New Puppy - Kennel Cough

We got a new puppy (Yorkie) from a breeder about 2 weeks ago. Since we got him he has had this choking cough like he has something caught in his throat. We didn't notice it at first because he would never cough while playing; only when resting. Does anyone know if this is likely kennel cough. Any thoughts on what we should do?

That new puppy should be under the care of a Vet right away. You need to be current with the shots, have him/her listen to the heart, and understand anything that may or could be a problem. You also need to be advised as to when to begin heartworm protection and flea tick protection.

I agree with Sammy.

Darn! I hate that the poor thing is sick. One of my Dogs got KC when he had to go to The Puppy Club for a week. I'll do anything to keep from putting my dogs in a Kennel now.

Hmmmmm...I was hoping it would be spelled "Ozzy"...;-) (as in my fave "Prince of Darkness" Rocker!) YES! Scolding about "mistakes" is pointless, as is "rubbing a dogs nose in it!!! I'm SO glad we went thru some training-sessions with Callie!! Learning to have your dog "watch me!", "stand-stay", & "down-stay" is cool!! The importance of the "slip-chain" collar, & a good LEATHER lead are CRITICAL in training. Kind of a good feeling when you have your dog on a "down-stay, & watch-me"....then dropping the lead, & walking in a big circle around them, back to where you started. Their eyes following you all the way too! Oh....btw...I didn't "say" anything either! Just small hand movements! The "come to heel" command, & the leash-free "Heel" take some work, but Callie's "decent" at it! Here she is this past Halloween (a little over 5y/o now)! Faron

You may have to carry her though, if the steps do give her trouble and she can't do them quickly. My beagle wouldnt do the stairs for a while. If she gets frustrated cause she can't get down, she will start to sniff and decide to go somewhere around her, rather than make it down the steps. But we practiced with the steps after potty time with our girl. We'd put toys and play games on the stairs to get her into it, and after a little while she'd take them on. Don't carry her outside though if you plan to try and teach her to only use one spot of the yard (Which i would, female urine is the devil) otherwise she will bolt later on if you dont carry her out. We made that mistake. We carried to beagle into the kennel, anytime we didn't, she'd take off. She's figured it out now and she hasn't taken off in forever but we had to carry her for the longest time.

Thanks! She is a little roughian, till she gets tired then she doesn't mind snuggling. Unfortunately she has been exposed to parvo. We've been waiting out the 2 week quarantine period but this morning she's obviously not feeling well. She has a cough, so I'm hoping its just a type of cold. Given the age, it's probably kennel cough. Sometimes it takes 3 different antibiotics to get rid of it. KC can be stubborn. My puppy had it when I brought her home from the breeder. It turned into pneumonia ( I insisted on a chest x-ray, because I felt rales when I carried her outside. The vets didn't hear anything! I got 2 opinions. Go figure.). Her pneumonia looked weird. Sort of like she could have aspirated something. Anyway, I think she was on 3-4 different antibiotics, before she got 100% better. It took almost a month to eradicate it. Granted, she was only 9 weeks old, and probably around puppies with KC, at the breeder's. Let's hope that's all it is. A dog should not be coughing...Things with heart, lungs, tumors....all come to mind in a mid-older age dog coughing. I think you can bring KC home to your dogs on your clothes, or they can pick it up in the park. That's why if your dog is not immunized for KC, you shouldn't play with puppies at the pet stores...

Only a vet can tell if your dog has kennel cough or some other potentially serious reason to cough (like heart disease or collapsing trachea). In general, dogs with KC cough more with excitement, not rest.

Is it happening more often or still about the same? The incubation period for kennel cough is about 10-14 days so if he has been doing it since you got him I might suspect something else. It could be a reverse sneeze from what you describe also. Best to let your vet decide for sure what it could be.

Kennel cough is like that of our colds, it is a virus and should be treated by a vet, tests need to be done to confirm it is a virus. You should alert the breeder, kennel cough is passed on because of unsanitary conditions. A dog that has the virus can pass it on by licking something, drinking out of a water bowl etc. The breeder should be notified not only to clean up the area but she may be able to help with expenses

Kennel cough is a big problem here. In fact, you can't even have your dog groomed without proof of Bordatella vaccination.

Other things can also cause cough. Heartworm, congestive heart failure, collapsed trachea, and so on. It is a good thing to have the pup checked out before the problem becomes more difficult (and more expensive!) to treat.

Definitely waste no time getting him to a vet. When I adopted my dog I was given a sheet with his current vaccinations and the ones he was still due for, but I brought him to the vet right away anyway just to ensure he had a clean bill of health - and he had no symptoms to make me suspicious. You should definitely bring your little guy in right away and make sure he get treated as soon as possible.
