That Stupid 'Scooter Store' Commercial! LOL

Does it drive anybody else crazy!!? There's this poor old woman, going around and around and around in one small circle just grinnin' her butt off!! That's exactly how I would be in one of those things! LOL

I agree that commerial is awful. Why do they have to portray older people like they have lost their minds ??

I don't know and the thing that gets me is there are about two other people standing their watching her and acting as though she's just winning blue ribbons for operating that scooter! LOL

Well, lpinkmountain, there's always next year. The benefit of this recipe is the strawberries stay almost entirely whole, so it has a lovely appearance and texture. The downside is the traditional gel temperature doesn't apply, so you have to use the cold plate test to determine degree of set. The original recipe was done outside, so it's basically a naturally dehydrated jam, but we don't have the sunshine here (especially this year) and with the oven you don't have to worry about insects. I think the balsamic vinegar could easily be reduced. I'd be inclined to add near the end tablespoon by tablespoon and see how I like it. You could do a balsamic-peppercorn, which makes a lovely "boutique" preserve for gifts. I'm thinking that might be the base for some wonderful glazes and for a killer strawberry-peppercorn-mustard condiment. Also, lpinkmountain, I've used this same recipe for other berries, particularly raspberries, which are so delicate they tend to lose all identity. This results in a beautiful, bright, "textured" preserve, so is perfect for raspberries. Blueberries with a cinnamon stick and maybe some whole allspice could also be made in the same way. So play with it, see what you come up with and let us know how you like the results. As far as traditional strawberry jam (the "holy grail", LOL), I've never had a set failure. However, due to the growing conditions here in the PNW, the berries have a different sugar-acid balance that makes a good set easier to achieve. Remember, too, that with traditional no-commercial-pectin jams it's a good idea to use 1/4 underripe fruit. That boosts the natural pectin level. Carol

I think the real long-term issue for artists is that now, in the information age, people are becoming accustomed to not paying for things at all. I was, in my first couple of years selling handmade artworks on eBay, constantly asked, why I'd make, sell, and ship original art pieces (gouache, acrylic, pastel, etc) often well below the cost of the materials. Everyone seemed to suspect I was lying, or cheating customers somehow. The real answer was, nobody was buying those pieces if I priced them above a dollar because a lot of people these days in the digital era seem to be irrationally conditioned to expect everything for free or nearly free. Problem is, nothing is really going to be free. Everything has a cost to it, and in these cases I pretty much absorbed the cost of the items I was losing money on, by doing other tedious jobs like transcription tasks for around $5/hr. The cost was my time, and all my genuinely creative projects moving forward at a snail's pace. The cost was that a lot of the things I've tried to work on, that people want me to finish, aren't getting finished any time soon. If every customer is this stingy, and everyone pirates everything, or wants everything available for free, it'll kill the software industry, games industry, movies, music, books, etc - or clutter them all with lots of ads like television. Sort of a 'prisoner's dilemma' situation, on a much larger scale. I saw this coming years ago and made a determination that I would never pirate anything. I'd be one of the ones who paid for digital products. I'm weird that way. There were some artworks back then that I made to order for customers, and sold for as little as a penny. And there were some listings priced at a penny that *still* wouldn't sell. Right now, now that I have 120 ratings on eBay, all positive, people are beginning to get that I'm actually doing this, that it isn't a joke or a trick. That's good, because now I'm actually able to sell some large art pieces at prices where I actually turn a profit on them. Not a big profit, mind you, it's more like $2-$3/hr, but at least I'm not losing money on all of my items. (Though, in between all my fixed price stuff, there are still listings with 99-cent opening bids.) An example of an ad I posted in a few places: My eBay shop The other thread discussing my work. A big thank you, BTW, to everyone who did buy from me, whether the amount they spent was a penny or a dollar or anything else, as those early ratings on eBay were key to establishing a track record there. It's really helped. I am excited about the future and how things are going now. I'm optimistic that soon I'll be able to ramp up development of indie games and videos and do some really fun stuff. oh my you found me on a real bad day for things that bug me lol. first off being late, that drives me up a tree..i can see a few minutes or even an hour every once in awhile..but consistantly every darned day..up to 4 hours!!! lord love a duck, drives me batty! i also cannot stand it if everything isnt lined up (ocd) i guess. people in the store who park their cart in the middle of the aisle, leave it there then go to a different aisle, kids screaming and throwing tantrums in the store, my parents wouldve tanned my hide but good in front of EVERYONE, (probably a good reason why we were never spanked, when my parents talked you listened!) also at my moms house there will be 2 sqares of tp left on the roll..nope bring in a new roll and set it on the side of the tub!!! now why the heck when your sitting there remove the old one and stick in the new one? how hard is that??? drives me buggy..if i didnt do it no one else will. another people who walk in my house and leave the door wide open..what is up with that? people who do not wipe their feet..im going to start going with take your shoes off policy again nobody likes it then dont come in...grrrrr if the chickens poop in them thats your problem lol. dirty dishes being left everywhere. candy or gum wrappers everywhere when the waste paper basket is right here next to the table!gum or food particles in my ashtray yuk , yes i know smoking is bad but that is just terrible, people who do not flush the toilet that just grosses me out. ok thats just a few i could go on and on and on....boy you got me thinking and i got to vent a little at the same time..lmao thanks i feel better now..whos next?????

