I was just curious. Here in Ontario, it will be $9.50 as of March 31/09.

Here in SC I think it is $6.55? And that was after a bump up back in September.

Sounds like you might have aphids (the sticky stuff), thrips (the fly-away ones) and/or fungus gnats (the moisture loving swarmers). The first thing you need to do is create better air circulation in there. Have you tried some kind of house plant insecticide like Safer's Insecticidal Soap spray which is 'safe' for most plants and won't affect pets, etc. (though don't use it near an aquarium or birds just to be sure).

What is your minimum number of shoes to own?

I tossed all of my oddball colored shoes a few weeks ago while I was re-organizing yet again. I had an adorable pair of olive green heels that went with absolutely nothing I own, nor do I have anywhere to wear them. I also tossed some red pumps. I'm not sure where they came from, once again, nothing matched. I slimmed my shoes down to things that I wore often or would need in the future and didn't want to pay for a new pair if required (2 pair of tennis shoes, a black and brown pair of dressy boots, a black pair of closed toe heels, and a super cute pair of wedge sandals that I wear with casual dresses in the event I need to look nice for a meal out without kids). Generally, I wear flip flops all of the time and kept 6 pairs that take up the same amount of space as a pair of tennis shoes. They will break and I will throw them away. When I get down to 2 pair, I stock up again when they go on clearance. I also kept one pair of riding boots, and two pair of snow boots that stay in a cabinet outside of the back door with my rubber boots. I keep my dress shoes in plastic shoe boxes stacked on the floor in the back of the closet and my dress boots in a box in the attic with the other out of season clothing.

Moni--It's now suggested that one's resume not suggest one's age; there are ways to word it so that it can't easily be figured out. I see (after reading articles,) that resumes have changed quite a bit. Also, you have a better chance if you can get your resume to HR through someone already working for the company you're interested in. I guess that's obvious, but it seems like resumes are too easily tossed now, without some kind of an "introduction" by someone on the inside. I'm still looking for that resume-writing article I read as it was very good, but for now this is an article on interviewing: http://finance.yahoo.com/career-work/article/109366/7-things-you-should-say-in-an-interview Granted, it's geared for new college hires, but there may be a couple of points you can pick out of it. I'm sorry this job-hunting is so tough right now. I started working verrrrry part-time recently, subbing in my local district. Are you not interested in nanny jobs now? I saw a friend yesterday who is working part-time as a nanny sub, through an agency. She loves the flexibility. I hope you don't mind my unsolicited advice.

Minimum wage

I live in Ontario, where minimum wage is $11.00 currently. That seems pretty high in comparison to in the U.S., but of course I don't know the cost of living in individual States. My daughter often watches the t.v. show 'House Hunters' as she and her husband will be looking for their first home in a year or so, and they pick up helpful hints from these shows. However, it is disappointing for her to see that a very nice house can be purchased in some cities in Texas, for say $350,000 that would cost about $750,000 where we live! So I'm wondering if the wages are also much lower, in balance with the lower cost of living? For example, here in Ontario, the average starting salary range for new elementary school teacher is approximately $37,000 to $77,000 with the median salary being $57,000 per year. The range reflects location (teachers in major cities make more than those in small rural communities) and any additional skills/certifications that are valued over and above the standard teaching certificate qualifications. DD says if elementary school teachers in Austin Texas are making similar to the median range in Ontario, they're getting an amazing bang for their buck, when it comes to being a home owner!

I didn't know, so I looked it up and this is what I found.

The Texas State minimum wage law does not contain current dollar minimums. Instead the State adopts the Federal minimum wage rate by reference.
Now it is $6.55
Will change on 7/24/09 to $7.25.

Each state has their own minimum wage laws.

Some businesses will fall under state guidelines and some businesses fall under federal guidelines.

It's $8 something here in Oregon. Thank goodness I make more than that or I'd be in real trouble!

I just went to the site Dilly Dally posted and see that Minnesota is one of the few where the minimum wage is lower that the federal guideline, at $6.15.

$9.50 in Newfoundland, next year it will be $10.00

In British Columbia it's $8, if it's your first job it's $6 for the first 500 hours.
I am very thankful I don't have to try and live on either of those wages. No wonder the world is in such trouble if people are expected to survive on $6.55 an hour!

The California state law went into effect January to raise the minimum wage from $7.50 per hour to $ 8.00. Here in Santa Cruz, California some businesses typically offer more than minimum wage. It takes an income of more than $13.00 per hour to cover basic expenses of living in California.

Same thing in my state. Some smaller businesses are not required to comply with federal min wage and get to pay the lesser state min wage.

It's $8.55 in Washington.

I think it was $5.25 when I started working when I was 16, 14 years ago.

Minimum wage is something I would expect to be paid when I'm 17 and just starting to flip burgers at a new job, not as an adult with a few years experience under my belt.

In AR, I believe it's $6.25 an hour.

When I worked as a security guard, most of us got minimum, or maybe 10 cents above.

Few stayed at it for any length of time.

At my last site, where I'd been for about 4 years, when they required that we take on more responsibility, I went to bat for an increase ... which I didn't need, being semi-retired and getting pensions, but the alternate at the time did.

They took me off of the site.
