FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - August 14, 2013 - The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) has voluntarily recalled specific lots of dry pet food because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. These lots were distributed in the United States and represent roughly one-tenth of one percent (0.1%) of annual production. No Salmonella-related illnesses have been reported to date in association with these product lots. Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products. Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers. Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian. This issue is limited to the specific dry pet food lot codes listed below. This affects roughly one-tenth of one percent (0.1%) of total annual production. The affected product was distributed to select retailers across the United States. These products were made during a 10 day window at a single manufacturing site. P&G�s routine testing determined that some products made during this timeframe have the potential for Salmonella contamination. As a precautionary measure, P&G is recalling the potentially impacted products made during this timeframe. No other dry dog food, dry cat food, dog or cat canned wet food, biscuits/treats or supplements are affected by this announcement. P&G is retrieving these products as a precautionary measure. Looks like conjunctivitis. Best course of action is a thorough ophthalmic exam, with Schirmer tear test to rule out KCS (dry eye) as a cause and fluroscein stain to rule out corneal ulcer as an effect. Most mild cases of conjunctivitis don't require meds, but he may feel better in general with an antihistamine or artificial tears if allergies are the cause, which is most likely given the red skin. OTOH, Boxers are generally too busy to be bothered by mild allergies! They are both beautiful dogs. I just sort-of adopted a Boxer too. Gracie was supposed to be euthanized, but I couldn't do it. She has heartworms but should be OK in a couple of months. I'm going to treat her after she gains some weight (she's wretchedly skinny at 42.5#) and then adopt her out. She's a sweetheart!

I have a 13 year old chihuahua mix that has had the same problem. I give her 50 mg of vitamin c each morning and it takes care of it. There is no rda for vitamin c in dogs. They supposedly produce it in their liver; maybe some dogs don't produce enough. The only caution I'd give - a little is enough - so don't give too much or more than is reasonable (Don't mega dose).

Since you've already seen all the necessary doctors (which I, too, was going to recommend) I will say that I use Systane Ultra and find it helps the best (tried others) particularly for burning. When my dry eyes flare up, I become very sensitive to light and my eyes burn. If it's really bad at night, use the gel but it's only recommended as you are getting ready for bed because it will blur your vision. If I get up during the night (which is pretty much daily) I have difficulty opening my eyes. The Opthamologist said the eyeball is literally sticking to the eyelid and do not try to force the eyes open because you can tear the retina. I massage the eyelids with my fingertips for a couple of seconds which spreads whatever moisture around and the eyes open easily.
