Rutgers and Jetstar are both large indeterminate plants (Rutgers has a determinate form but the indeterminate is more common) and easily reach 6' or more in height depending on growing conditions provided. They will both need at least 10 gallon pots as already mentioned or planted in the ground. It is possible to cut two plants apart with a sharp knife by just slicing straight down through the root mass. But depending on how much the roots are tangles together it will be better to just sacrifice one plant for the good of the other. You still have time to buy more plants if you want to grow more than one. For future reference the smallest size container recommended for growing tomatoes is a 5 gallon bucket and then only for dwarf or container varieties. Dave

Yes, get all of the old soil off the roots. It may be difficult, looks like it is peat that is hydrophobic. It gets as hard as a brick. Pick it with a bamboo skewer or chopstick, shake off whatever you can. You may have to soak it in a warm water, hydrophobic peat is very difficult to re-wet. Once you get the soil off, see what condition the roots are. Some will break off with soil, some may be totally dry & dead. Cut all damaged off. Let it sit on some kitchen towels to soak off any extra moisture (Iif any, after washing). You need to get potting mix that doesn't have so much peat in it. Simple & easy is to get some Cacti&Succulent soil, and a bag of perlite. Mix these 2 in 50/50 ratio. You could use pumice instead if available. Pot the plant in this mix, if you had to cut some roots off do not water for a day or 2 to let cuts to callus/heal. Do not overpot. Maybe use a terracotta pot that is bit heavier if you worry about plant tipping. You may have to secure plant until the roots establish themselves - using few big rocks around stem may be enough. After couple of days, move it into best light you have. What is your general location or growing zone? Let plant recuperate for a while. After, I would do some serious pruning...

Sounds like a few possibilities- if daughter/grandkids moved in recently there must be no father on a continual basis. The boy may not understand that your house is no longer 'his' home. Grandma already raised her kids- it is not her responsibility. Is the mother an alcoholic? Drugs? Physically or mentally abused and does not have the capacity herself to guide her children. You may not know these answers yet but dig. Ask grandma over or out for a hamburger. Discuss your worries with her and she may shed some light on the situation. Or not... It is not the child's fault, as much as it puts stress on you. Be proactive- lock your garage door. Lock your home doors. Ask a legal person if YOU may put a lock on the gate. Look at your County Clerk office tax assessment/file to see who legally put up the fence- you may be surprised to find out it is really your fence. Talk to your insurance company- they will have suggestions about how you can cover yourself. Most of these things are private and the neighbor's will not know of you trying to figure out the situation. Sometimes it DOES take a village to raise a child- especially a mentally affected child. I am blessed- I too have a connecting yard because two sisters and their husbands lived side by side. Then they were widows. I was able to know/visit the sister that previously owned my house for a year, before her death a few months ago at 100 years old... Her sister is my neighbor at 90, who is a wonderful woman. Don't dispair- there is a reason you are there. Figure out why as exhausting as it is right now. Chin up!
