Who buys this stuff???

Ok, we all know that Wms Sonoma isn't the cheapest store at the mall, but every time the holidays roll around I'm just floored at the prices of the food they sell. I can't imagine buying it even if money were no object. Here are just a few examples; can you imagine paying...

$83/lb for rack of lamb ($41.66 per serving)

$1.66 apiece for pigs in a blanket

$2.18 apiece for 1" diameter mini crab cakes

$1.87 apiece for Parker House dinner rolls

$14.97 for a one-pound brioche

More to you if you can afford it and I'm sure it's all good stuff, but seriously???

FOAS, I agree. I'm continually surprised to see a $15 banana bread mix there, or marshmallows that cost $3 each. I guess people must buy them, because they're still in business but man-oh-man, it's not in my budget!

And if you're making a 15.00 loaf of banana bread - you probably want to spread it with 9.00/lb butter!

I go to Good Will stores where I often run into local business women and yeah.....doctor's wives. It's called voluntary bottom feeding, and many people who are concerned with environmental issues shop there. Re-use, recycle, repair. I do not shop the box stores, it's also a moral choice because I want my dollars to stay local. As for medicaid recipients buying high end merchandise at Good Will.....what explains the salon nails and hair, 4G phones and tatooes? I don't suppose that was supplied by either GW or the 1%. I think this is starting to float to policital again, so I'll not comment further other than to say, with the economy and trade in general in such a state of flux, I'm assuming that what is/is not poverty and how much and where intervention is needed is going to be the subject of much discussion for some time to come. Some positive direction may come of this. It's not the first time we've faced similar difficulties and it won't be the last. It's cyclical and always has been, and sooner or later enough interprise and insipiration floats to the top and things adjust. It's just not easy in the interim.

Sammy--where do you live? They're starting to mention snow for here in WI, too. I don't usually inform a seller unless they specifically ask. I usually just either buy or not and let it go, especially at garage sales. As you all may remember, my thing is antique sewing machines, especially those made by the National Sewing Machine Company. There are very few rare models of Nationals (or any other maker for that matter) and usually I find them over-priced rather than under! Dealers are usually more willing to entertain a lower offer after I've spent a bit of time discussing what sewing machine values are based on from a collector's point of view. I try to be honest--I love to get a bargain, but I'm willing to pay a fair price for a machine that's going to go into my collection. Annie

"Just wait until you have to pack up all that crap and move it." My SIL just bought a retirement home so they are decluttering their current house as a preparation for selling it--she keeps telling me she can't believe how much STUFF she's got to get rid of. When I go to their house I always admire how it looks nicely organized and without extraneous things all over. However, I also admire her tons of closets and storage space which she says leads to keeping, you guessed it, all that stuff LOL. I've decided I will play a mental game this summer and pretend we have to move; maybe that will be my motivation to get rid of much unnecessary and unused stuff in our house! I use the holidays and shopping for gifts to satisfy any yen I may have to be a retail hunter/gatherer. The past few years I increasingly feel as if I am gorging myself after staying on a careful and healthy diet; by the time January comes I feel so psychically bloated from all the shopping /buying that I need another year to rest up and recover! It's interesting to me to watch my young adult daughter who is setting up her first home. She loveslovesloves Home Goods, Marshalls, Pier 1 etc. And when I go with her I usually find stuff I could easily buy. I have a rule that I can't take anything from those places home the day I see it. That usually short circuits the purchase, I'm rarely motivated enough to fight the traffic and crowds to go back a second time!

Friends had sent me a Giant Caramel Apple with Nuts from WS a few years ago. Best thing I've ever put in my mouth. Sure not going to spend 25.00 on one apple + S&H on myself though.

Yea it's all good... but there is no way I am buying that stuff at those prices. One of my friends does, she doesn't cook AT ALL and has disposable income for days.

There are plenty of people out there who don't cook and have the disposable income to buy those things.

I would rather cook it myself, usually I can even make it better.

Of the half-a-dozen wealthy couples I know, only 2 truly enjoy cooking. The others enjoy good food, but neither spouse really likes to cook.

We're not wealthy, and I enjoy cooking...but not every day, every meal. I could buy upscale ready-to-cook stuff from WS, but I prefer to go out to restaurants; it's my hobby.

But I can see some people I know going the WS route, if they could afford it. They like to entertain, but aren't really big on the whole DIY meal. They'll use catering for larger parties, but the smaller quantities of WS would work fine if they were just having 4-6 people over. Not everyone's got a gourmet grocery store within a 10-min. drive, and having stuff delivered Fedex could be a whole lot easier and quicker.

The point is....it's not even very good. Well maybe the rack of lamb....but I'll bet refrigerated dough in a can is better than mail order rolls.

Another thing that amazes me is who buys those cheezy cheese boxes you see stacked in the malls.... not refrigerated so you know the meats are filled with preservatives and the cheese is "cheese food".....and a 2 1/2 pound box costs $40! You could buy 2 pounds of imported Parmegianno reggiano for less.....and you'd really have something!
And then there's that place in Vermont who sells stollen and butter cookies....my mail!...They have a warehouse stacked full just waiting for your order!

How about fully cooked bacon in 2 oz. packages at $30.00 or so per pound?

It appears to be selling well in my local supermarket.

The very wealthy people I know cook....it's the school teachers who don't...LOL! Funny because I know 3 school teacher families who don't cook a lick....and mega millionairs who fix dinner!
The people who buy the Hermes bag and the full length black glama minks and the 6 Karet diamonds sure don't waste their money on Williams Sonoma prepared foods! They have better taste than that. It's the people who don't cook who have to take a cake to something and they want to be sure it's good.

I saw today at the store where I was buying $.88 for 5 pounds supermarket brand flour....for $1.58...little blister packs of about 1/2 tsp each assorted herbs and spices. One was labeled herbed pork....and had what looked like chili powder and rosemary....maybe garlic ad maybe black pepper.....and another was for oven roasted potatoes and had about a tsp of dry onions, something green, some paprika and a 4th thing? They were put out my McCormack
Now! Really!...that's as bad as the cryovac "microwave ready" potatoes!

Who buys this stuff???
