where to mount curtain tie back to take advantage of the sunlight

I have 3 rod pocket thermal curtains (JCP Mystique faux silk) across my 2nd floor hallway french door and sidelights to an unused balcany. The curtains will only be hung for the winter to reduce the cold drafts. Sunny days I want to open the curtains and bought the rope tassel tie backs. Where should I hang the hooks? Most places says 1/3 from the bottom but I want the most sunlight for the free heat. I want to install the hooks much higher to get a more open expanse. Just pushing the curtains to the side doesn't give me as much of an opening. How high can I go? This hallway/door is seen by the bedroom occupants and of course none of them but me care. The hallway/windows are 82" wide.
