Doggy Incontinence

My nearly 3 year old Rottweiler has become incontinent. The vet thinks it may be related to her hormone levels (Dog is spayed). Until it is under control, does anyone has any ideas for a diaper? When I first got Tasha she came into heat before I could get her spayed. We tried all of the doggy diapers and she would get them off or they would fall off within minutes. I just bought some XL children's pull ups and they are working better as long as I tug them up fairly often.

Also, if the vet is correct and it is lack of hormones (vet is doing some tests), she recommends a drug that tightens the sphincter muscle rather than hormone replacement (too many side effects). I'm just wondering about phytoestrogens like I take for menapause. Anyone have any thoughts?

spay incontinence is very common. while my 9 year old spayed great dane has never had it, my other female started about 8 months ago, at age 3. she is taking Proin and it has eliminated the problem entirely. i never did put her in diapers...the medication only took a couple of days to become effective and no problems since.

good luck, i know what a problem this can be with BIG dogs!

I have a 12 year old Dobe and she has been incontinent since she was spayed at 6 months of age. I found that switching her to a raw diet (no grains) really helped. As she got older, I used a combination of Proin and Black Cohosh. The Black Cohosh allowed her to remain leak-free on a lower dose of Proin. We also tried estrogen, but it did not work for her.

At age 7 she developed arrythmias due to Dilated Cardiomyopathy. We verified via holter that Proin increased the arrythmias dramatically (3,000 on it, 300 off it), so we discontinued the Proin. I have been living with a leaky girl for 5 years. She is now in congestive heart failure and on a diuretic, so the leaking can get quite bad. It is manageable though.

As with your Rottie, potty pants do not stay on her well. The best thing I found was inexpensive cotton women's panties (high cut) in combination with a sanitary pad. I cut a hole for her tail and tacked a couple gathers in the elastic and they stay on much better than the commercial potty pants.

But I also have a doggie door and want her to be able to use the yard when she needs to, so I don't use the "underoos" very often. I've lined all of the dog beds with vinyl and just launder the covers as needed. I put water proof crib pads down where she lays routinely and she's good about staying on them most of the time. Those go in the washer as well. She is now leaking through the pads so I've added shower curtains cut to size under them and that's working very well to protect my floors. I also use Nature's Miracle Advanced on the carpet and Simple Solution for hard floors as needed.

It can be a pain, but my old girl is well worth it. :o)

This thread is bittersweet. Comforting to know so many others have struggled with “the right time”. I don’t know if anyone will read this, but I think typing this all out will help. I begged to get Luna for my 14th birthday and with my grandma’s help, my mom finally agreed. I had a chaotic upbringing/family and Luna often was my only source of peace in the darkest times. She is a very special dog and many people have said she’s a once in a lifetime type (you know the kind, naturally didn’t need a leash, very docile and sweet). She’s had arthritis for years and I’ve had her on prescription food and pain/joint meds for years. I’ve always been attentive of her health and was a vet tech for a few years so pet health is nothing new to me. Neither is euthanasia. This year, she lost weight, developed dementia, and started having accidents inside. I take her out multiple times a day (at least 6). She likes walks, but gets confused in the yard. I’ve noticed she also cranes her neck a lot. She also licks the carpet or her bed obsessively at times. The last two weeks, she’s had accidents inside almost everyday. We celebrated her 16th birthday on Monday. She couldn’t get up on Tuesday night and was really wobbly this week. I can see her front legs are also starting to shake. When she greets me, she wags her tail low and close to her legs. I don’t want to bump up her meds again because she sleeps all day anyways. When I look into her eyes, I can tell she’s tired. I thought maybe we could celebrate Christmas one more time. But maybe the best gift I can give her is peace…like she’s given me so many times. I don’t know if it’s the right time, but I don’t want her to reach that final stage (not getting up, seizures, crying/barking out of confusion/distress, etc). I am struggling with depression and the sadness I feel thinking about it all is heavy, but I am so grateful for this soul that showed me unconditional love and light.

