Maltese wounds

Does anyone have any thoughts about what might be going on with this 7 year old Maltese dog?

About 3 weeks ago the groomer at Pet Smart noticed he had a bump under his eye. The owner allowed the vet there to examine the dog. He was prescribed an antibiotic (Simplicet). They were not sure if he was growing a tumor or had an infection. The bump got worse and he was brought to his regular vet. The doctor gave a second round of the same antibiotic. She didn't do anything to try to drain the wound and now it's starting to ooze on it's own (pussy discharge). The owner tried a topical in addition to the antibiotic (neosporin). The vet said it's better to just try to keep it clean with peroxide so that's what she's doing.

The dog is now on a 3rd round of antibiotics (half-dose now) and has another wound on the other side of his face!

The owner said she's looked it up and the only problems with the Maltese are along the lining of the eye. The wounds are lower. The dog had his teeth checked by both vets and there were no signs of problems. The only thing I could come up with was that he got batted by a cat or something outside and developed an infection that way. But then he would have had to had 2 altercations for wounds on both sides...

We discussed her going to a third vet now for another opinion. If there is an infection there that hasn't cleared up by now, shouldn't the vet be draining it? Is there anything that might cause this problem in a Maltese other than another animal wound?

I've been staying far, far, far away from this thread. Still no budging Rich into anything with four legs and fur in the house. Fish won't cut it for me since lap time would be severely limited. I trying to maintain the "it's really okay with me" attitude but ...... I respect his feelings -- though it's getting harder. Not quite ready to just show up with a creature, despite the promise that according to Chelone regular beatings could be perpetrated to the critter's benefit :_)))))) Perhaps I could remove the vole traps, tell him they didn't work, and lobby for a kitten??? LOL Martie

Don, he wasn't my first parrot....He could be likened to finally getting a Porsche, if you're into cars. I brought him home when he was 5 weeks old.... about mid-April, 1999. Here is his baby picture when he came home. I'd been going over to my friend's house (the breeder), to hand feed him when she pulled him from the nestbox. I continued to hand feed him, with what is called "abundance feeding" so he weaned himself, at 22 weeks old, without feeling deprived. He weighed 600 grams as a well fed baby boy, and he weighs that now as an adult. He has beautiful feathers, no fat, great muscle tone especially in his breast which allows him to fly efficiently.....but consider that birds are so aerodynamic, with hollow bones, hollow feathers, they eat moderately frequently, also poop frequently and do it almost EVERY time before they take flight....which is a clue to imminent flight, by the way.

That's a good idea gscienchick, think I'll do that. I think thatÃ¢ÂÂs safer! Her dog could be on a special diet where the treats might not be appreciated. She also doesnÃ¢ÂÂt strike me as a dress your dog like a person type. IÃ¢ÂÂm thinking a CarrabbaÃ¢ÂÂs gift card because if she happens to be a vegetarian at least there are some great salad choices, or pasta or flatbreads. ThatÃ¢ÂÂs it then! Can you believe I still havenÃ¢ÂÂt come down from the trauma? I was so keyed up all night. And guess what I saw in the backyard today a big daddy raccoon that somehow injured a bluebird. I saw the bluebird first flying all low and whacky and then saw the big raccoon go in for the kill. My bad dreams and thoughts all last night were not unfounded. We have lots of owls as well as Bob Cats and big snakes out here. Normally the Rottweiler keeps everything at bay but he is out of commission due to the ligament operation. Again, thank you all so much for being so kind and letting me vent my worries.

I own a Pit Bull and my last dog was a Pit Bull. Both were/are excellent pets- loyal, smart, loving, and neither were aggressive toward people. They were both under voice command and well behaved in public. We are kinda of Yuppies so it is often a surprise to people that we own a Pit Bull. In fact many people comment on what a beautiful, sweet dog she is and when they ask what she is are surprised to learn her breed. Because I realize that people are afraid of the breed--when I walk Zoey I make her sit off the sidewalk when people pass including people with other dogs. Passing dogs may lunge or bark but she sits quietly waiting. I had to stop going to dog parks because she was often harrassed by smaller dogs whose owners allow them to bite and nip---she never bit back...I would call Zoey back and she would sit beside me- I have also been bitten by little dogs trying to get to Zoey. One man even got mad at me saying that Pit Bulls should not be allowed at the park because they invoke aggressiveness...When I reminded him that it was his Jack Russell biting my dog and my leg he continued to rant about Pit Bulls. Any dog- Pit Bull and little dogs included- that shows aggressiveness toward humans and/or other living things regardless of the amount of damage should be put down. It should not be breed specific. As a child I was bitten several times by a neighbors dog (a black lab who was allowed to roam free). My parents complained to them and the police several times but nothing was done. When the dog came into our yard and bit my brother on the face drawing blood from his lip- my father shot it and brought it back to the owners. I do admit that there are a lot of strange people who get Pit Bulls for fighting or bragging rights-animal welfare groups are trying to weed these people out before they adopt. My heart goes out to people injured by any dog due to poor socialization and/or irresponsible owners. In the end it is the owners responsibility to supervise the pet...as wonderful as Zoey is I would never leave her alone with a child of any age that she does not know or play unsupervised with another dog and I would put her down if she ever showed aggression toward a human.

and one other note, he's been wearing an e-collar most of the time so he doesn't irritate the wounds.

The site below discusses exactly what you're seeing and what my suspicions were.....something to do with the sinus or teeth.
I'd get a 3rd opinion since the antibiotics don't appear to be having an effect.

Also, neosporin isn't really an antibiotic so if that's all he's been getting then it's no surprise he's not better. The wound is already open, so it's probably draining on it's own.....as much as it can.

Poor guy........3 weeks in a collar? : (
Is the collar really needed? My guess is that it's only irritating the site more.

Thank for that link, Ann. That does sounds exactly like what I saw on the dog, too . Could there be a problem underneath that would only show up on Xrays (on both sides)? Both vets did a visual of his teeth. I will ask my friend in the morning if the regular vet knows about the second spot yet. I get frustrated when I can come on this forum and get a probable dx so quickly and the treating doctors have the animals suffering for these long periods of time. At least he doesn't seem in pain and he's prancing around like a pup.

She put the neosporin on in addition to the rx antibiotics just to try to help it along.

Yes, she was putting on the collar as much as possible to try to keep him from pawing at it so it would heal. It's far enough down where it's not hitting his face. But, LOL, he likes to wear it! Funny guy!

Yes, x-rays would be needed to see what's happening in that area of the skull.
A problem with the root or sinus would be within the bone and not something a vet will see with a visual exam.

I just wanted to give an update about the dog. He did need to have 2 teeth removed. He's doing much, much better and the infection on his face is finally starting to clear up. He's got his follow-up appointment next week but all looks well!
