Heather, I can stand them a while.. We will eventually change them though.
I'm not keen on the cabinets either, but I could probably add some trim pieces to change it up a bit..I am more of a pull person, so the knobs are going first.

I love the Corian in my current kitchen, but I've been thinking of soapstone.
The Corian behaves very well for all the dough and cooking/baking I do.

And in about a year a gas range will be put in.

But those aren't musts, they are wants.

Kamren was with us yesterday and likes it. But it's 4 or so houses away from a friend of ours. He walks to their house from our current location all the time.
So he'll have a short commute now.. Lol..

Kellan could care less..lol..he's only home another 16-18 months anyway. He'll be heading off to university, likely out of state.

The only advice I can offer is for you to spend a bit of time planning where you want/need things to be in the kitchen. Think about your routines when cooking/baking, and where it will be most convenient to have things. I know that whenever I've moved, it has always made me feel more "settled" when I can get stuff done in the kitchen without having to hunt for things, or without having to take extra steps to get what I need.

Yipee! I'm very happy for you, my friend. Packing and moving is a GREAT way to pare down the 'stuff ', streamline, throw away, and donate. Make your kids do the same with their 'stuff'.

I'm crazy....I like packing and unpacking!

What great news this morning......I was so impressed with the second house.

Lindsey, I'll have to ponder on that. The kitchen is so compact, compared to the one I'm in. But I designed the one I'm in, so it works very well.

There is a bit of sadness to leave somewhere we've made our own for 20 years..all the colors, the bathroom and kitchen remodels ...all our design choices. Last spring we even chose the new siding and roof colors.

I've raised the boys in this house. I grew up in this house.

But on the other hand..I am jumping into the next phase of our life super excited.

I love soapstone and that is likely what I would go with too. There are a lot of color variations in soapstone too. I am not a granite person. I also love the colors of slates.
I had to put post it notes on my cabinets for a while when I first moved to remind me at a glance what was in them. I don't have nearly the size kitchen I had before and lots of my stuff has no home here. I got a nice metal shelving rack like you see in commercial kitchens and put it on one wall in the dining room which is right off the kitchen and put my less used items on it. We rarely ever use the dining room anyway. You would think with 4000 sqft they would have given this house a much bigger kitchen LOL

Yes, load the car, drive to new house, unload, put away, drive back, load the car, etc. We did this when we moved. We had a week to move, so every evening after work I moved stuff and then on Saturday the big push. The furniture was moved by DH and a couple of friends in a borrowed truck.

When you get your own things in the house, it won't be quite so white. It is a very nice looking house. looks like a good move for you.

Yes Rose, given lifes little curve balls it is our first and hopefully only home purchase. We will be celebrating our 45th and 50th birthdays in our new home in July and our 22nd wedding anniversary.

Oh most definitely Nita, it's not far from where we are now.

I'm another what did the home inspection find, before signing?

Lol..home inspection is 9 am Tuesday..

May I suggest you get to the house before the home inspector. This is someone YOU chose, right, and you will walk through WITH him?

We made a big mistake when a seller was living in the home we were buying. She apparently bribed the inspector before we arrived. He then failed to report that an addition to the house had sunk nearly an inch -- something every builder we later consulted spotted immediately, from the exterior of the house.

It would have cost $10K minimum to remedy this fault. His refunding the cost of the inspection was little consolation. (I think it was about $300.) Home inspectors' contracts cover them very well against any charges or lawsuits.

Be your own 'home inspector' along with the person you've hired. Take photos of every aspect of the house. When you do your walk-through before closing, make sure nothing has changed for the worse.

Our inspector was chosen by my friend/agent. Yes, my husband is taking the day off so that we both, plus Lisa will be there. I spent an hour in the house Thursday during the septic inspection.
I'm thinking about bringing over a sheet pan of cookies and baking them while there..lol..just to make sure the oven is working right too. My husband says I'm crazy.
Lisa says expect to spend about two hours with him. He's very thorough.

Great idea about baking the cookies in the new house, Terri!! At least you will know that the oven works properly. Something you wouldn't get a chance to find out until it was too late.

I'd handle the oven differently, realizing the house isn't yours until you've signed at closing and they've handed you the keys ;)

Take an oven thermometer with you, put it in the oven, turn it on to preheat, check at intervals while you are there. Understanding that 25 degrees one way or the other is generally within the industry standard. Turn everything off again and take your thermometer with you when you leave. I don't mean to put any downers on your excitement, but I'd have been more than annoyed if a potential buyer had actually cooked something in the kitchen of the house I had listed for sale, when I'd turned myself inside out making sure everything was move in ready and gleamingly clean down to fingerprint free. What took place once those signatures were on the page, entirely not of my interest.

The home inspector checked to see that all controls responded on the stove, and ran the dishwasher to make sure all cycles completed.

I think the cookie baking is a great idea -- after the inspector has checked the oven, of course! Fun idea to share a treat at the end of the inspection. (Nobody needs to know this was a test.)

Regarding our house with the sunken foundation...we should have insisted the seller move all the stuff she had piled into that room. If we had simply tried to open the windows in there we would have discovered they were jammed, and why. This is no time to be 'polite' -- *paranoid* is good!
