Refrigerator help! Liebherr for future or Samsung for now?

New to this forum, and read lots about the Liebherr 36". Actually purchased it last week when my old GE SxS died, but have not taken delivery as I'm in a state of quandry (not to mention had to rip out two cabintes and fix up the space to fit any new fridge). Since I *may* be renovating my kitchen in the near future, cannot decide if I should get something to tie me over until I know what will fit in the renovation - could be a Liebherr, could be a SZ, or GE monogram! - or keep the Liebherr and work that into the renovation. Is it really enough room for a family of 4 or will I need a back-up? I'm also concerned that the bins - which I love for being deep and long - will enable me to overload them and not find anything. How do you Liebherr owners organize your bins? I love the "deli" drawer concept in every other FD fridge, as they are flatter, and I imagine easier to store meat, cheese and snacks for the kids.

So, I am contemplating cancelling my order and buying the basic Samsung full-depth FD, which is still $1400. A lot for what may become a back-up fridge!

I have the double freezer free standing CD FD Liebherr. We absolutely adore it. However, there are only two of us. We use alot of fresh veggies and it keeps them fresh so much longer. We just did a Costco "fill up on meats" trip and it all fit into the freezers no problem. Then again, DH is eats the meat and not me! We fit in the package of 4 big steaks, the big package of I don't know how many pounds of boneless chicken cutlets, huge pork loin that I cut into chops... a loin... and pieces to use in a sauce (all individually wrapped and frozen), two whole chickens, ground beef, plus we have a couple of half gallons of ice cream, I keep some grains in there, four pounds of butter, and a couple of other things. Plenty for the two of us and the entertaining i LOVE to do. We just hooked up our separate beverage frig which we keep in our screen room. DH wants to get a secondary frig that we'll fire up when I cook for big parties and we need to keep large platters of food. For everyday use, it's perfect.

If you're worried about storage space, why not also get a cheapo "basement fridge" or "garage/mudroom fridge"--I mean super cheap, like a $500 white one with the freezer on top? A lot of people find a backup fridge very handy if they have kids or host large-ish dinners fairly often.

In other words, instead of seeking the perfect fridge--which doesn't exist--get one that's great, though imperfect, and another for backup/overflow.

makes me laugh since you point out how the thinking behind the question may be flawed. Allow me to broaden the question. I have seen web sites say that 7 or 8 cubic feet of fridge volume are plenty for a couple. This is the volume in a 24" fridge-freezer. Predicting life expectancy works best when you have a large fleet of the same things. Pooled results corresponds somewhat to the predicted results. Single devices vary a lot; there is much less correlation. So yes I agree there is something inane about thinking of a single device's future life span. Any fully integrated fridge has to get rid of condensation water by evaporating it and blowing it back into the room. (H20 condenses out of the fridge air after you let room air into it. An eternal cycle.) Is your house air dry? If so, your fridge is under less stress, permanently. This one little factor determines the mileage because X thousand days of working ten times as hard as another fridge will shorten its life expectancy. So putting a dehumidifier behind the fridge will be good for it and also good for your kitchen micro-climate if you like drier air. Fridges fight against humidity after they do the easier work of creating cold by moving heat across a few inches of space. Just for the intellectual exercise of comparing oranges to oranges, the Danish Vestfrost and the Turkish Blomberg / ArÃ§elik are I believe the closest comparisons, and these two firms named are real factory owner-operators. In Europe just as here you will find appliances made by a factory for another company that puts its name on it. So tongue in cheek, Liebherrs will last as long as any other Danish or Turkish fridge built with the same components. HTH -david

We are also a family of 2-senior citizens. When DH cooks it's almost always with fresh food. Up to now, we've always had Sears Kenmore refrigerators-never any problems and when we got rid of them, they were still working, even after 15+ years. Hoping the Samsung will be as reliable. Choice was Kenmore Elite or the Samsung. The only ones we found that were flush or less with our counters were the Sub Zero and the Liebherr but they are pricey if you want 36". The Sub Zero we were considering was B130U-F-R which was under 20 cu. ft. for $6997 without the sides and front (extra even for just stainless) but dimensions were 30" wide by 24" deep by 84" high. 36" wide would probably cost more. Believe Liebherr's dimensions for depth and height would be similar. The Samsung counter depth we got will be 36" wide and about 29" deep with the handles but a lot less money. DH does 90% of the cooking so he got to choose the appliances and even though he liked the pricey ones he went with the Samsung.

We have a ~$600 24" freestanding LG fridge (both width and depth - no handles sticking out which is great for a tight space) with bottom freezer. It's not fancy, but It's easy to clean, very quiet (perhaps due to lack of an ice-maker), and very spacious for the size - officially about 10 cu ft combined. So far, nothing freezes anywhere in the fridge (which is more than I can say for our once state of the art free-standing SxS GE fridge) and the LG preserves food as well as our main GE sxs fridge. The only complaint I have is that you have to be careful closing the freezer door or it doesn't stay closed. When the fridge arrived (online order delivered as freight), two non-critical pieceswere cracked. No problem dealing with LG. There was no parts list so it took a couple tries to get them to send the correct parts. However, they sent them promptly and now we have enough to open a parts supply store. The fridge came with a 2 year warranty. For this price, if it breaks after that, I would just buy a new one. The model has been updated since we bought it, but the changes appear to mostly cosmetic. The new model actually looks nicer.

As to other issues -- there is a lot written in online reviews that expresses distress over both Samsung and LG ice/water through the door dispensers... does anyone who has one of these new models want to weigh in on this? Have they fixed this problem in the newer models? Is it a true problem or a matter of initial installation? (They say that you need to flush 5 gallons of water out of the dispenser initially to get rid of air in the line and then you won't have a problem..... is this true?) Also, as to different refrigerator model designs -- they actually recommended online that the refrigerator design with the four quadrants and the vertical lineup of drawers and door bins in the freezer is easier for shorter people than the big cavernous bottom freezers. I am actually on the taller side (5'8"), and to be honest I do not like bending over at all LOL! But at least it might be easier to find things below in a freezer composed of door bins and drawers, versus one big bin even if it has two levels. What do people who have actively used these different types of refrigerators, think of the new refrigerators by LG and Samsung with the tiered organization versus the old French Door/Bottom Freezer design?

I recently received a sneak preview of the new KA 4 door refrigerator. The black one is a absolute knockout! They will come in SS and white as well. The pantry drawer opens to the deli drawer. It is a huge drawer! They say it is the largest on the market! On top of this it has a 10 year warranty! Should be able to order one from a dealer. Don't know when delivery starts.
It's not counter depth.

Thank you both for the replies. I'm not actually sure where this post ended up - but I will be moving it to the appliances page where it should be! That KA sounds interesting; I too think a cheapo back-up fridge will be necessary, particularly if I keep the Liebherr...
