Can I use a 30-year-old rough-in for tub/shower temp. control?

Is there anyway to replace the existing American Standard temp. control without destroying the tile in the tub enclosure? I know that things have come a long way, and that the current plumbing in the walls is a vast improvement over the old stuff, but the tile is EVERYWHERE and is in mint condition. The old temp. control had a large rectangular backing plate, but it has a relatively small round hole behind. The other side of that wall is wallpapered in the hall, so going in through the back (if that even would be possible), would not be a pretty option either.

I called American Standard and gave them the name of the old model. They laughed.

Not a good sign...
