Training Adult Rescue Dog to Poop or Pee Outdoors

I brought home a spayed female 2.5 year old Beagle/Mountain Feist mix 7 days ago; she was a stray -- thin, but otherwise in pretty good shape when they found her. She is extraordinarily loveable (typical for Mountain Feists) and clingy. She peed a little on the rug the first day; I did not scold her, merely took her outdoors. After a 20-minute walk where other dogs have marked, she peed a little more. I drove her to the dog park where she peed a QUART (she's 20 lbs) and pooped. Next day, despite frequent long walks, nothing. In the evening, I took her to dog park; pee and poop in abundance. Have purchased pee sticks; nothing. She is not peeing or pooping in the house -- just "holding it." Suggestions, please. Thank you.

Is she on leash when she won't go and off-leash at the dog park? Do you have an enclosed back yard that she can use off leash?

She is on a leash near the house, but not in the dog park. She is a hunter, so am afraid to let her off lease in case she picks up a scent and takes off into the deep woods (all around me).

For her regular 'walk' I assume you've been walking her around the neighborhood. If so, then I think she has you trained very well :~) Try this: if she has never pooped in the yard, then take her for a walk and bring the poop home and place it where you'd like her to go in the back yard. When it's time to let the dogs out to do their business again, let the poodles out and then take the new dog out for her walk......in the back yard. She may only pee but when she does give her LOTS of praise and (if you want) give her a treat at the same time. She'll quickly learn that doing her business in the back yard comes with a reward......maybe even a treat! My dog can be very picky about where he goes but when the urge is strong enough he'll relent and go where he can. I think with time and patience your dog will start to use the yard. . Mazer, thanks for all the ideas. I do clean up the poop everyday, but it's amazing how much 3 can make in a day and by the end of the day the flies are swarming. I think you've answered a question, but I will ask for clarification. If I put their poop where I want them to go, they will realize that's where they should go? I was afraid it would turn them off to that space because it already smells. I put two wheelbarrows of nice soft shredded mulch under a tree that is 30 feet from the patio to give them a place to go that is still close by. I even take them there every morning, but they just run away, not interested. I think I will try your idea of using the litter box and gradually dragging it in that direction. Our shelters are way overflowing with cats. On the forms I checked the box that said "outside" and no one said that was not ok. In a city it would be very hard on an outside cat, but my last cats lived 15 years here in the country, so it can't be too hard on them. (I am bringing them in at night until they are bigger.) They will all be spayed/neutered. At the shelter I had to pay for it up front when adopting them. They give me a certificate for the vet, and I will be refunded the money after the vet signs off. A great idea as far as I'm concerned. There are already too many unwanted cats and I don't need to bring any more into the world. Thanks for the ideas. Still interested in any more people have.

Dog naturally does not want to eliminate in his den space, that is why crate training could be so successful from the start. It is more difficult if dog was neglected and forced to soil his crate... I would think that you housebreak adult dog same way as you do young puppy. It is really important if you stick to a really tight schedule like taking out your dog every couple of hours or depending on the breed/ small dog small bladder capacity/ even more often. I would go as far as to say - take a week off vacation when you bring dog home and teach the right way you want things happen in the house. Don't deviate from the route- same door, same spot, same way- do it for about a week. Repeating a cue word during actual process is great help for the future. Keep the water on limited basis at least for the beginning couple of days- give him after eating, after runs but do not leave water all the time, take the water last time few hrs before going to sleep. Make sure your dog does do things outside, yes, it could be rain or snow but you plan to be determinate. Remove your carpets in the house if possible at least for the time being, leave as many surfaces that could be easily cleaned or let the dog run only in the area where it could be easily cleaned. Pet stores do sell cleanser but it still does not eliminate smell completely at least for the dog- I can not smell anything of course. you have not told us if the dog is soiling in the crate. If dog can keep his crate clean it is very easy to teach, just take your time and take the dog out, after he sleeps, eats, plays, starts running in the circles and sniffing the ground or couple of hours in the house. Do not teach dog to go on the newspaper or doggie pads if you can avoid it. If it is a senior dog you might run into incontinence or urinary trouble but that is something to discuss with your vet.

Will a new pup in the home, AND going potty inside( his special crate) be a transition that might encourage them to want to copy the pup...... as in, on the floor near his crate with pad, I will be vigilant about disposing of used pads, but fearful of their great noses! ;) I have never trained via pee pads, much less with curious furry friends around. I do want to help my friend( out of town) with initial training. Appreciate all your thoughts.

I think it's a leash issue......and she's not used to being on one while doing her business.
My dog has the same problem but I'm fortunate in that I don't have to worry about him disappearing when he has free rein in the yard.
My suggestion is to try using a long lead (30') or a retractable leash so she can get some distance between you and her.
Each time she goes potty while on the leash....either long leash or short......be sure to praise her and maybe even give a treat. Over time you can slowly shorten the long line and I think she'll eventually get used to a shorter leash and will have no problems going potty.

Thanks, Annz. At the Humane Society, she jumped right in my lap and started kissing me. She had me at hello. Another friend also suggested the extra long leash and your initial suggestion that it was a leash problem didn't dawn on us (duh). Robertz6, we go to the park every day, unless it's raining .. and then she doesn't want to even go outdoors! Thanks to both of you for your help.

My daughter always had very well behaved dogs, who actually obeyed her with voice orders. She never had to leash them when she took them out to potty. Super, only I babysat them often and never felt comfortable they'd obey me and was afraid they'd run off. There are definitely leash-shy dogs for pottying and I had a lot of unproductive walks with one of them and then the poor little thing would hold her bladder in the house until I returned and she was bursting and eventually do her business. Yes, on the long and retractable leash. Pets have potty quirks, just like humans do. Another of her dogs would only poop on a hillside.

Along with the long leash idea,
when she poops and pees in the park, not only praise
her, but teach her the words. Good girl, you pooped!
I don't agree with giving a treat for this function. Just praise.
She should know the words for poop and peeing. When you take her in your yard, you just keep reenforcing the words. Eventually she will be able to poop and pee on command. very helpful, especially when traveling, or you don't have time to wait.
