sippimom -- no way! But I only have one leaf. MCM-ers unite! I think 8' x 11' would be the safest way to go, but it might overwhelm the space. The "room" is 11'8" x 18' 9". The pictures show the "dining room" half of the larger room. The DR is slightly more than half of the room near the buffet wall, so is really a 11'8" x 10' area in the larger room, with the table slightly to one side of that "area". I'm wanting the rug to basically anchor the dining area in the larger room. The other end of the room has two loungy chairs and a jukebox (quite the decorating dilemma, that one). When we still had (ugly, dirty W2W) carpet, we had a big antique rug in there that was leftover from the other house -- 10' x 13' -- HUGE! It was both too big and too small for the room. We put in cork last summer and the whole thing has been bare since then. It just needs to be warmed up. flyleft - I know, love the magic of the interwebs, no? As for the "sticking", I guess it doesn't really bother me. When we had W2W I don't think it was a problem, but that stuff was so nasty and cheap and beaten down I may have just blocked it out entirely. And the old antique rug that was there was so thin that it wasn't really grabby.

It really does depend on the other furniture in the room. I have a king with a 5x8 at the foot and it works fine- only because of the dresser, armoire and bench also prominent in the room and the traffic flow area. As far as a rug under the bed it's a personal preference, one I won't do as I like to easily dust mop underneath for constant dog hair although I do somewhat like the look of a continuous rug but then again when I see rugs under beds I think of all the dust and who cleans it.

Maybe I’m focusing on the wrong things?" I would caution you to be very careful about internalizing these images you see online. They are highly staged, have a team of professionals tweaking and moving things here and there, tight shots so you don't see imperfections, photoshopping galore. They aren't real life! Where are the science projects? Where are the plastic action figures, barbies, ponies? The sweater that someone took off and tossed on the chair, where's that? I'm 100% certain that no child had any say in a single bit of what is in these inspirational rooms. Are your grandkids old enough to consult on this? Could you ask them what they would find useful and enjoyable? If they aren't old enough to give useful input, they are probably young enough to appreciate a casual space that they don't have to be terribly careful with. I know my own kids love having a chair on their room, they love having the freedom to rearrange and decorate with their treasures, they love seeing photos of themselves with family and friends. Those are the things that make a room feel like Home rather than a picture-perfect photo shoot. Since you mentioned it, maybe you are focussed on the wrong things. Are you more concerned with impressing your children and your friends than you are with making your grandkids feel cherished? Are you putting so much pressure on yourself to create the perfect social media-approved space that you don't have any mental space to visualize the joy your family will feel in seeing you and how happy you will be to have your grandkids sleeping under your roof? Everyone on this thread agrees that the room is beautiful (a rare occurance!) and that all you need is a simple rug, a chest of some sort with a lamp or two, and a bench/chair or two. It's also rare that people agree 100% on what a room needs! So you are very very close to finished here, and once your grandkids come and add their life and luggage to the room it will come alive!

NYC has its own quirks regarding small spaces - if you are not renovating, you make do. I would just suggest a plain tall bedframe so that you can use under bed for storage (basic ones are less than a $100 on line). Add a plain bedskirt if you want to hide stuff under or leave open with decorative containers. If you own and can attach to wall, look at Vant panels if you want a headboard that doesn’t take up space. Please post lay out so we can help
