Need help finding 36' range hood liner/fan

I am usually excellent at finding appliances online but for some reason I just don't get it this time. My mom is getting a new kitchen and needs to find a 36" built in range hood fan/liner with at least 400 CFM venting outside. It will be built in to the custom wood range hood that the cabinet maker is making. Our budget is $700 and it needs to be stainless steel. Can anyone help? I really don't know what I am looking for.

I found this a difficult thing to find and purchase also. The manufacturers tend to sell the hoods in components (liner, hood, motor, muffler, etc), which makes things needlessly confusing for consumers.

But after much work (and some research on Gardenweb), I found and just purchased this Kobe unit - model IN2636SQB . It is a hood insert that works with a custom hood cover and it has all the components built in so you don't need to buy seperate motors, housings, etc. This one vents to the outside of your house and has multiple speed settings, with the max at 700 CFM. From what I understand, the unit is fairly quiet and has a well designed motor/fan system.

And the price is pretty darned close to your budget. With free shipping, it costs $724.

Oh, wait a second. I just noticed that if you pay by check rather than credit card, you can get a 3% discount. This brings your price down to $702.

Most of the other units we looked at were pricing out in the low to mid 1000's. Hope this helps. Good luck on your search.

I have a 'Sirius' brand hood liner that meets your specs, and I'm really, really happy with it. (Now 5 years old.) It's powerful and quiet, and simple to build into a custom hood.

If you Google 'Sirius range hood', you can find places to buy online - that's what I did. OR, if you can find a retailer, I understand better deals may be available that they're not allowed to advertise online.

Hi hollysprings, Thanks for replying. The hood surround will be wood, but chimney style. There will be some metal detailing, but the surround is rift sawn white oak. I hope this will look as good as the architect & designer & husband seem to think. They have a plan. :-) I have a back-up plan just-in-case, but am willing to try theirs first. So far, I've loved everything they have put their heads together on, so I'm willing to give this a go, even if I don't quite "get it" yet. But, in the meantime, I need to figure out the insides...

Do you think I should go with the 48" wide x 27" deep hood over the 36" range? That run of cabinets has a 24" wall oven tower on the right and the range to the left of center so the prep island is not so much a barrier island. I can control the length of the run by changing the opening from the kitchen to the keeping room. The plans have it as 12' into a 13.5' room. When I played around with it, I reduced the opening to 11' and the range fit nicely with a 42" hood. The cabinet maker reduced it even more by the way he shifted the range down while maintaining a 48" hood. I don't know if he realized it, but he shut the opening down to 8'-8" which is unsatisfactory. That is the one place in the house that we want a really open feeling. I'll work on it over the weekend & post a layout and some renderings. I did a quick look online & really like this corbel style if I could get it in the right proportions:

We used a Tornado II by Zephyr. It's an insert that we built a hood around to fit my situation. I saved quite a bit of money by buying my insert directly from an ebay dealer that I bought almost all of my appliances from. (saving-u-money) is his eBay handle. I can provide more info if you want to compare prices. Here's a photo of my hood. Though not completed, you can see how a liner works. You can also download a PDF info from Zephyr that will give you a drawing, schematic, and other info that will show you exactly what you will need to do this. I love my hood. The photo online shows that they've redesigned it a bit. Mine actually looks like the Tornado III, but I know it was a II with 1,000 CFM. FWIW, I love my hood. It's a powerhouse and doesn't blow you out of the water. It's a solid whooshing sound, not whiney and tinney. My brother lives next door about 300' away. (We both have 1.5 acres.) He has called me before to ask, "When's dinner?" because he can smell what I'm cooking. My kitchen vent is away from his house, too. When I've told him that I'm not grilling and I'm cooking inside and not outside, he can't believe it. It has to be this powerful hood. Here is a link that might be useful: Tornado II

I have a Mondernaire hood insert, but I'm not going to be too much help because the hood maker (Stansci), uses the mondaire insert and then builds the hood around it. So, you need to get the specs for the liner you want and give them to the cabinet maker. By the way, I like my modernaire. I think you can get all the specs for the differnt blowers/liners on line. I think Best by Broan has specs that I looked at before I went with the Stansci design. HTH

So from what I understand, both of these models come complete? Just purchase and give to cabinet maker to install in custom wood range hood and ask hubbie to hook up vent outside and done? It's terrible when you are that confused on one thing hey? We just bought a kitchenaid under the cabinet ss hood and just hooked it up no problems. But for some reason this stuff really confuses me.

Both Vent-A-Hood and Faber liner inserts have been recommended by my hood designer. I'm trying to decide between the two. VentAHood has more lights & settings, but I'm put off by terrible tales of cleaning up after the centrifugal filtration. Faber only has two lights, angled forward from the back... both brands (not the same modles) have mid-range ratings from Consumer Reports... How to decide?

Just wanted to clarify--does this Kobe includes the stainless steel liner insert for a 36"? I was looking at the Kobe website and at the link you listed, and it appeared that you would still have to order the SS liner separately, correct??

Like you and others here, I am finding this to be harder than it (seems like it) needs to be...
