Have you ever had a water garden and then got tired of it?
Comments (16)Well, both look absolutely lovely. Shady - Is that a real dog?? If so, he looks very, very content. Well, it looks like the electric fence may be working. No damage last night. Hope it lasts. Count yourself lucky if you've never had to deal with racoons. The first time this season I realized I had a problem was the evening I left the pump running all night. I should have know better because these critters love moving water. The pump is just a small recirculating pump with an intake valve on the side and an outflow valve on the top where the water shoots out. I attached a small piece of tubing to the outflow valve so the water would bubble up closer to the surface and cause that nice sound of moving water. Well, one morning when I woke up, I opened my bedroom blinds to take a look at the garden as I always do. The pond was empty of water. The 'coons had managed to move the pump so the outflow valve shot the water out of the pond and drained it. Luckily, there was still about 6 inches of water in the bottom so the fish survived at least. After refilling it, the next night the critters ate all the water hyacinth. These were the water hyacinths I'd over wintered inside the house for the last 6 months. It's funny, but they don't bother anything else in the yard or garden. Just the pond. Once the water lily starts blooming, they eat the flowers and buds. For now, at least this summer, I'll keep the pond, but I have a feeling it's going to go at some point. Comments (12)Thank you all for your support it means the world to me. I've always been the type to beat myself up for not knowing how to do the things just right. It would not be so bad if dad's mind wasn't clear as a bell right now. His abuse of his medicine is a real concern for me. I got a call from him today saying he needs his antibiotic for his sinus, well he'll only take one or two and he says it cures his sinus. You and I know this isn't so and even if it does help it's short term, taking the antibiotics like that can cause harm but no one can get this through to my dad. I have had so many problems with doctors in my past that I don't trust them easily. It was me that saved my husband from a possible stroke, his blood pressure was high and I could tell when it was up but with the sleep apne he had to take showed how bad it was. They could not get it down all night so I marched into our dr.'s and told them about this and they looked back at his chart and seen that it was high everytime he went in for a check up. Now why don't they pay more attention to this? This is why I fear looking for yet another doctor. I have no luck with them. Only once did I have a wonderful doctor and within a year my insurance changed and he didn't take it :( He was the one that listen to me about my weight and took test finding that my thyroid was bad. I went through years with a sore throat and my throat closing up at night in my sleep, waking up unable to breath for 10 or so seconds but felt longer and didn't know if I'd get my breath. If it's wasn't for y'all I don't know if I'd be able to be strong for my dad. I never knew it could be so hard. I look at pictures of my grandparents, dads parents and talk to them and wishing they were here. They had a hard life and I can just image that they went through just what I am now. They took care of my great grandmother for 17 years then told my grandmothers brother it was time for him to care for his mother and give them a break. Great grandmother was called little granny and I never seen pictures of her but heard great stories about her, I found a picture of her the other day and I'm so happy to finally seen her, she past away a few years before I was born. Sorry for being long winded. Barbara...See Morecan lighting - more confused than ever! can you help me?
Comments (5)Look at the Halo website. That particular "can" may be used with several different trims. If you click on the trims, you will see the maximum wattage that can be used with each trim. The "ice light" and the "metal baffle" can be used with 60 Watt PAR 16 bulbs. The "coilex" can be used with 50 Watt PAR 20 bulbs. I think that the PAR bulbs seem to give out more actual light than the regular bulbs. You can also buy a "socket extension". One end screws to the lightbulb and the other end then screws into the can. That will make the bulb less recessed (but it will also glare more). I hope that between the 50 or 60 watt PAR light bulbs and/or the extensions, you can solve your problem. Good luck!...See MoreRainy spring means more volunteer seedlings than ever
Comments (9)On my land, seedlings come and go . In wet years they proliferate . Deer eat some and some survive and then the dry years come and most die. These last 10 years have been awful for tree regeneration. We usually have one good year if we are lucky followed by several dry years that kill off the seedlings.I cage them in the wet years to protect them from browsing only to have them disappear in the dry years from lack of water . I have seen this more than once. It is irritating to see my efforts fail. The last couple of years have been good for trees. I do have some that after this wet summer to come ( with the developing strong Midoki El Niño) should be getting strong enough to make it through some dry spells that are coming. I am seeing some three year old trees. This gives me a lot of hope. The two oceans are "flipping" into a cooling off period and that means more extended droughts for Texas just like in the 50's. More La Niñas then her wet brother. This year I need to cage the best trees and map them. I need to set up an irrigation system that will give me some way to get water to them so I do not loose all of them when the drought worsens . I got lots of babies but I need teenagers and young adults. I have decided to ramp up my efforts and change the formula by adding supplemental water in the heat of the summer.. I was out walking and found two more madrones and some escarpment black cherries, bumela and many red Oaks. . A small twister took some of the old Spanish oaks down but a small one is under what was the parent tree. I am hoping that something might come up from the roots....See Moretamarahl
