Very cold in Pa, have hot water but no heat?
Comments (14)tigerdunes: Here's why. My 41 y/o husband had a heart attack on 7/11/10. Long story short, he ended up losing his job on 10/29/10. I've been the sole provider for 2 months leading into the holidays and cold months. I'm just trying to hold onto my home, let alone be able to afford a contractor or repairman. We have 8 kids ranging from 6 - 23 and have always used alternative heating when they are here (i.e. kerosene heaters on both ends of the first floor and oil filled electric radiators in the bedrooms) to keep the house warm, to spare our oil. (Trust me, the kids aren't ever cold). We would only turn the heat on in bursts as needed. Being hubby is on blood thinners, he gets super cold, so bad it's painful. And this last time when we decided to turn it on, BAM, nothing happened. So yes, we've suffered like that bundled up like eskimos seeing our breath because we are broke. Reaching out on an internet forum was an act of desperation. And not that I expected help on NY Eve and a weekend, but I got help and I'm grateful to those who gave it. I didn't expect to wake up today to criticism. I hope you took the time to critique everyone who asked for any kind of help yesterday and didn't just pick on me. You did help - You helped me feel horrible. "IMO". Happy New Year....See MoreCold Water Line Heats up in Hot Attic
Comments (12)Thanks for everyone's great input. To answer a couple of questions, the hot water loop is separate from the cold water lines. It is insulated the entire way from one end of the house to the other. There is an electric pump next to the water heater that moves the hot water through the pipes, delivering hot water quickly to most any faucet. The hot water in the cold water pipe is due to the hot attic. The weather has cooled significantly here in SoCal and I can tell the difference. Today was about 70 degrees, and the "cold" water comes out room temp instead of hot when we have the 100 degree days. I know the problem. I was just wondering if there was an easy solution. Inslutating the cold pipe? Or the other one that makes sense - removing the insulation below the pipes, and tenting it over the pipes so maybe the air conditioned rooms below will keep the space with the pipes a bit cooler than when they are fully exposed. Or, just live with it. Maybe an under-sink chiller hooked up to the small filtered water faucet is in order....See MoreCold/hot water dispenser or just water in fridge?
Comments (14)In our remodel, we will have external ice and water and a hot water dispenser in the prep sink. Right now we use the Brita and a hot water pot (plugged in 24/7) which keeps water boiling hot but sits on the counter and takes up lots of space. My kids and DH love cold water and miss the dispenser (which is currently broken on my kitchenaid) That was one of their musts for the new kitchen. I LOVE hot water and can't live without it for tea and hot water, hot chocolate. I would rather pull a lever rather than microwave or boil water. SO, for our remodel, my rationale was since i'm getting cold filtered water in the fridge- I would save and get the hot water dispenser in the sink. If the water dispenser in the fridge is that slow..i'll put the Brita in my new and bigger fridge. For me it wasn't a hard decision- it seems overkill to have 2 filtered cold water dispensers. Now I have to look into the energy consumption you are talking about because I am trying to be energy conscience and efficient with this new remodel....See MoreSingle handle faucet: "Cold water is overriding the hot water"????
Comments (21)OK, different story after I actually met with the maintenance guy and performed some tests. Here are the facts: 1. Single-level handle for tub/shower with pressure-balanced valve. 2. Tenant does not experience water temperature fluctuations, but supposedly tenants in unit below complain. 3. No water heater in unit, but circulating hot water in building (big boiler). 4. It takes a long time before water actually turns hot when the hot is turned on, both on bathroom sink and tub/shower. Not sure if that's related. 5. So here are the tests: a. Turn hot water on at tub/shower until it's piping hot; turn off; turn HOT on again --- water comes out very cold. b. More interestingly: Turn tab/shower faucet on hot; turn off; then Turn hot water on bathroom SINK faucet --- this is a two handle faucet, so only use hot water handle; water comes out hot, then slowly turns cold; then hot again. c. Now shut off tub/shower valves, so no water gets into the faucet. Do the same thing with the sink faucet as before, i.. e turn on hot; now water will not turn colder but stay hot. So, my question is now: Did the previous plumber incorrectly install the faucet after he took it apart when he fixed a leak, or is the pressure-balancing valve in the tub/shower faucet busted? Either way, I just called a plumber....See Morejulie94062