Ms Minnamouse, can you try to tease out the behavior of her ringing the bell when you take too long with her shoes? Next time, take too long with your shoes, and as soon as she rings the bell, take her out so she knows that bell means instant out (obviously it won't be quite so instant later but it's easy to train the association that way). If she succeeds at that, the following time try taking too long with your shoes and also talking to another person or looking distracted. Dogs can mostly tell when you're waiting/watching them vs. when you're really distracted...I know because I'm trying to extend Bear's stay to include times when I pay him no attention for 10-15 seconds. If I look away he stays but if I sit at the computer he doesn't stay. So you can use that to slowly bridge to farther and less watchful activities, and hopefully she will learn that way. Bear learned from his friend Elmer to ding the doorknob with his nose to go out. He extrapolated that to dinging the pantry door when he wants a treat. Chicken and rice alone is not a balanced and complete canine diet. The most dangerous problem with that diet is calcium/phosphorus imbalance, which can lead to nutritional secondary hyperparathyrodism which causes bone loss. If not corrected, that diet could also lead to life-threatening hypocalcemia causing muscle tremors, seizures, coma, and death. There are other nutrient imbalances as well, but that is the most dangerous. Also despite what the pet food manufacturer's say, variety is the spice of life for dogs too. Changing the meat source and carbohydrate source every once in a while (I do it every 3 months or so) ensures a better mix of nutrients. If you are going to be making food at home, which I encourage, please do some research on it. Dr. Pitcairns' Natural Health for Dogs and Cats has some good recipes. There are recipes online. Chicken and rice is fine in very short term when trying to encourage a dog to eat, or when it has an upset stomach. But it is not a long-term diet. Glad the incontinence stopped and she gained her weight back. It's great that you're willing to make her food to keep her healthy. Just do a little research and get a good recipe. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask. I've got lots of resources here. Dr. Pitcairn's basic Doggie Oats (modified by me to make things easier) 5 cups raw rolled oats (about 11 cups cooked) 3 pounds (6 cups) raw whole, ground, or chopped turkey 1/4 cup veggie oil 1 cup cooked veggies 10,000 IU Vitamin A (optional if using carrots) 400 IU vitamin E 1 adult multivitamin, crushed About 5-6 grams calcium supplement with phosphorus in 2:1 ratio- bone meal is good Bring 10 cups water to boil. Add oats, cover, and turn off heat letting oats cook for 10-15 minutes or until soft. Then combine remaining ingredients and serve. Yield: 18-19 cups, 230 Kcal/cup Ration in cups: toy breeds 1-2 cups; small 4 cups; medium 6-7 cups; large 8 cups; giant 9+ cups. You can substitute different meats and grains for variety. Hi all - thanks for your good thoughts and advice. I asked the vet about a sedative, but he was reluctant to prescribe one because of Angel's lifelong heart condition. She takes a heart pill every day, and you'd never know there was a problem, but he didn't want to risk it. He suggested a drug for dementia, but said it would cost $65 a month and it would take two months to know if it's working. So I passed on that. I do take both dogs out just before I go to bed. Last night she started barking less than a half hour later, so I knew it didn't have anything to do with needing to go out. My dogs are both large--a Husky Shepherd (Wolfy) and a Briard mix. Over the years I've had dogs I can let out by themselves, but not these two. Wolfy would run off for sure (arthritis and all), and I don't trust Angel to stay near the house either. When I put her out the door in the middle of the night she is on a 20' lead attached to my inside door knob (with the door closed). I can bring her in if I need to, but with her dementia she is not as efficient about peeing as she used to be. Sometimes she stands outside sniffing the air for quite a while. I think she sleeps while I'm at work. I base that on the fact that so far she hasn't had an accident while I'm away. I'm gone a minimum of seven hours; this past weekend it was longer. At night I don't dare sleep longer than six hours at a stretch, or I'll find a puddle when I get up. Usually she doesn't bark if I'm downstairs, but occasionally she'll start in. At those times she's not barking at anything--she's just barking. I've tried leaving a light on downstairs at night, but that hasn't seemed to help. You know, these disturbances during the night, the messes to clean up, the unexplained behavior, etc., remind me a great deal of what it was like during the years of my DH's dementia. Strange. I know family patterns sometimes repeat through generations, but I wouldn't think it would happen within one generation, from man to dog. I suspect my karma is involved. Susan

As our pug grew older, he developed the bad habit of "lifting his leg" around the house when we weren't looking. I found some rubber-lined pants for babies (designed to be worn over a diaper). They had velcro tabs for closure. I cut out a hole for his tail, and then used Poise pads or maxi pads that could be changed out as needed.

For him, I got the smallest size available, and I don't know if they make a size large enough for a Rottweiler, but you might check the baby/toddler section at Walmart or Target (etc.) to see. The nice part of it is that the velcro tabs allow you to adjust the snugness so that your girl can't walk out of them.

Proin (phenylpropalanine) is much safer than DES which can cause severe anemia. I have many patients on proin without adverse effects.

pea has been on proin for close to one year without a single problem. she has regular blood work done.

murraysmom, spay incontinence is quite common. i'll be interested to see meghane's comments. i wonder why my senior dane has never developed it but my other dane started at 3 years of age.

Not to hijack the thread but I'm curious about the DES side effects. My dog has been on DES for 4years- she cannot take Proin, spent the weekend at ER vet when she tried it.
