cat urine on wool carpet- how to best clean
Comments (1)I don't know what to use, but my carpet cleaners I used for our rental said they could not get out cat urine, they wouldn't even try. They can get out dog urine. Good luck....See Morecat peeing on floors
Comments (9)I've had the same problem with my 8 year old cat..she will go in her box and then for no apparent reason she will pee on the floor next to her box..I have 2 cats and the litter box is the kind that has a top cover..I went out and bought a 2nd box with no cover and put fresh litter in it and showed it to her. She was fine, went in her new box for several months and then started doing it again. I can't explain why some cats do this but I do know that I have to keep the box very clean with fresh litter in it for her. I also went out and bought "puppy training pads" and taped them all around her box so she would pee on those rather than the carpet if she decided to get in one of her moods. That way you can just pull the soiled pad up and replace it with a fresh one..but be sure to tape them down since a cat will scratch the area and the pads will end up in a big heap if you don't. A good way to clean cat urine from carpet is to first buy a hand held steam cleaner and steam clean the area as well as you can sucking up as much of the urine as you can possibly get..then make a mixture of Hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and one squirt of dish soap..any dishsoap works and I usually fill a plastic cup with the hydrogen peroxide, dump several tablespoons of the baking soda in,squirt the dish soap and then mix it very well...pour the mixture over the affected area being sure to get it all and pat it into the padding under the carpet..you pretty much want to soak the area..let it dry for a few days and then vacuum it up well..if you can still smell the urine when you put your nose to the carpet then repeat the entire process including steam cleaning it again..then pouring the mixture on and letting it dry...it does take some work but it's worth it(I'd rather spend some time cleaning the area well than having my house smell like cat pee yuck)!!!..once you've used this mixture you literally cannot smell the urine in the carpet even if you put your nose to it. A small steam cleaner is a must if you have a cat that's doing this., You can even use the mixture on tile grout and since I moved and my litter box is now on wood floor,I've had to pour it on a small area of the wood once or twice..it discolored the area slightly but I just used some wood stain after I treated it...hope this helps! I feel your frustration! A good tip to cut down on the "litter box smell" in your house is to use the crystals instead of scoop litter..I started using it a few years ago and would NEVER go back to scoop litter again! It costs a little more but lasts much longer than scoop litter and has absolutely no cat urine smell even after a few weeks..I still use a scoop to clean the droppings out every day but as far as the urine goes..all you have to do is give the litter a good stir every few days with your scooper..It should last about 1 month if you have 1 or 2 cats..depends on how much they go outside....See MoreGetting Cat Urine out of Carpet
Comments (19)Hi! Still hunting the web for answers? Hard core emergency with large areas? Unfortunately, enzyme cleaners cannot completely remove the bacteria/protein combination which creates this potent bouquet. Nor will vinegar, but it breaks the protein bonds really well. Baking powder will neutralize odors on the air or surface, but cannot kill the odor-causing bacteria. Please, beg of you! do not use lemon juice on … well, really anything but wood/lemon oil treatments in your home, and no applying oil anything over protein stains! Walk by the clove oil antibacterial cleaners this time! And no, pure ammonia will not cause a pet to re-mark the area. I read that on several sites and was discouraged indeed! The proteins in the urine are what triggers the re-mark habit. Please mask and ventilate area with fan first! For big areas, try the following 3 part solution: 1 part water to I part: Pure ammonia or at least 70 percent isopropyl rubbing alcohol or Tgel .5% minimum coal tar ( best on hard wood, and must be poured boiling) -for tgel or sulfur cleaners, a half cup to very hot water in standard bucket size. Add a capful of laundry detergent for bigger container (bucket) solutions, or a tablespoon of dishwashing liquid. Smaller or less than gallon solutions, a teaspoon. Let sit minimum two hours, then wash off with detergent. Best to dry again to test odor. The dying bacteria will release all kinds of noxious fumes, so the detergent step is necessary. Or apply solution again. Repeat. This may take several attempts. For the utterly committed, there is a final step, but if you used ammonia — by far the most powerful non-bleach antibacterial — I do not advise this, or only if all else fails. Yep, bleach, but it can never, ever be used directly on an unwashed urine stain. Detergent washing will remove the ammonia used, or in a fresh pet potty stain. But ammonia mixed with bleach creates hazardous, even lethal chemical gases, so wash and blow dry the stain at least three times BEFORE bleach! Required! Same solution as above, on bleachable fabrics only. Best method is a thick powdered bleach paste, mixed with hot water. I have worked rehab jobs with clients who wish to save hardwood flooring. And rescue home purchases the same. If a pet has repeatedly used the floor, I am afraid there is only one solution to this problem, today’s science permitting — they must be sanitized with ammonia. Ammonia will permanently stain unvarnished or partly varnished wood flooring. Wash then bleach method may be too dangerous, as wood may be saturated with pet ammonia. After that, a distressed paint look may be applied. I love this look, clean and country fresh! The other option is darkest varnish. A happy home is filled with life and live, especially pet love. And real love means real workbooks! If you arrived here, your heart truly fills a home with the greatest of furball love! Wishing a a happy and clean home to you all!...See MoreFirst project complete: refinished floors
Comments (23)Thanks for all the kind words! We were thrilled to discover the HW floors in a closet and learn they were throughout all the original parts of the house. The dark stain does indeed look good-I'm just a slave to the dog hair that accumulates with lightening speed. Chispa-yes! We ended up in La Crescenta. Terrific schools and a short commute for my husband to Glendale. Win-win. :) I wish we could live on the west side, but my husband would be unable to remain sane making that daily commute....See Morekwie2011
