Kitchen ceiling medallion - paint colors

Hi,

I put this medallion up in my kitchen. I wanted to antique it. Can anyone give me instructions on how to do this?

What do you think of paint wall colors?

By antiquing do you mean you want to glaze the medallion with glaze/burnt umber or glaze/raw sienna. Or, because of your base color (which will require some adjustments) are you going for more of a copper verde or aged copper look? I ask only because some people do not know the difference. You will probably get more detailed info on the home forums craft & hobbies site. There are endless techniques and supplies you can use. You may even consider some wax rub 'n buff products, they are a delight to work with and come in a wide choice of metalics.

You are right. I do now know about the process at all. Our decorator just give us a quick skinny and said oh, yeah, you know, just paint it on, wet the rag down, or dry rag and wipe it! This was the result, but I don't think it's what she meant. Ihaven't been able to find any sites with the process on it.

Do you know of any?

how about thinking outside the box? two problems are too little light and what you do have is your lights have a blue cast to them. so when you put yellow on the walls it probably winds up having a greenish cast to it. also contrary to belief, painting a dark room with very light color will only make it feel gray. so what to do? be bold. How about pairing a more peachy yellow like bm glowing apricot 165. then try a color like old glory 811 in a semigloss or high gloss for the cabinets. use atrium white for trim. if you can replace countertops I'd find a white that matches the trim cabinet. nothing with gray in it. how about a glass tile backsplash that picks up the peachy yellow and whites?

The boxes are fairly standard but often the fixture itself is the problem (not the wiring in the ceiling but the cap on the actual fixture that touches the ceiling). I'd guess that was the problem. Options, different medallions with a pattern you can cut to fit your larger capped fixtures in. Change out the fixture's top caps (same finish, stollen from a diff fixture, which is a very easy switch) or more expensive medallions (ie custom). I guess one other option, and frankly I've never seen one before I moved into this house is a connector from the ceiling cap on the light fixture to the medallion center basically it's the middle man on lighting and causes your lighting to hang much lower so tough in newer homes without tall ceilings. You can barely see it in this pic...if you look at the fixture you see a ring then the ceiling cap, hanging down about a foot or a foot and a half down from the medallion...that piece is not part of the light fixture, it's brass and the ceiling medallion is plaster. I have no idea what it is though but you could show a dealer and they'd know. They may come in different sizes????? Good luck!

Traditionally these were plaster and for most of the time they were popular originally, they were painted to match the ceiling or picked out in a trim color of other mouldings. The crevices in the design masked soot from the lighting and it was also easier to touch up as a separate element rather than repaint the ceiling. Only in the High Victorian period and later did these seem to get the polychrome treatment, to my knowledge. It really is part of the ceiling, not part of the fixture.

I absolutely loved using ceiling medallions throughout my house. I used a lot of vintage electrical fixtures (chandeliers as well as sconces), and I thought these were just very appropriate. I also like them because they break up what would otherwise just be a bunch of plain space. :) All of mine are painted to match the ceiling color. In general, I used a guideline of making sure the medallion was approximately the diameter of the fixture. The only place this didn't work was with the ceiling fans in my bedroom and office -- I couldn't get one big enough shipped here anywhere close to my budget. But then, you don't have that problem on the mainland...... This is a long hallway with two hanging fixtures: My entrance foyer: When I took this photo, I hadn't yet re-dressed the chandy. It looks much much nicer now. :) And I put on with the chandy in my master bath: HTH! Summer

Sorry I don't know of any web sites, but HD or Lowes has info and some supplies for faux finishes like you have, and they also have some pre-mixed glazes for antiquing. There are other ways to get a "look" but the big box stores may have what you want. I am sorry I cannot offer more help because I'm still not sure of the type of finish you are after. Do you have a style in mind for your future remodel? If you don't have a vision you may want to paint your medallion a cream or lighter shade of ceiling for now until you decide.
