How to keep ziti warm for pot luck

We have a potluck party this evening and I'm planning on making baked ziti. But I found out the dinner will be served in courses. First the appetizers, then the meal and then desserts. I am already planning to take it out of the oven just before we leave. What is the best way to keep the baked ziti hot until the main dishes are served? I don't expect there to be a warming oven.

Karen,

Could you plug in a heating pad? Make a bed in box with the heating pad...
Or newspaper is a terrific insulator. Wrap the ziti in foil, then wrap well with several layers of newpaper.
I'm sure others will have great ideas.

I have used newspaper as an insulator for foods carried to pot lucks in cold weather. It works quite well. People used to line their shoes with it and put a layer under their coats during the depression, according to my mother. It would probably be best to put the ziti in a covered dish first if possible. I wouldn't be surprised but what the host will have a warming tray or chafing dishes for hot foods or will have the oven on low though.

Generally you just keep one seedling per plug. Pinch or snip the extras off at the soil. (If you pull them up by the roots, you risk dislodging the one you want to keep.) That said, I have sometimes grown 2-3 basil seedlings per pot, but my starter cups were quite a bit bigger than your little plugs (think 3" wide and deep). Good luck with your rosemary -- it takes FOREVER to germinate! :)

I usually prepare some appetizers and dessert. One of the recipies I do often is Onion Pakora. Try and let me know. I love pot lucks ..you can eat a variety of food and the best part is you need not prepare them all ;) lol! Ingredients: 2 tsp Ghee 1 pinch of Baking soda 1 cup of Bengal gram flour (besan) 1/2 cup of Rice flour 2 or 3 finely chopped onions (lengthwise) 2 Green chilies -- finely chopped 1 tsp Chili powder few cashew nuts/Ground nuts 1 cup of Cilantro (coriander) finely chopped 2 strands of Curry leaves Salt -- to taste Water -- as required Oil -- for deep-frying How to prepare: Place 2 tsp. ghee and baking soda in a mixing bowl. Rub together until frothy. Add the remaining ingredients and combine well, using sufficient water to make a thick batter. Leave it to rest for 15 mts. Heat oil in a heavy frying pan. Make small balls from the batter and drop them into the oil . Fry the pakoras until golden in color. When cooked, drain the excess oil on a sheet of brown paper or paper towels. Good luck asking her to keep them home...if it works, please come ask my neighbors to keep their dogs home- they poop in the yard, drag stuff out of its place in the barn, bit my dog and myself.... Anyway- there is a product that you put in the soil- I'm sure someone here will know the name- it is supposed to repel dogs and cats also, I think. I'd hate to use mothballs, as they stink to us and I do not know if mothballs really work. Can you temporarily put rocks/shells- something like that so the cat can't dig in the dirt to 'cover-up'? If it can't 'cover', it might not want to use it as a litterbox??? Spray the cat with a waterhose if you are able to...might make it think twice..

Without moving containers into a warmer place, protecting from a frost is harder than protecting plants in the ground. Why? Because the bed itself can freeze because of the cold air on the sides. But if your climate is anything like mine, the frost happens just in the early morning hours. Not all day. So you need to protect for a few hours, not for a few days, and for a large bed, only the edges of the bed will get seriously chilled. If you can get them in the garage for those few hours, the plants certainly won't miss any light. That being said, I'd just get a big tarp and gently throw it over the containers, anchoring and sealing it it on the ground around it. As noted, a light bulb underneath will add some heat to the air you've captured there. Just one incandescent will do it, but keep it from touching the plants. Let's not turn this into a major construction project. The plants may get compressed a bit, but they'll recover. I mildly disagree about the effect of wind. If the soil is moist and the air is dry, wind can cool it well below air temperature. You can easily get frost when the air temperature is above 32F. But the wind can also circulate air layers, preventing a layer of especially cold air.

Put the casserole in a styrofoam cooler...
Cover with foil if the dish doesn't have a lid, then put about an inch of newspaper on the bottom of the cooler and another inch over the top and tuck some more paper down the sides and it will keep hot for hours.
You can keep it even longer if you heat a brick or 2 at the same time you are cooking the casserole, wrap that in newspaper and put it in the cooler with the casserole.
I used to keep a couple of new bricks just for that purpose.

I have a pyrex baking dish that came with a thermal carrier and two pads - one to freeze if transporting cold dishes; the other pad is heated in the micro to keep hot foods hot. It works really well. We had to take a brunch casserole to a tailgate party and it was steaming hot when we served it at the stadium.
