New (and cheap!) dining chairs

I've been wanting a new set of dining chairs for several years. I had my eye on some nice antique reproductions, Windsor chairs in black, and have been saving for them (the set cost around $700 for six, which is really not a bad price considering the quality). But I was concerned that they might be too big for my table and my space. So I've been looking here and there for others.

Then I realized recently that I have to have a new roof put on the house this spring. That takes care of any money I might have put aside. Still, I've been increasingly dissatisfied with my old chairs.

So........this week I saw "farmhouse" Windsor chairs on sale at K-MartÂfor $25 apiece. A set of six chairs for $150! They're painted black, with a stained wood seat. I went to look at them and liked them, although I hoped they wouldn't scream CHEAP when set around an antique wood table. I've gotten pretty good at envisioning things in my house, so I came home and stared at the dining table and decided they'd look great.

They come two to a box, and unfortunately I'll have to make three trips to town to get all six chairs. I brought two home tonight, and they really do look great! Solid wood, assembled in the USA. Definitely can't beat the price.

The sale lasts until tomorrow at 10:00 p.m., folks . . .

Those will look super, Susan! And few things in life feel greater than finding a bargain. When you get them all home and around the table, I want to see a picture!!

I think the warmer color is a great idea. But what stands out for me in the room is everything is angular, straight, hard lines. There's nothing soft and curvy (except the archways, which I love). Even your chairs have square backs; the rug has some curves, but overall reads geometric. For me, that makes the room feel stiff and uptight, not a place to linger and relax. Maybe lose the lamp and collection of little stuff on top of the sideboard and put something large and curvy up there--either on top or hanging on the wall behind. That would help incorporate the archways into the design, too.

I loved the Thompson chair, but they don't make it anymore. Their Cardinal is the closest current model. Your home can handle more substantial furniture than mine though (I've got a small 50s house with low ceilings). For your space I might like the uphostered version of the Lecture chair, or the Bracket. Cushions are a really nice feature in a dining chair, and leather or vinyl upholstery works great with kids.

How old are your current chairs? Is the construction still stable? Do they wiggle? If they are sturdy, hang on to them and recover. You will pay more than $1,000 per chair today for ones that are quality and will last decades. Did you get multiple quotes for upholstery? And did you know you can purchase your own fabric too? $310 per chair is not unreasonable. But, I have found quotes to vary wildly. Sometimes you can find someone doing fantastic work for much less than others. But they won’t be on google or have websites. Please post after pics! I can understand wanting a new look and hope you make it happen with these same chairs. Have you thought of a new chandelier in addition to new curtains?

They'll look great with an antique farm table. I really like the black on the chairs. It provides a nice contrast with the honey stain on the seat. We bought Windsor chairs that match our dining table but the store only sold all brown or brown with hunter green. We picked the green but I would have preferred the black - it's just a classic look. And you got a great price.

I love them!! I had a light windsor table and chair set and wish I woulda have kept them now...

McMann!! Paint them!! it's gotta be an easy job...mask off the seat...lay down some paper and get the spray can out!! black over green should be really easy!!

I have to amend that, Marilyn. The box says Assembled in U.S.A., but when I turned a chair over I found Made in Malaysia written on the bottom. Take your pick. :-)
