Babkas are a hit!

This year I made one recipe of Cinnamon Babka to give to family and I already have an order for Christmas 2009 from my sister. She wants some to give as gifts next year.

I plan to experiment with round loaves, regular loaves, and ring loaves, size of pans, topping or no topping, etc. I use Marcy Goldman's recipe but have read that Martha Stewart's recipe is very good also. I prefer the Cinnamon - just can't face chocolate early in the a.m. My plan is to buy the ingredients and see how many babkas I can get from that one purchase. I've seen them online for $13 each for a regular loaf pan size, shipping not included. I want to make something for my time, but the main cost will be in the butter, sugar, eggs, cinnamon, etc. as the dough is very rich but oh so good!

Anyone here have experience with babka or baking to sell to others?

Oh yum, Teresa. I didn't know what babka was so I googled it. They look delicious! For an idea of pricing, google "babka" and you will see many places that ship them. I'm soooo tempted to buy some.

Actually, your location would be considered part of the greater San Francisco Bay Area, rather than the central valley, although your location is as much influenced by the central valley as by the bay. Your additional comment about large existing pine trees in your adjoining neighbor's yard may not be as bad as you think, unless they are to your south, in which case you will most definitely have limited sun in winter. You might find it just as practical to get yourself some half oak wine barrels and put these on your patio if this is your sunniest spot, and this size container is plenty large enough to grow tomatoes next summer, or use for winter veggies. For a winter vegetable garden, it does help to locate it in maximum sun, but if you get some of your winter veggies started now while they still get sun, some vegetables such as carrots, peas, lettuce, radishes, most root vegetables in general that are cool season growers will perform okay even with less than full sun,(but of course more is always better). You might also find that things like Alpine Strawberries do okay in less than full sun. Get yourself a copy of the Sunset Western Garden Book for general info on what cool season crops are possible in your area; as you do get frost and potentially some ground fog in winter, this will also tend to make winter crops slower growing or more subject to frost damage than locations closer to the bay. You might also consider some perennial crops such as Artichokes, which can be planted to grow over the winter also. Good luck with your endeavor, and realize that besides the shade from your neighbor's pines, there might also be a lot of moisture stealing roots, and raised beds with added top soil will probably give you better results than planting directly in the ground where large tree roots will compete with the vegetables.

We can all thank Hank Zumach for this idea. He did his in June. He would take a photo, count eyes, and measure each plant as well as leaf size at the same time each year and keep glorious records. That is where Papou got the idea too. Here in May they all look good. ;-) I just pick a day, at dusk to avoid strong shadows, take a generic photo of each one. Then, sometime during the next week or so I add text to each pic with the name of the hosta. Works for me, and I'm glad it works for you too, Bkay. Mocc coined the phrase "school pictures" which is the perfect description. -Babka

The photos are great. Thanks much. I've been surfing and have found quite a few sites with grab bars that also look good. Moen makes a much cheaper version, but it has a plastic insert, and I want something that will be more permanent. http://www.wrightstuff.biz/cornershelf.html Here is one take on which type to install: "Never anchor a grab bar into drywall , it will not hold and you could be seriously injured. How to properly install a grab bar is to screw it into the wall studs or to blocking in your walls. If your walls don't have blocking, add it by nailing a piece of plywood into the studs. The plywood should be ÃÂ¾ inches thick and 6 to 12 inches wide. A grab bar should have 1-ÃÂ½" of clearance from the wall. Wall mounted grab bars come in several lengths. Deciding which length to install depends on how the grab bar will be used. For example, if you're putting a main grab bar on the side wall of a bathroom tub enclosure a grab bar at least 24 inches long is best. If you're adding a second grab bar for support on the shower head wall, it should be at least 12 inches long. Horizontal grab bars offer better leverage when you are trying to get out of a bathtub or up and down from a toilet, but a grab bar placed at a 45 degree angle to the toilet or bathtub's rim is better when trying to accommodate people of different heights. Angling your grab bar has an additional advantage. A 24 inch bar installed at a 45 degree angle will exactly span wall studs spaced 16 inches apart, and you can screw into the studs on each end for maximum support. When it comes to baking for sale, may I make a few suggestions?
Be sure to check your local laws and/or ordinances. In my area, any food offered to the public for sale MUST be prepared in a certified kitchen. The regulations for certification are very strict. And there is no way at all that a home kitchen can be certified.
To determine the price to charge, figure the cost of sales for each unit. A 'unit' would be either the individual serving or the whole package, or however you present them for sale. Include the price of packaging in this cost. Multiply this cost by 2.5, this would be your sale price. That would give you your 'profit' for your time & cover the expense of your electricity, or gas, or whatever.
There are a couple of good web sites that break ingredients down into cups per pound, etc, but you will probably have to measure the number of teaspoons in a container of spice yourself.

Thanks, Rusty! I do know about selling to the public from a certified kitchen vs. cooking in a client's home as a Personal Chef. Baking a few babkas for my sister is my only plan at the moment. I was trying to get a handle on how much to charge her if she asks in the future.

I just paid ~$10 for a chocolate babka at the grocery store. I'm just trying to get into making bread and looking for recipes so I should try to make babka! Is it harder to make than regular bread? Can you post your recipe please? Thanks!!

The recipe I use is from Marcy Goldman on BetterBaking.com. You can pay for the recipe, but she once had it available for free and it is out there on the internet. I give her all the credit for this wonderful coffeecake.

I make the cinnamon shmear - not the chocolate. I've decided if I want to make 3 smaller babkas from one recipe, I will increase the filling somewhat.
