If I had the money I know several dogs that I have been mommy to that I would clone. But, no one need worry. I have not the finances for such a thing. I loved my dogs so much, and it still hurts til this day to think about their being gone, so yeah I would do it. Is is morally wrong? I dunno.

Even if you could physically clone a beloved pet, there's still a good chance the personality would be totally different. The pet, for example, would not even recognize you. Not the same. When I lose a pet, I generally wait a while for the pain to pass, then get another. Not a replacement, but because I'm a good pet owner who loves animals and gives them the care and love they deserve. And I do take "rescues" and older pets who are house-broken.

Babka, I thought if you deleted your image off of Photobucket, the image would no longer appear here in Gardenweb. Perhaps you were viewing the page from cache on your hard drive instead of actually downloading the page from the web. Delete your temporary internet files and see if you can still see the pictures in the GW posts. Gesila

Wow, I did not realize how skittish she is...my dog was afraid of toys when he came to live with me as well. I remember the first time I threw a tennis ball towards him, hit him square between the eyes...poor baby, still has no idea of what to do with a ball, and forget a play ball like a soccer ball - total fear. In these cases the only thing you have to worry about is comforting your dog too much, if you do it at the wrong time, you inadvertently reward the skittish behavior...so good luck with that. Hopefully she will learn from the other dogs that she is safe and how to play. I would love to hear her progress notes. With regard to what cynthia states - this is a recipe for a dog fight. Even though humans should eat first and establish themselves as an alpha in the home, dogs will fight over a position within themselves, and if a human has had a dog for a couple of years and a new dog is added to the mix, if the human starts feeding that second dog first, or showing affection towards the second dog first it will start issues depending on the dogs. I knjow because I have seen it myself. While my friends ate first and the dogs fed afterwards, their new dog repeatedly tried to unseat the first male dog in their home. That dog was almost killed. So even though humans can interject themselves into an alpha role, if not careful with each new dog, while determining temprament it is important to keep the pack in the same order as always. I have also seen friends with dogs, get boyfriends with dogs and have problems with the order of things involving their dogs. It is something to be mindful of.

How cute! Welcome to the site. I rescued a boston one time and named him Mr.Beans he didn't like children and he eventually went to live with a young man that was mildly retarded. The dog did wonders for him and he took such wonderful care of him. A friend of mine in the neighborhood would check in on him and keep me updated, it ended up being a good scenario. We thought about the pet pictures at the petstore, but we have a rottie and two shih tzus- santa might have a come apart. I'll post pics tomorrow after we make them at home.

I don't know if the following would work, Cancook Flooring would know. Seems like the required sanding would be minimal if removed. Years ago(12 or so), I installed a perimeter glued sheet vinyl product. The adhesive was applied in a 4" wide band around the outside edges. A band 12" wide of adhesive was centered under where edges were butted together in the field. In 24 hours, the sheets shrunk and were quite tight. The only problem the home owner found(and the manufacturer and I told her about it) was the vinyl bunched if heavy furniture was dragged on the flooring. I did apply a layer of luaun over the subfloor(not hardwood) and filled the seams(product instructions said small gaps would not telegraph---I did not trust that!). The result was quite nice looking(after the adhesive had fully cured(3-4 days).

When we lost our precious Yorkie (Bandit) last year, we contacted the same breeder and were able to get a puppy who is in Bandit's bloodline on both sides. This one's temperament is totally different from Bandit. I think that would probably be the case with cloning also.

I agree--genetics are only part of anyone/any animal's make-up. You have to add nurture into the equation. I honestly think that cloning would turn out for most, to be a VERY expensive mistake, because they would never get a carbon copy of their beloved pet, so would always be doomed to disappointment. Think about the identical twins you know--even being raised in the same house, at the same time, they may have a lot of similarities, but they still have a lot of differences.

I would do it if it were made affordable. I can't even stand to think of the day I lose my baby (he's around 13, we're not sure).

I'm with Jannie.

I think it's sick. I have loved each and every one of my dogs for their individuality.
I have had one heart dog. He always be my heart dog. I don't love my others any less. Just different. Same as I love my children. There is always room in a heart for one more to love. What a shame to deny it.

I don't think this is a good thing at all.
There are far too many pets who are just waiting for good homes. All of mine have come from the Humane Society and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

There are too many people who dispose of their pets for the simplest, not true reasons. "Allergies" is a very common reason people are getting rid of their pets. These are posted almost daily on Freecyle and Kijiji. It just breaks my heart.

What gets the most attention is an animal that's been horribly hurt by a human in the most cruel way. Hundreds of people come forward to adopt these poor babies.

Just this week there were 2 kittens found in a dumpster with their right eye gouged out. And an adult cat was found a little bit later. All survived, and had surgery, and will now be up for adoption. You can bet there will be a number of people wanting them, to give them good homes.

No way, no how, NEVER.

Never in a million damn years.

Some may remember just how much Ruger meant to me. She was an amazing friend and incredible companion.

Our lives crossed at a point when we desperately needed each other. Had they not crossed, I firmly believe that both of us would be dead now.

I would have done anything had there been a cure for her cancer. I had 10 years with her. She's been gone 4 years now, and there isn't a day I don't think about her, or miss her dreadfully.

But to clone her I think would be the single most selfish thing I could ever do. Essentially it would be saying to her "Your time is done, so I'm going to replace you with a genetic copy of you. Maybe I'll get lucky and get something that looks like you and acts like you."

That's not valuing the individual's unique traits.

That's diminishing them.

And I can't think of any less suitable way to honor the memory of a treasured pet.

My personal belief is that cloning is morally wrong, that it has crossed the line. Like KFrame, and like most who have been blessed to share life with animals, there was one that stole my soul. To this day I miss him terribly, but still I know that cloning him would not really bring 'him' back to me, it would be a knock-off.

Never would I have my dogs cloned. It's sick, and it would never work. I like the uniqueness in pets, and I have it for sure. None of my seven pets are like any of the others.
