Well hopefully the instructions given to Wal-mart (that I read) was to scan the UPC to be a 'no sale' at the check-out. Somebody just put it back up no doubt. All the workers were probably not informed or didn't pay attention. When I was in Wal-mart and the worker at the pet area was getting fish I mentioned to him the recall and asked did they pull all the offending brands/types and he said 'what recall, I didn't know about that'. Be safe and don't buy any low grade foods right now, or anything from any of the listed companies. I know Pedigree is not affected. It is made by Mars (the candy people). Their catfood is Whiskas I think. Don't buy Friskies anything. Purina is being sneaky. Once again - Dick Van Patten foods are OK to use. It does cost way more than the cheap stuff but does not have cheap products in it. The dog food (regular size can) is $1.59; and the catfood (regular size can) is $1.29 here at PetCo. One can of dogfood lasts me 3 days as I don't use much when I mix it with the dry. After reading much on-line about cheaper pet foods I've decided to make this food change permanent, including using the dry by Van Patten. I also supplement my Riddler's food with small amounts of fresh carrot, apple, and green beans. He is on a diet right now, so the beans are to add bulk without calories. The cat's have been tougher to switch over which is to be expected. I bought various flavors and some they turn their nose and others they like, but the more days go by I will know which one they like and buy only that. I'm not into variety wtih cats - it upsets their stomachs. My dog is NOT a picky eater. He had duck and potatoes this morning. LOL

I found another article on Truth or Fiction about it. It says: Summary of the eRumor: There are several versions of this eRumor but all of them say that commonly sold cocoa mulch contains theobromine which can be lethal to cats and dogs. One version tells the story of a pet owner who lost a dog because of cocoa mulch. The Truth: It's fairly well known that some animals should not eat chocolate and according to the experts we checked with that warning applies to cocoa mulch as well, although the number of reported animal deaths is very low. The villain is theobromine, a chemical that is similar to caffeine. It can give a boost to humans but dogs and cats cannot always metabolize it successfully and it can be lethal to them. That is especially true of the shells of the cacao beans, which are ground up and used in cocoa mulch, and contain even higher levels of theobromine than the bean. Most packaging of cocoa mulch makes it clear that it's not for human or animal consumption. It also appears that all cocoa mulch is not the same. One manufacturer we checked with, the maker of Mirana cocoa mulch, said that their mulch is the result of a series of processing steps and that the level of theobromine in their mulch is barely detectable. We did find at least one documented case reported in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).. The report says that a dog that had ingested cocoa mulch developed convulsions and died 17-hours later. An analysis of the stomach showed ingested cacao bean shells and lethal levels of theobromine. The AVMA has issued a release because of this new eRumor about cocoa mulch. It says that according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), there have not been any reports in 2006 of animals dying from cocoa mulch ingestion. In the years spanning 2004 and 2005 there were 16 cases of cocoa mulch ingestion reported, none of which resulted in death. The ASPCA says that the account of the death of the dog named Calypso that is in the eRumor is "suspect." The symptoms are not completely consistent with death from cocoa bean ingestion. The ASPCA says that although vomiting is a common result, the dog is described as having had a single seizure the next day during a walk and then dying suddenly, which is not what would be expected. iVillage has been part of NBC since 2006. NBC is owned by GE. NBC is now on the auction block so I imagine when it's eventually sold GW will be part of the deal. boxerpups - I am so sorry for your loss. Pets are family and provide so much love and affection that is unspoken and unconditional. We lost our beloved lab of nearly 10 years this April just shy of his 10th birthday. He developed a splenic tumor and was very sick. We opted to operate b/c the other choice was to put him down or let the tumor eventually explode (which it was close to at the time). We knew the chances of it being a cancerous tumor were very high but we wanted to give him every chance he could at life and there was a small chance it was non cancerous which gave us hope. We operated and he had a rough time recovering b/c of the size of the tumor and b/c his heart had been so stressed due to the tumor. We checked him out of the hospital against medical advice after nearly a week in the vet hospital b/c he wasn't eating on his own or really perking up if we weren't there. We brought him home and he was never happier to be home, went out in the yard, went upstairs (even though he wasn't supposed to - he always slept upstairs next to my side of the bed), snuggled with all of us and ATE! We thought he was going to be okay, drs were amazed he responded so well to being home. Well he passed away the next morning. :( Sometimes pets need the extra time with their owners as much has we need the extra time with them. Our dog NEEDED to come home and one extra night with us, check out the yard, go all over the house and make sure all of us were okay too. Turns out his tumor was not cancerous after all. We are glad we operated and glad we got one more night. So just because YOU needed the time, don't think your beloved pet didn't need the extra time too to say goodbye and spend with you and your family.
