How to keep ziti warm for pot luck

We have a potluck party this evening and I'm planning on making baked ziti. But I found out the dinner will be served in courses. First the appetizers, then the meal and then desserts. I am already planning to take it out of the oven just before we leave. What is the best way to keep the baked ziti hot until the main dishes are served? I don't expect there to be a warming oven.

Karen,

Could you plug in a heating pad? Make a bed in box with the heating pad...
Or newspaper is a terrific insulator. Wrap the ziti in foil, then wrap well with several layers of newpaper.
I'm sure others will have great ideas.

I have used newspaper as an insulator for foods carried to pot lucks in cold weather. It works quite well. People used to line their shoes with it and put a layer under their coats during the depression, according to my mother. It would probably be best to put the ziti in a covered dish first if possible. I wouldn't be surprised but what the host will have a warming tray or chafing dishes for hot foods or will have the oven on low though.

Containers can be incredibly hot depending upon sun exposure, container size, and how the container is sited (on risers versus sitting on a slab of blacktop). From what I recall, the color of a container doesn't offer as much of an advantage as I'd previously thought....a white container was only 5F degrees cooler than a black pot...if I'm remembering rightly. Do you know if all 10 of your orchids need Intermediate temperatures? If so, 65-70F should be fine. Other indoor variables are light, RH (relative humidity), and air movement. Do you know what each of your orchids needs and if their winter location provides these? If all of them grow in Phal conditions, you're good. As for temperatures, as Jane said, windows can leak cold air. Here in Minnesota, I cover the glass inside with 3M clear plastic film (no financial interest): # Indoor 5-Window Insulator Kit # Insulates five 3 x 5 ft. indoor windows # 62 in. x 210 in. clear film # 1/2 in. x 27.7 yd. tape # Performs like an extra storm window # Shrinks tight for clear-as-glass results # Reduces condensation & stops cold drafts # Helps reduce heating costs & save energy Online, the Mills Fleet Farm price, for example, is $12.79. Other brands may be less expensive. My orchids are in a bedroom. The 4' x 4' windows face E/SE, and putting film on them keeps the room warmer, keeps RH higher, and cuts down on the need for the little space heater. All winter, there's a fan going for air movement, and there's supplemental lighting from an LED and CFLs. For a couple of years, I didn't get around to putting film on, and the orchids didn't do as well the rest of the year. In S. Carolina, the insulation may not be as critical. Good luck asking her to keep them home...if it works, please come ask my neighbors to keep their dogs home- they poop in the yard, drag stuff out of its place in the barn, bit my dog and myself.... Anyway- there is a product that you put in the soil- I'm sure someone here will know the name- it is supposed to repel dogs and cats also, I think. I'd hate to use mothballs, as they stink to us and I do not know if mothballs really work. Can you temporarily put rocks/shells- something like that so the cat can't dig in the dirt to 'cover-up'? If it can't 'cover', it might not want to use it as a litterbox??? Spray the cat with a waterhose if you are able to...might make it think twice..

One of the cousins usually brings her pierogies to the family reunion each year. After they are fully prepared she puts them in a slow cooker but she makes sure that they are all coated with butter so that they don't stick. I too have one of the thermal units that Glenda is talking about, it is really great if that is enough time for you. Mine has a gel pad that you heat in the microwave then insert in a pouch inside the thermal carrier.

Put the casserole in a styrofoam cooler...
Cover with foil if the dish doesn't have a lid, then put about an inch of newspaper on the bottom of the cooler and another inch over the top and tuck some more paper down the sides and it will keep hot for hours.
You can keep it even longer if you heat a brick or 2 at the same time you are cooking the casserole, wrap that in newspaper and put it in the cooler with the casserole.
I used to keep a couple of new bricks just for that purpose.

I have a pyrex baking dish that came with a thermal carrier and two pads - one to freeze if transporting cold dishes; the other pad is heated in the micro to keep hot foods hot. It works really well. We had to take a brunch casserole to a tailgate party and it was steaming hot when we served it at the stadium.
