low water level in toilet tank

Hi,

I will start by saying I know nothing about plumbing but I told my better half that I would see if I could find out anything for him to work with on this forum.

We recently purchased a Pegasus Tulip dual flush toilet at Home Depot. Looks beautiful and works pretty good but the water level in the tank never goes to the max. With less water in the tank, it seems there is less water when flushing. Is there any way to fix this problem?

I have not personally looked at one of those. The key idea would seem to me to be whether it works properly. Your post "pretty good" seems to indicate that nothing needs correcting.

Normally there is a "fill" mark in the tank. The water should fill pretty much up to that point. I would think that the factory, in their designing, calculated that the toilet flushes best when water is at that fill line. If it fills to that point and things work okay, then you are as good as you're going to get:-)

Sounds like a foreign object is stuck in the trapway. Maybe a toy, feminine product, disposable razor part, Q-tips, etc.? Three ways to deal with it: 1) wait and maybe it will clear itself. 2) You might get lucky by trying to clear it with a closet auger (careful not to scratch the bowl, so have it retracted when you insert it so the rubber elbow is the only thing that touches the bowl. 3) pull the toilet up and see if something is stuck at the base of the toilet - no fun.

It sounds as though the valve is leaking at the seal between the upper and lower components. I'd buy and install a whole new one.

Welcome to the world of water conserving 1.6 GPM flush toilets. What you describe is your dissapointment in the water surface (Wet drop zone). Without much water in the bowl or a pressure assisted flush it can be difficult to keep clean. Unless it has always been a problem where the bowl is evacuated, usually due to venting issues. You can check this by holding float down and letting the fill tube fill the bowl slowly which will settle at your seal hieght. Today when buying a new toilet, one must shop the water surface area besides, looks, rough-in, color, handle style, base, trap, and many other items.

There is probably a float mechanism that shuts off the water-fill. Associated with it, there will be a means to adjust the level it floats up to before it activates the shut-off. Find the adjusting mechanism and change the float level. Probably a screw-device although some have click-stops. If it's a float attached to a lever-arm, sometimes the adjustment mechanism's range isn't enough to accommodate and the lever-arm itself needs to be bent a little to get it back in range.

The max is probably at the fill line. I guess you can fill it above that point, but it won't help you flush any better. It's supposedly designed to flush best at the fill line. If the tank empties with a flapper, only so much water will go into the bowl before the flapper drops regardless of how much water is in the tank. Of course if you stand there and hold the handle down, you can empty the tank. You aren't supposed to have to do this. And if you try to fill the tank much higher than the fill line, it will just run down the overflow pipe and into the bowl...just wasting water . (The overflow pipe is the pipe that is at a verticle attitude in the tank).
How high do you want to fill this thing:-) Are you having problems?

Thanks everyone - the max I refer to is the fill line in the tank. The water doesn't seem to go to that line. It looks like the overflow pipe is set low so the water goes as high as that. Coolvt is right - if the water level went higher it would just go down that pipe. Is there a longer pipe that could replace it? Maybe my maintenance guy didn't put it together right? When I said "pretty good" I meant that most of the time it flushes everything down, but not always.

I doubt that the maintenance guy put it together wrong. The inners of a toilet come assembled. All he had to do was join the tank and the bowl together. I doubt a longer overflow pipe would help you. No matter how much water is in the tank, the flapper will only let a predetermined amount out before it drops and shuts off the supply.
There were some posts a few weeks back that dealt with the same problem. Maybe you can read them and narrow down whether your problem is "not enough water" or "something plugged up".
If you find that it seems to be plugged up I can tell you that I have seen new toilets installed where the wax ring under the bowl were not centered correctly and they were blocking the flush, but that's a long shot.
I really think you have to narrow it down to the above two listed problems....low water or plugged. Then you can figure out how to solve.

Thanks! I'll check other posts but you might have something with the wax ring. I'll check it out.
