency appliances, a good toaster oven is very useful. I use mine for smaller things, saves time and energy heating up the big oven.

Everyone seems to love their Breville. I don't have one, and like my Krups, but I think my model has been discontinued.

However, you wouldn't be able to fit the turkey or big rib roast in there.

So the other thing to consider is a Nesco roaster. Everyone seems to love that appliance as well. We have one, and have sometimes done the turkey in it while using the oven for sides and pies. It is plenty large enough to handle the main roast beast, while your toaster oven takes care of the sides, allowing you to recover gracefully from an ill-timed oven failure.

The grill worked better than I had hoped. With the temperature outside in the low 30's I wondered if I could get it hot enough. With all the burners on and the anbient temp working with each other it stayed at 375 for the entire time it was on the grill. Wife was happy thats all that mattered.

I will look into the breville and the nesco

Update. Mojavean who appears possibly no longer around, is a sterling soul, IMHO. This post has just kept on giving. More recently, Rues Savel seems to have benefited and just easily replaced the offending fuse. I've had a harder time with that, only because the correct, safe replacement is hard to locate. A few folks want me to "just use this, it's good enough", but I want the exact same one that was there. Inside the unit is a huge warning sign, and it just seems they really mean it about getting the replacement 100% correct. First, the part number listed above is proprietary and Miele's and they won't sell it to me. I managed to figure out and translate that to these specs: 12Amp, 250Volt, "T" ("time-lag"?), class H ("ceramic"?). Not at: car parts store, local hardware, local appliance supplier, local appliance repairer (2), local electric supply house. But the guy at Littlefuse.com was great. 1 773-628-1000 And guess who else has been FABULOUS? The guys who sold me this unit: abt.com . 888-228-5800 . They are amazing. I recommend anyone to buy any appliance they have through these guys. I have had so many occasions over the years to love love love these guys. This is just the latest. (they've overnighted damaged stuff, argued my case in out-of-warranty matters, etc, but all different stories). After calling Miele twice and being told nicely but firmly that they won't supply any schematics or any help on this and that the service call is a minimum $245 before parts, a repair tech where I bought it has been unbelievably helpful and supportive on the phone. I would give his name but perhaps that's not fair without permission. He works as a repairer for ABT, which is a brick/mortar store in Chicago that also sells online. He's been amazing. After explaining that capacitors can store thousands of volts even after the unit is unplugged and therefore having laymen mucking about inside isn't exactly wise, just his encouragement and verification allowed me to locate the correct part on my own and test it and figure out the issues. Also with mojavean's help. I wouldn't probably have had the courage without his gruff explanations and/or perhaps I might not have had the lifebreathe if I had forged ahead in barefeet tapping everything randomly with a metal screwdriver (OK, I wouldn't have done that but the reminder has been good). So failing to find the part locally means I must wait a few days to see if it's all going to work. As well as to determine whether there's programming fiddling that needs happening too. But I'm hopeful not. I still have never located a service manual or any sort of sense for sure about what's going on. There is a red-housed thingymabob that looks like there's a bit of carbon up top suggesting the possibility of a short. I hope not, but, it's possible this fuse blew for another reason than old age. It was not the 10A but a 12A. Everyone worries that the doors are off-kilter tripping the fuse for safety reasons. The doors don't seem to be uneven but .... we'll see. Mr. Littelfuse sells by the gazillions so he just set a "sample" single into the mail for me. It's funny, my local hardware is filled with the most horrible, trogladytic males imaginable. But these days, just about everyone else has gotten over their y-chromosome, seemingly, and is kinda pleased to work with a female on this stuff (that did not used to be the case). It's really nice, I gotta say. When I called the autoparts guy he asked that I come see him especially and said it was such a pleasure to meet me. Sometimes some things do change. I can post photos if that might be helpful for posterity. I might wait and see if I've actually really fixed this first!

