who has knowledge of good breadmakers, please

I don't have my breadmaker anymore- although it is probably time anyway for an update- mine was about 16 years old- a West Bend.

I have an idea I am going to be told by the doc after some testing that I need to go gluten-free. I see only a few machines have settings for this- it is an important settings in todays world. Who has such a brand that has this setting? How do you like your machine- reality, please, ie, (not because your hubby gave it to you as a gift). If possible I would prefer a horizontal loaf.

I would suggest a Zojirushi, and to go along with that check out the link below to King Arthur Flour below for a copy of the book, "Gluten Free Baking For The Bread Machine". You may want to get the book first and see if they suggest any particular machine. King Arthur also has Zojirushi Bread Machines available - and shipping is free just now with a $60 (or larger) purchase ;-). You can modify a Zo beyond the normal settings.

I have many books that have gluten-free recipes for the bread machine, so make sure you check what's available at your local library:

I should have read a bit more after finding the link to King Arthur Flour because the book, "Gluten Free Baking For The Bread Machine" are all designed for and tested with a Zojirushi.

How much of a leaf cover do you need for that? I don't really know. This is the first time I am planting in the front yard woods, after picking up sticks and limbs, trimming up some trees, pulling up tree seedlings, pulling up 'some' vines, and digging out lots and lots of May Apples, and raking aside all the leaf cover. Stringing the rows and doing the actual planting is the easiest part of the whole planting experience. I'd say the leaf cover is at least 6" or so. I kept watching the weatherunderground on the computer all day, hoping it would get warm. Even though it wasn't warm at 4 PM (was just 34 though it was sunny) I headed out to get a few planted. Surprisingly, I wasn't cold, the soil was wet, but not clumpy, my hands didn't get cold, and I managed to plant 15 little bags, 47 total bulbs. so all those from the front yard (city tree) went to the city for composting. How I wish I had trees that weren't all in the woods or at the edge of the woods. All the leaves at the edges of the yard are full of sticks and twigs. I used to sometimes go to friend's houses and do their leaves, just to get to bring them all home for the veggie garden. I've got this wonderful leaf shredder that reduces them 13 to 1, turning leaves into what I call brown gold. I think the little willow leaves should be fine. Last year I remember "discovering" that the open areas were frozen solid while those with some cover were not. I might be able to exploit that some year if I knew what to aim for. How deep? I wonder if you couldn't just cover an area with either clear plastic or black plastic to keep the warm in and the freezing cold out, thus lengthening the planting season so you could get in on the late sales, like from B and B's.

I would second the vote on Lukas. They are expensive, but the selection is great and they have great staff. For annuals their prices are on a par with Home Depot and Lowes (.88 for 4" pot). I like to go there for annuals because they often have some unusual ones. Found some duck foot coleus there that I just loved one year. They also will special order plants for you. A friend ordered a some wisteria through them, even though they warned her not to ("Wisteria WILL NOT grow here!) She proved them wrong, though - you should see her back yard is brimming with the stuff - and doing very well. Unfortunately she's moved from Oviedo so I won't see her gorgeous wisteria blooming in the spring next year. Anyway, Lukas is great. They have coupons in the Orlando Sentinel from time to time. I think it depends on if you are making white bread or whole wheat. I make my own bread as well. I grind my own flour now too. Takes all of five minutes. From the research I've done it seems the Kitchenaid mixers are designed to handle "normal" batches of white bread dough. They aren't designed for multiple loaf size batches, or for whole wheat dough on a frequent basis. It sounds like they will burn up after a while. As a result, I've just purchased the Bosch Universal Plus mixer from Pleasant Hill Grain. Since I fell a couple of weeks ago and broke some ribs I haven't gotten to use it yet. I had to dust my bread machine off so we could have bread in the mean time. I'm hoping to try out my new toy very soon. The Bosch Universal Plus is designed to handle a huge amount of dough, including 100% whole wheat. It can also be used to make cookies, cakes, whip cream, etc. Several breadbakers who have written cookbooks swear by this machine. I figured I could make large batches of dough, freeze some loaves, and have dough handy for rolls and pizza as well. I'm suspecting my Kitchenaid mixer will be collecting some dust if this machine does what everyone claims. Sandy

I also would recommend a Zojirushi. I bought one at the thrift store and it is a work horse. And makes great bread every time. The company has also been great about customer support even though I didn't buy it new. They have answered my questions and sent me all kinds of information.

I'm another one that got a zoji at the thrift store. I've only made about 8 loaves so far, but they have all been really good. It is an absolute workhorse!

My Daddy has 3 bread machines at this time..he loves to bake bread! He has one Zojirushi from King Arthur and two Panasonic that I purchased for him from Amazon.com. He loves these Panasonic machines and I think they preform better than any machine he has ever had. The bread comes out beautiful and the texture is great! Hope this helps ... when I was searching I read all the reviews on Amazon.

wow- I knew the Zojirushi were supposed to be great -better be at those prices- I think they are about $200/more. I know they and Cuisinart can do gluten.
