So on March 8 you posted about getting a tooth pulled? Can I ask for specifics? Which tooth? Were you put out or get shots to numb it? Much pain afterwards? How is it now 6 days later?

I hope it's o.k. to ask, if you don't want to answer that's o.k. After 2 wks of battling an abcessed tooth, my face literally swollen at least 5 times the size, unbelieveable pain, and a round of penicillin the dentist gave me my options today....Extract the tooth or have a root canal and a crown. I've had a root canal before, that doesn't worry me. It's the cost, $100 - $200 for extraction, $1,800 for root canal and crown. Ugh, big difference.

I am not Susan but I will tell you about my experience.
I had a root canal and somehow, the tooth got fractured. Dentist said that happens sometimes.
It was extremely painful and he said the only thing to be done was to pull the tooth, which cost me even more.
If the tooth doesn't show when you smile and you don't want to spend the money, go for the extraction.
I was so relieved to get rid of the constant pain of the fractured tooth, the pain from the extraction was tolerable.
I think I only took one Rx pain pill and then ibuprofen worked.
Just remember if you get the extraction, don't smoke, don't drink from straws and follow the instructions from the dentist to prevent a dry socket.

Thanks for your advice Carol. I've pretty much made up my mind for extraction. It's starting to get little zings and aches again already and I just finished the antibiotic Sunday morning.

My daughter got dry socket from using a straw with a milk shake after having her wisdom teeth out when she was 15. Man how she suffered.

In March I had the anchor tooth for a bridge weaken so much it had to be pulled and prepped, along with the empty area the bridge covered, for implants. An oral surgeon came to the dentist's office to do the procedure. I was prepped for surgery. Everyone had gowns and masks and I was surrounded by a fairly sterile environment. Betadine was swabbed on my face. The tooth was pulled and the two implant sockets were drilled into my bone and packed with bone grafting material and stitched up. I was given a temp bridge to cover the two tooth gap to wear for the next six months while the implant takes. My regular dentist quoted me $6,600 for just one implant and didn't even add on a possible root canal, crown lengthening or gum grafting that might be needed. I started to shop around and two other dentist recommended that the weak anchor tooth be extracted and an implant done there as well. A dentist that has been in my area for over 25 years got my business after quoting me about $5,500 for the extraction, bone grafts, temp bridge, and two implants. Jodi-

Tooth I just had removed I don't know if it was "dead" or not but he had to cut that molar in 3 sections & struggled to get them out. It had rotted under a crown yet it was still the most difficult he had done in a long time. he told his new assistant fresh graduated from dental school that he normally would send case like mine to a specialist but since I an a very long time patient he did it. The pieces looked like triangles, still trying to figure that out. Sounds like you have a good dentist Konrad, but on molar might be wise to have the crown put on because if tooth gets weak might not be able to crown it then & that means puling it & bridge or hole in mouth. You are only 62 so you want to be able to chew & enjoy food for many more years. My dead tooth was an "eye" tooth.

BTW, when I needed an extraction before an implant, I had the periodontist do it. They do extractions all day, every day, and they are better equipped to notice and react to a possible emergency. When I was in fifth grade, my friend, who had some serious health problems, died in the dentist's chair. One day she was in class and the next day she wasn't. Joan was the first person, besides my grandfather, that I knew who died. And while I realize, gratefully, that I don't have her health situation, I still take this stuff seriously. Attitude toward teeth is also partly cultural. Where I'm from, teeth are preserved (or if necessary, replaced) at all costs, even if the work has to be paid off slowly. Other places I've traveled, no one seems to think anything is odd about missing teeth, even if they are in the front. (Although did you see the Tiger King follow-up? That guy with all the missing teeth had them replaced. The difference was startling!)

that sounds ridiculously high to me. a few months ago, one of my great danes developed a tooth root abscess, at 13 years old. olivia has been on heart meds for 4 years and sees a cardiologist every 6 months. the cardio vet insisted i take her to a board certified vet dentist so off we went to st. louis. he evaluated olivia, spoke at length to the cardiologist and proceeded. not only one tooth needed to go but he found another that was broken and removed it, too. i had not planned on spending the night but he decided that given her heart issues and the fact i lived 2.5 hours away, he wanted her to spend the night in the adjoining e.r. to be monitored overnight. i stayed in a nearby motel. i figured i'd have to go back to work to afford all of this but was rather pleasantly surprised at the final bill. including the initial exam, a complete geriatric blood panel, the procedure (with all of the accompanying precautions), a 3 hour recovery, and because i didn't bring her heart meds with me, it was necessary for the vet to scramble to get a couple of Rx filled so she wouldn't miss a dose, then the overnight stay, my cost came to $1,700. i was beyond pleased!

Katlan, it went very smoothly, had one Valium an hour before, and was pretty loopy, so didn't care what he pulled! No problems at all, no pain after. Now my pinched nerve is another story, still driving me crazy! Thanks for asking!!

Thanks for responding Bigack. Glad to hear you had such a good experience. I don't want to jinx myself, but I can't imagine it can hurt as bad as my face hurt a week ago. Man I hope not!