I think there are a few rose-colored glasses being donned here. I remember the '60s. Back then, you could figure on replacing a washer and dryer about every five years. (One exception was old Maytags, which ran forever. But they were very pricey, and I recall my mom saying that friends of hers who had them hated them because they didn't clean very well.) It seemed like my dad worked on ours constantly. Besides the frequent breakdowns, there was regular maintenance: the agitator spindle had to be lubricated every three months or so. Once a year the washer and dryer motors had to be oiled. And the dryer needed a new belt about once a year. Oh, and washers didn't have self-cleaning filters then. There was a oblong-shaped screen thing that had to be pulled out of a nook in the tub and cleaned after every load, or else the next load wouldn't get clean. The timer would go out in about three years. Same for the dryer element. And when you finally bought a new set, you didn't sell the old washer and dryer; you took them to the dump because they were completely used up. You could figure on the TV breaking down about once a year. I recall making many trips to Sears with my dad and a bag full of tubes, to use the tube tester. If that didn't get it, time to call the repairman. You could figure on a TV lasting about seven years before the CRT or something else expensive failed, and then it was time for a new one. In the kitchen, the stove needed a new element somewhere about once every two years. That more or less coincided with the schedule on which the fridge broke down. Diswashers weren't a problem because nobody had one. Microwave ovens were unheard of. When a car got to be about four years old, it was worn out. My dad kept a '61 Buick for nine years and I remember his friends teasing him about that old car. Every few thousand miles it ate a starter solenoid. Dad always kept one in the trunk. He got to where he could change one in about 15 minutes. Even a new car needed a quart of oil every fourth or fifth trip to the gas station. Tires were good for maybe 20,000 miles. Shocks for not much more.

The Head ON commercials irk me. They always have and unless they change drastically they always will. Also I prefer the older Geiko commercials to the ones that have aired the past couple of years.

Although it is a commercial for a good cause....walk for breast cancer. One sentence the gal speaking says, just strikes me wrong. She says I never got to have the choice of wether I wanted to lose my mom or not. I think to myself, what would your choice have been? Yes, the Head on and the other "on" commercials bug me too. dottie

We have this lawyer that asks, this week, if you have had a heart attack after using some drug, and he is here to help you GET YOUR MONEY! A couple of weeks ago it was if you have breast cancer after taking whatever drug, but he will GET YOUR MONEY. I'm sure he will, but for himself.

I haven't seen any commercials that annoy me lately. The Old Spice Hair and Body Wash one cracks me up.

I can't stand the gay Levi's commercial that has been airing during Project Runway. Its the one wear the guy is pulling on his pants and all of a sudden a phone booth pops through the floor with a good looking guy in it and then they walk off together. There's a heterosexual version of it too that I don't care for either. Then there is another Levi's commercial with a couple ripping off several sets of clothes. Don't like it either, too suggestive. Needless to say I won't be buying any Levi's products. My 10 year old DD and I love to watch Project Runway together but I question whether I should let her watch with these awful commercials.

Latest JC Penney commercial introducing the American Living Collection.

Several seconds in, in what appears to be a birthday celebration, we see a shot of a young girl standing on a table just as she plants her red rubber booted foot smack dab down in the center of a cake. Everyone around her cheers and claps.

Maybe I'm missing something and this really is a more common scene from American life than I'm aware of but my first thought when I saw it was "you step on a cake I baked and you will not see your next birthday!".

Jk, but seriously, the commercial irks me.

(I do however love the music used in the commercial - the beautiful John Prine song "Killing the Blues" sung by Robert Plant & Alison Krauss.)

There is another commercial that is a spoof of that Head On commercial. It is advertising shoes and the people on the commercial just keep rubbing a shoe on their foreheads just like the Head On. It's pretty funny!

My most hated commercial of all time is the nasty toenail fungus one where the cartoon fungi lift up a toenail and climb underneath. It makes me sick!

Victoria Secret's commercial during the Holidays the YOUNG girl, scantily clad looked to be about 12 or 14. I heard their CEO has cracked down on them over the suggestive practically nude commercials. Bravo!
Get really tired of listing to Billy Mays bark about several products.

Oh, I had to hunt this thread down ... I just saw one of the Campbell's Tomato Soup commercial with the dorky guy who guzzles soup from the can and ends up with a soup-moustache. It makes me cringe!!!
