picture of bathroom. Here you can see where the shelf is. We were hoping to move the tub over by that much. Now need new design idea to give us room for our arms etc.

The coloring is definitely off on my computer. I have samples and have seen it in the show room.

Are you talking about making a niche? Lots of tub/shower combos have them. I used them in my DIY renovation of my daughter's bathroom, link below. Mine were placed based on the ridiculous framing in that wall... I'd have made the one on the long wall a lot larger if I'd had the room :)

No photos, but we did 2-12"x12" niches in our shower stall to hold shampoos, body washes etc. Works great. Is that what you are talking about. There should be lots of examples out there. Try googling - photos of niches in bathrooms - and you'll find some different types. We tiled ours in a different tile than the rest of the shower stall.

Stacey - that is what I am talking about but ours would be on the large wall and be very large. More of an architectual element to give us more elbow room and then use the bottom of it as a shelf.
Like this wall niche - but in the shower. Large in scale to give us room not just storage. Our tile guy said we can do any size 6" deep.

I think a very large niche...with arched top like your wall niche picture or not...could look great along that wall. BUT...only if you do something to make it stand out. I'm thinking of something like a mosaic or different tile motif similar to what folks do behind the range in the kitchen. If it is simply tiled in white subways like the rest of the shower, I fear it will also look, as you say your current shelf does, like an afterthought. But if you put some other tile in there, it could look WOW!

Don't know what the rest of your bathroom plans are, so I hesitate to suggesst something specific. But perhaps picking up the tone and texture of the tumbled travertine on the floor? At the very least, I would suggest tiling the shelf of the niche in the floor tile. I'll see if I can find some pics too.

There is a current thread on the bathroom forum that has exactly what you are talking about. It is the thread titled, "Extend the tub deck..." About the third post down, first picture. Hope that helps.
