Hi all,

For those of you in the Chicago area, I am fostering a Siamese/brown tabby mix named Magoo who needs a loving forever home. He's an absolute sweetheart of a cat, outgoing and friendly without being aggressive at all. He loves cats and people and is even very good with babies!

Instead of a typical cat meow, Magoo chirps and squeaks. When you pick him up he's gentle and sweet and never bites or scratches. He's very healthy, neutered, micro-chipped, de-wormed, up-to-date on vaccines, and has tested negative for feline viruses.

Magoo came to me because one of my sister's "friends" dumped him. (She asked my sister to watch him for a few days, then called a couple weeks later and asked my sister to take him to a shelter.)

He is a bit cross-eyed but it doesn't affect his agility. He gets along very well with my cats and his litterbox habits are impeccable. He is between 1-2 years of age.

He seems to be a wonderful cat. Good luck finding a home for him. (Maybe he already has one?? LOL!)

Since those long-ago days, our neighborhood has changed so much. The children have grown up and left to start their own families. Now their children go to school with kids of all races. As the former neighbors left, many of their homes were bought by people from Mexico and Central America. I know that there's so much controversy about illegal immigration, and perhaps some of our new neighbors are illegal, but all I know is that they are the best neighbors that we ever had. Many of them have fled the violence and grinding poverty in their homeland and appreciate their new lives. The elderly homes are getting facelifts. The roofers have been very busy and the sounds of sawing and hammering are heard coming from inside houses as we walk past them. There is homemade landscaping and flowers abound all summer. Loved stautettes and expensive urns are sometimes left out on front porches and are not stolen, as they might have been in the past. The parents are striving to learn English. The children are becoming assimilated in their schools and Americanization is slowly breaking out all over the place. The families are careful about their children; they've seen what gangs are capable of doing and keep the children as close to home as possible. These people are thoughtful about others. When we had five yards of mulch delivered to the foot of our driveway last summer and it needed to be moved to the back yard, suddenly wheelbarrows and shovels appeared and offers of help came from all around us. If we are winter slug-abeds, when it has snowed overnight, we find that our neighors have shoveled for us. Of course, all personalities and past experiences are represented in any population and we are not immune to the problems of urban life. Some folks play their music too loud. Some have a party to celebrate anything. Some honk their horns at six in the morning. Some bring their rural lack of skills to try to "do-it-yourself", oops! that old tree you are taking down, just brought down a telephone wire. The city seems to want to "write off" neighborhoods where an underclass lives, but who is the underclass. The family behind us, the man teaches in the city college system, the wife was an architect in Mexico, their son is attending our most esteemed state university and is studying international finance. The twins, (whose parents came from Jordon) down the block grew up become a mathematian and a nuclear physicist, their sister a pharmacist. The nurse across the street is getting her PhD, can we call her Dr. Nurse? The teenaged children next door are in gifted classes. Alex has started his own business and is thriving. Our country still has much to overcome. Among many things, we need more and better education, and to learn to respect each other. But our new neighbors see the America, with all its faults and opportunitities, that our ancestors did when they immigrated here.

You would hope so, mzstitch, but this is a chronic situation, complained about for years, across the country. It's also identical to what I have observed from lower priced, mass producers of nursery stock here in this area for the past thirty-plus years. When stock is produced at a price point, to be sold in mass at a cheap price, care in identification is one of the first things to go. I've posted about this a number of times, in many other threads before. There have been questions about whether a rose picked up at a big box store really was Fragrant Cloud or not, as it had no scent. Usually, they're not as Fragrant Cloud isn't as easily produced as Gypsy is and Gypsy doesn't smell compared to Fragrant Cloud. These producers are under tremendous pressure to pump out a reliable product. Those roses which pose production issues are frequently replaced with similar varieties which are easier to produce. For a nursery such as Week's, for a rose to be "commercial", it must result in a minimum of 60% Grade 1 plants using whatever the preferred method of production is. This was stated by Tom Carruth who used to be the breeder for Week's. For a mass producer of lower priced stock, this percentage must be higher as they don't have the "luxury" of selling their best plants for higher prices to mail order customers or higher end nurseries. Their product is available to mass merchants, in bulk, at mass quantity discounts. It must be something easily produced in quantity, easily pushed in to bud and bloom in whatever size container required for the price by the retailer, and provided at as low a cost as possible to keep the retail price "cheap". In those "selections", you often find Paradise substituted for Sterling Silver; Gypsy instead of Fragrant Cloud; a number of red HTs all labeled Mr. Lincoln; Queen Elizabeth as QE and several other pink HTs; an so forth. Whatever is easiest and cheapest to grow to the price point is labeled as the more commercial name. Care in identification is often non existent. Yes, you can find some identified correctly, but as this (and many other) thread demonstrates, mis identification is common and there is usually no one available to educate you any differently. Kim

