My3Dogs, ANOTHER curtain ????

I apologize in advance for the call out, but I couldn't find a way to email you.

I want to make "your" curtains for my den, but I have an odd problem.

My rods (heavy wooden poles on the standard wooden bracket) are mounted quite a bit above the window, and are fairly deep, causing the curtain to be away from the wall about 5".

Inside the window casing are mounted wooden blinds.

In the past we have had a problem with wall/top of window/light around top of blinds showing...and being very unattractive!

I am using two heavier linen fabrics by Waverly for the front and back of the curtains. Do you think when they are drawn up, that they will puff out enough on the sides to cover this problem, or do I need to invent some sort of return to go over that open spot and tack to the inside of the rod bracket? I also apologize for not being able to show a picture, I do not have a digi camera...it is on my dear Santa list. If you need more description, please feel free to email me, and I will attempt to do better.

I understand exactly what you're saying! They will puff out some, but with the depth of your bracket being similar to this on in my DR, probably not enough.

You might try some double stick foam tape to pull the sides back and tape it to the window frame. No one would see it, and it's just a matter of testing it to see if you like the look, and can 'finger fluff' them enough so the sides don't look too 'pulled' back. You may have a problem with that right up at the top near the bracket...

How many windows do you have? If you were able to buy new brackets that didn't have that extension depth, it might be better...

You are way too smart....I didn't even know what I was saying and you hit it square on the head. I thought about different brackets, but DH would have to make them and he isn't too interested :^(
BUT since overall he is a good guy, I think I will do as you suggested and invent a return and tape it down! Thank you so much for your help!
Hope your weather will warm up soon....I would trade you 75 degrees for about two feet of snow!!

Yes, I do think it would be fine for valances. In fact, I have used another Kaufmann print called 'Ottomani' with elephants on it for valances in my bedroom that is the same scale. I typically use 1 to 1 1/4 yards for each valance. The 54" width is perfect for your windows. You will need to order extra for matching the repeat from window to window, as well as for your pillows. If you look on Fabric Guru at the picture of the fabric with the ruler on it, you'll see that the pheasant print alternates with another of two different birds. You don't know where their 'cut' will start, so since it's so reasonable there, I'd personally order a minimum of 5 yards, since you need 3.75 for your valances, and you'll need extra for that to match prints, and then extra for your pillows. Sitting here looking at the fabric 'in person', and your stripe choices, to my eye, your first stripe fabric is the one I would use, given those choices.

Hi, artlover! I love texture, and have beadboard and trim above in both my bathrooms. I have shutters in one below the valance, as they were here when I bought the house. They were pine and I painted them the off white of the trim. In the half bath, I have a bamboo roman-type shade/blind. I love it, but if you really need privacy, know that you can see right through the bamboo at night when lights are on. You really can't see into my baths, so it doesn't matter to me, but depending on what is on the other side of that window, if you go with bamboo, you may want to get a lined one.

Hi, Bru, Could you please post pictures of both windows? The windows in my house that have shutters, dining room and upstairs bath, have them either half-way up (DR) or 3/4 of the way up (bath). In each case, the shutter tops align with the muntins in the windows. The windows in my house are '6 over 1' (6 panes on the top over one on the bottom). I'm not a shutter expert, but I would also want each sized window in proportion with each other. This is an awful picture of one of my DR windows. If this helps at all, the over all window length, from top to bottom of trim is 64". The height of the shutter is 20", and the shutter comes up to the mid-point of the glass. The WT hangs down 22" in the center, not including the tassels. I hung the rod 2" out to the side from the upper window trim and 2" above it. I didn't use any formula to determine how far down I wanted the valance to hang, but mine generally hang down to the center of the glass in the upper window. You can barely see the horizontal muntin in the picture, but note how the bottom of the valance is pretty much in line with it, excluding the tssels. If your windows have muntins, that may be your clue as to what size shutters you want and how far down to let the valance center hang.

This is where you need to play around until you get the look you want." Shee, I could be wrong, but I don't think you need to make a new valance out of the same material. Just keep adjusting until you get it to fall right. Adding your fringe will also help a lot, so baste the fringe on before you adjust again so you don't get it perfect and have to take it down and start over. Your latest adjustments just need a bit more tweaking. Maybe it's easier to see from a photo than head-on, so if that's the case just keep checking your pix until you get the look you're after.

Are there finials on your poles and are they removable? If so, and if the poles aren't too much wider than the window side casing, you could wrap the return around the ends and also stick it to the sides as my3dogs suggests. Look at her picture above and imagine the finials gone. Maybe a little cardboard molding to give the fabric some body.

I'm just about to get my curtains made and hung. My3dog, can you tell me exactly how high and how wide I should hang mine? I don't want to experiment and make more holes in the wall then are necessary. Thanks

Actually what I do is remove the finials and wrap the fabric around to the side to make a return. You then poke a hole where the finial needs to be screwed back in (presuming you have the kind of finial which screws in as most do) and you can put the finial back. It looks just fine!