Gary I think I once had an electric "stove" with a burner like that "sealed electric burner" for awhile. Agree that induction can provide a great range of heat and generally even heat unless there is an issue with the pan. For gas though, there seem to be features attributed to "open" in the open/sealed debate that are really due to other factors. There are several components of cooking that can contribute to a cooking surface that applies heat evenly to your food. You could look at the configuration of the burner ports. Open, sealed or semi open as in the old Wolf burner, there are attempts to make a better pattern of distribution by increasing the number of ports and spreading them out in concentric ports and putting them in a star shape. The most advantage would be for a pan that does not conduct heat well, like cast iron or a very thin pan. They must be sized to the burner though, as you size a pan to an electric burner. The second aspect is considering the size of the pan in relation to the heat pattern of the burner. Once you have a pan, like cast iron, that is bigger than the burner,even though the heat is distributed evenly over a 6 inch circle, you have a hot spot in the middle of the pan. I use 14 inch pans quite a bit and so with my 14 inch CI pan I am better off with a larger ring of heat that would cut the total area of the pan roughly in half unless I could find a star burner 12 inches wide. The flip side is a burner that is too wide for the pan. You then have the heat going either to the very outside or completely around the pan. An open burner on the highest setting will produce a flare but the extent to which this happens depends on how the burner is engineered. Here is a picture of the 30 inch Wolf cooktop compared to 30 inch BS and even when you consider the flare really only on the highest burner setting, the burner is much smaller to begin with so might accommodate a smaller pan easier than the BS. People on this forum tend to focus on the heat source because it is an appliance forum not a cooking forum. To get the most even heat in many more situations, don't worry about the burner but the interface of the food to the burner--the pan. Use a good heavy copper pan and not only will heat be even across the bottom but even up the sides as well. Heat will be coming evenly from all directions. If you can't swing copper use heavy aluminum. Last week, I did use a commercial range with star burners, (with almost no void of burner ports in the middle) with a cast iron pan. It was well sized to the burner so heated well. It had a very poor low end of heat but I'm sure I could work around that if I had to. I have cooked on other commercial ranges as well. I still do like my sealed burners for home due to the great control of the flame especially the low end. I can certainly see people making other choices though. I am currently using my range but due to the issues with the "blue chips" I will at some point replace it. I may have to reconfigure my kitchen to accommodate a rangetop and I am not sure what that will be. Maybe I will get a CVAP for the oven. They are supposed to be coming out with a residential version.

LOL, we have always stored our broiler pan IN the oven as well !! Like the idea of the cast iron pan / grill plate. Also, the one from Vermont Country Store is pretty ! LOVE the idea of checking at Goodwill. I will check there and if I can't find one, I will probably order at ABT ... $15 for the pan and free shipping if you spend $25. At first, I was wondering if I'd really slipped a cog and left something plastic on the meat, but I reminded myself I'd thoroughly dried it, so that wasn't possible. Thank goodness my son spied the smoldering hot pad tucked back where I couldn't see it, when I was putting the temperature probe in one of the roasts. I checked a bit later, and there wasn't even any odor left in the oven, which was a relief, and gave me good hope that the meat hadn't been too affected. I couldn't tell if the outside tasted a little odd, or it was just my imagination. With a prime rib surrounded by a good layer of fat, and the rack of ribs, the edible part was pretty well protected. As I said, it'll just be the year that spawns "remember when Mom cooked the hot pad for dinner?" Happy New Year everyone!

With my luck, the grill would have been out of propane, too. Nice save. Isn't that always the way? The day you need it most is when something breaks. I wonder if a Nesco roaster wold have helped this time.

I second the Nesco roaster! I think my big one is a GE, but it is probably as old or older than I am. It was my DMIL's. I did buy a 6 quart Nesco last spring, but have only ussed it a couple of times, as I forget I have it!

Glad you had a grill and everything turned out all right.

For years, it was major holiday, major appliance. They all seemed to go when they were most needed, and most used.

I have the Cuisinart Convection/Toaster/Broiler Oven, love it. I've done some chicken in it, lots to clean up but it was fine.

I'll chime in on the Nesco roaster. My 6 quart gets used for everything from roasted chicken to vegetable soup. The big one is for hams, turkeys, simmering large quantities of stock, reducing apple butter, etc. They use less energy than my gas oven and when it's hot, I can put it outside on the deck.

Love, love, love my Nesco. Elery liked my 6 quart so well he went and bought one for his house!

I didn't mention that the meat was "done" when the propane ran out did I? It was.

Thank you all I will look into the Nesco. I have never used one but it sounds like it may be more versatile.

Have to find them first.

We have a convection microwave which so far I've mainly used to reheat foods, but according to the instruction booklet and other owners, will do a pretty good job of roasting, broiling and baking. It's the same size as a regular MW, so doesn't take up a lot of space. We installed ours above the wall oven, and with the trim it looks like it's part of a double oven.

I wanted it for times when the oven would be busy, like T'giving or other big holiday meals. It did a good job of heating sweet potatoes, artichoke dip and other side dishes over TG.

I cooked our Christmas turkey in the hooded gas grill outside, but that was because it was 41C/106F on Christmas Day here! Usually the grill lives on the bigger deck which faces east, but DH and DD decided it would be better on the shaded verandah on the opposite side of the house. We've designed our new(ish) extension to have a large room with a deck on one side and a verandah on the other, and French doors opening onto both, so they opened up the doors and wheeled the grill through! The turkey and roasted vegetables came out well and the house didn't heat up. Win-win. :-)

You are to be commended for adapting to the situation! I probably would have gathered everyone up to go to a restaurant.

I love my Breville Smart oven and the Nesco roaster.

I bought a Breville Smart Oven a few years ago, thanks to mustangs, and love -love -love it. If it fits in the Breville - that's where it gets cooked! It is used every single day. We took it to DS's house to use as a second oven for a Christmas Dinner.
I have an expensive Dacor Oven, and use the Breville instead.

I also commend you for adapting to the situation.
