Washing Soda (Sodium Carbonate) for Drains

Joeray

I read several years ago that washing soda or sodium carbonate flushed down the kitchen drain periodically would keep the grease from building up in the pipes. I had been doing this for several years when I read that washing soda could damage PVC drain pipes, so I quit this practice. Does anybody have any input on this or know of another way of keeping grease build up from happening in drain lines. I don't like to use the strongly corrosive drain cleaning products like Drano.
