Prep sink - faucet height and disposal?

I will have a prep sink on an island in our remodel. At first I was thinking of having a lower height faucet (but still a pulldown) but they are few. I found a bar faucet I liked but wonder if it's sturdy (it's petite). Should I get the same faucet I'm getting in the main sink? (It doesn't have to match.) Also, is a disposal in the prep sink a "must"? I read somewhere that if you don't, you won't use it.

I would say the disposal is a "must," and if you will be filling pots at your prep sink you'll want a higher faucet. If you drain pasta there, you'll also want to make sure your faucet won't get in the way of that.

we didn't put a disposal in our island prep sink, and I regret it! It looks nice, but it's not too useful...

My Moen Brantford prep faucet is about 13" high, taller than you mentioned but it fits very well under my upper cabinets which are about 18" over the counter. It's a high arc with a pullout sprayer and a single handle. It's a traditional(ish) design, but you might look at Moen's other prep/bar faucets if you prefer a more modern style. (p.s. The prices listed on the Moen and Kohler sites are higher than they are in the real world -- just in case you hadn't already realized that and in case it helps.)

Hansgrohe makes good faucets. Huge faucets. :) As far as prep goes, remember the faucets we all grew up with? Low, tiny, worked for mom just fine. I'd get the measurements off the web and go stand at my current sink with a tape measure and figure out where it's different from what I have and if it would bee good different, bad different, or indifferent different.

homepro, one of those Franke GNX sinks might work out perfectly for me. Thanks for the suggestion! Still trying to pick faucets ... ooh, Eliz, I was on the Franke site looking at that sink today! Do you find yourself using the tiny bowl on the left and all the little accessories? You have soapstone installed next to wood ... how pretty! Is your kitchen in the Finished Kitchens Blog? Would love to see more. The only thing that would stop me from getting a sink with 2 drains like that is I'm hoping to include a small trash can mounted on one of my sink base cabinet doors like this which is why I'm leaning toward a sink with a single corner sink drain so I can smoosh all the plumbing and disposal into the left side.

Sorry, for the late reply. I just saw this. No, we've had so many other issues come up with the build that have required all my attention, I haven't had time to focus on this. I do plan to use 30"-36" sinks. I will let the final cabinet layout dictate the sink sizes, so long as we are in that range. If I have an extra 3" of wasted space, I'll go up in sink size, or if I need a few inches for the trash can, I'll go down a couple inches on the sink. The main thing I haven't decided on yet, is whether they'll both be apron sinks or one apron and one under mount. Or, one stainless steel and one fire clay/ceramic/etc? Oh boy, I guess I have a little more left to decide than I thought! I think lead time and prices will point in the right direction on material! LOL! @vevmom, if your island is 10' long, I think the 33" sink will work nicely. That is still less than 1/3 of your island. I think bbtrix's photos above are great for helping to visualize this. (Thanks again bbtrix!) That island is 8' long with a stages 45. You'll have 2 more feet of island, plus a smaller sink. Let me know what you decide.

We have a septic tank so I don't use my disposal much anyway. I am not planning on putting a disposal in my prep sink. I haven't really looked at faucets for it yet.

I have a disposal, and if you plan to use the prep sink for most of your prep work, it makes sense to put one there -- unless you hace a compost bin fro all the trimmings, peels, etc.

I would advise against a bar faucet. I found one that I loved the look of, but it's reach is not enough to hit the middle of the sink. As a result, andy rinsing of veggies, cookware or even hand washing results in splashing out the back of the sink. It's the one thing we plan to replace in our kitchen redo. Smaller size pull downs are limited in choices, but I think they will work better -- plus you have a spray for rinsing veggies, rice, beans, etc. DH is now insisting on a spray for the new faucet and I have to agree that it will be nice to have there.

I got Kohler Vinnata faucets for both sinks, and the one for the prep sink is slightly smaller than the one at the main sink. I use the pull down every time I prep, so I'm really glad I got it. I'm also really glad I got the disposal for the prep sink, too. It makes it infinitely more useful. I don't send much down the disposal, but not having the option would be a real pain.

Definitely pull out or pull down spray faucet & disposal. It's more convenient if you can spray without holding onto a button. The faucet should swivel out of the way for large pots, and you can fill pots without even having them in the sink if you have a pullout or pulldown.

We installed a KWC Domo pullout with center lever in the inside corner of our 5-sided Kohler prep sink, installed in a corner of our island, so we can prep on both sides with maximum counter space. Our disposal is an Insinkerator batch unit, which has its control switch in the stopper.