Well, I wandered around my local discount drug/department store and got creative (this was the same store where I found self watering windowboxes). I took pictures, but I haven't finished the roll (Gasp, yes, I'm NOT digital yet!). When they're ready I'll scan and post. I ended up with a little plastic basket, and a piece of snap in gutter screen and foam pipe insulation. I had to shorten the basket, and cut off the top. I also drilled some more holes in the bottom and side (get a drill bit that will work on plastic) to maximize the dirt to water ratio. I I had to trim the gutter screen a little, but it's thin plastic. Shears and a hacksaw did fine. I put the basket in the middle and cut a hole in the screen so that the screen hung over the basket a little. The dirt goes down into the basket. I cut two corners off the screen, and stuck a piece of pipe insulation in each corner. I cut the bottom at an angle so the water would flow out easily into the reservoir part. I propped up the other corners with a short piece of pipe. I tried watering it the other day, and soon had water coming up the sides of my box! I should probably drill a couple of over flow holes just above the gutter screen line. I planted wildflower seedlings and threw in a bunch more seed. I figure I'll thin them later. This box is my 'will wildflowers create a windbreak on my balcony?' experiment. For the Deck box (plastic, bigger than a windowbox), I did not do a bottom screen. I'll use the gutter screen next year. I had not done enough studying yet when I did this one. I used BIG chunks of styrofoam torn up and jumbled with lots of air spaces inbetween. Again I put the angle cut pipe in two corners. I covered the top with a black garbage bag. This contains bush beans, and I think I've had to water it once in 2 months? It is still inside, in front of my 8' patio door. I've had beans! The neighbors couldn't believe it. MY WORD, those things are tasty! I've just planted new seeds inbetween the current plants. These plants are pretty leggy from being indoors, and once the new ones come up I'll probably pull these out, and maybe keep rotating like that all summer. I plan to move it out to the balcony in a week or two, and I hope they'll be sturdier when grown outside. I know beans like some heat, so I may need to wait til mid-June at this rate! I don't know how safe the pipe insulation is, but I didn't see anything else to use (looked all around HD too) without getting into buying a big, expensive, roll of something. If anyone has any suggestions on what to use for tubing, let me know. Maybe some medical supply item? I heard PVC pipe isn't very safe either, and I wasn't sure I had the tools to trim it. I don't have much storage. I need all my pots and supplies to stack within each other and hide under my balcony table/chair set in the winter. That all gets covered with multiple vinyl chair covers, and strapped down with bungee cords so it doesn't all blow away in the gale force winter winds. Anyway, it was fun to wander around the store and think creatively! Tyrus urban, where did you find Earthboxes for $27? I have a different brand which I think was $30ish on sale at QVC. I put my tomatoes in there a week ago, and of course the temp dropped immediately. It's too heavy to pull inside, so I've had a white poly fabric shower curtain clamped aroung my home made trellis system ever since. Light goes in, rain rolls off. I check them every day and they are surviving. I plan on planting the garden this weekend, but I'll be rigging some cover around the tomatoes and cukes. I may just put a paper leaf bag over the cages at night. If the leaves end up laying against plastic they get frosted. I think I'll put down some black trash bags for a day or two to try to heat up the soil some more.

