One of the motion activated water jets might work. I saw them in the Gardeners supply catalog to scare off wildlife. There are screamer mats to keep kitties off of restricted places in the Doctors Foster & Smith Catalog and also Cat repellant spray for the plants and porch area. An empty soda can with some pennies in it is a good thing to shake when you see them hanging out where you don't want them. Sorry to say but it seems that a cat will always expand its territory to the limit when no other cat is there to defend it. Then they mark the new spaces to keep other cats from encroaching. I love kitties and have found that if you can sprinkle them with the hose when they are trying to claim your space as theirs they will reconsider and it does them no harm.

My sister-in-law bought a house with hardwood floors that had had a serious "cat problem." They had the floors sanded and refinished and the smell is gone. It isn't cheap, but it is a lot cheaper than replacing the floors. I've had limited success with a spot treating product called Nature's Miracle. I've used it on carpet and it definitely reduces the odor better than other things, but doesn't totally remove it. I've never tried it on wood. As for finding pee spots, a fluorescent blacklight in a dark room will make old urine stains glow yellowish white. You used to be able to get blacklights at places like Spencer's Gifts, but I think some online pet stores have them now for exactly this purpose. Works especially well on carpet (although it's creepy to see all the old stains), but it may work on your wood too. You may be surprised how many there are.

We had brand new carpet installed several years ago. Within a month, my cat got sick and urinated on the carpet. We thought we'd have to rip it all up and replace it, it was that bad. When I took the cat to the vet, I asked about the carpet. She gave me a can of spray, I think it was called The Equalizer or something similar. Used a black light to find the spots that needed spraying. I sprayed them and it completely removed the smell. I've never seen this product in stores, but I am sure a vet would have something that will take care of it. I am sorry your kitty too, they are members of the family and seeing them sick is heartbreaking. I lost one to cancer in Aug and I still miss her terribly.

Baking soda and vinegar cancel each other out, but not hydrogen peroxide (although the reaction might weaken it). One site suggested a vinegar and water mix, followed with baking soda, but that didn't work for me. I've read Nature's Miracle changed their formula and doesnt work as well as before. There are other "enzyme" products - I tried a pet store version which didn't work. A new one called Anti-icky poo is really expensive. Guess I'll try the hydrogen/baking soda version, and will buy a black light to see if the cat urine stain is still there (and elsewhere). And I PROMISE to post back my results.....just like the person below did, lol. Vanessa Buddle So yes this original post was along long time ago,but I’m at my wits end with my baby boy peeing all over my brand new house and brand new couch. I’ve been using straight vinegar on the spots straight after he’s pee’d there,it’s not helping at all and after I close the house up,even just for 5 mins,it absolutely reaks from him marking his territory. I can’t get angry with him as it’s a natural act that he is doing,but it’s at the point where I can’t eat in my house or have people over. This smell has to be gone before summer otherwise it’s going to be unbearable. I know that getting him desexed may not solve this issue and that’s my worry as he’s a rag doll and I breed them.(in saying that,he only started marking the place after that last litter.the litter was mainly boys and I think he felt intimidated)anyway,please wish me luck and I will definitely let you know the results after trying this recipe.Tia September 5, 2018