Interesting thought, fly! I spent a good deal of time on the website linked below - but this woman isn't a pet psychic, I get the feeling she's more of a hand-holder. I wonder if she would give any better advice than what I've received from you all here? (I'm doubtful. Still, I'm somewhat intrigued!) In all honesty, I don't know if I could fully put my trust in a psychic. I guess my biggest issue would be that I'd worry I was simply handing over $ to someone who was taking advantage ... I don't know. I really know nothing about such things. I've just returned from yet another neighborhood scouting mission, and just about gave my stupid self frostbite in the process. DH is certain that Molly is not going to venture out any, if at all, in this cold. But I do see numerous cat prints in the snow, and somebody is coming back repeatedly to eat from the dish on the front porch. Boy, If I had thought of trying to adopt out my fosters through the forums, and thought it was allowed and safe, I might have tried to do so a long time ago, and wouldn't be at 7 cats now. (Not counting the neighbors' stray cats that I feed).

Find a reputable rescue group and get your cat on their waiting list. It may take months, but a good rescue group will screen potential adopters to make sure your cat gets a good, loving home. There are all kinds of crazies that will take a cat for who knows what reasons. I had one of my fosters at an adoption event, when a family wanted to adopt one of the kittens right then and there, without having to wait. With kittens, the adopter has to wait till the kitten is big enough to be neutered or spayed, so that the organization doesn't have to depend on a mere promise it will be done. The kitten is basically taken off the list, and put "on hold" for the adopter until it's fixed. Anyway, the more the people were questioned, the more suspicious the counselors became of the motives of the people. It turned out that their child was visiting a friend or relative, and while the child was away, it's kitten was run over and killed by a car. These people were trying to find a kitten that looked just like the one that was killed by a car so that their child would never know it's pet had been killed. Obviously, they were turned down. It's this organization's rule that adopted cats be kept indoors. I don't know how they enforce the rule, but knowing that these people let their kitten out ruled them out. That fact that they were resorting to try to fool their child was, well, foolish, and also ruled them out.

Another adopter walked up to my foster without even interacting with her, pointed at her, and declared he wanted that one. He also declared he was going to declaw her. The counselors said but wait a minute, don't you want to go in the play room and play with the cat first? No, he didn't. They told him they don't allow declawing, but that they had previously declawed cats in their system that needed homes, would he be interested in one of them? No. He wanted that one. My foster, Annie, is a short haired black cat. Not many people want black cats, but when someone acts like he did, you get suspicsious. What are his motives? Is he part of a cult that uses black cats for their riturals? Maybe he just liked her instantly, but still, he wanted to declaw her. He was turned down.

Sorry for being so long winded, but I just want to point out that it's good to have an organization's help in adopting out a cat. It's just amazing what people will do to cats, so you can't be too careful.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! A few people have contacted me and one sounds very promising--knock on wood. She lost a cat to old age earlier this year, leaving both her and his companion cat bereft. Hopefully it will work out because I am not ready to be a seven-cat home!

Sally, I totally hear you on the issue of checking out potential adopters. It's why I've refrained from ever posting a foster on Craigslist. I've been lucky thus far in that everyone who has adopted a cat from me has been the friend of a friend.

I'll keep you all posted. Magoo spent his first year of life at the Paws Atlanta shelter, so I want to make sure that whoever adopts him really does give him a forever home.

Paws in Chicago is not affiliated with any other Paws shelter. It was started 10 years ago by a Chicago resident.

I was making a wisecrack because of how you are not supposed to give away animals that are in need of a home for free or advertise them in places where too many evil scientists may congregate. Because of the threat of someone wanting to use them for experiments, meat etc.

I think I would have a different approach. There are so many cats in need of a home that you can't advertise that too much. The price thing may help keep some of the evil scientists at bay but it also gets people comparison shopping. (Remember you are trying to find a home for the cat.)

If I was adopting out animals, A questionaire that tested the basic pet care knowledge of a potential adoptor and personal references and a brief waiting period (like with guns) to prevent impulse or gift adoption are some things I would more than likely use instead of fretting over advertising in certain places or setting a minimum price.

Okay, QQ, I understand your point, and it's well taken. Although in most cases, that price covers the cost of medical care, such as vaccinations, neutering and spaying, deworming, etc. It's an expense the potential adopter of a "free" kitten/cat would have to come up with anyway, and the adoption fee is usually lower than those services would be for an individual.
