Continued Rollcall: Where are you (and your kitchen)

I loved the thread and it wouldn't let me post because they thread reached the maximum (150) replies. So can we continue here?

I'm from Woodhaven, MI (suburb of Detroit). We bought a 1999 Colonial 2.5 years ago. One wall of cabinets fell off the wall 6 months after we moved in, and the insurance company replaced our entire kitchen (cabinets, refinished hardwood floor, counters and paint). I got the granite I wanted and the hard wood floors we were hoping to refinish! We are now having an island built with statuarietto marble tops. I can't wait!

Was surprised to see only one other Detroiter on here so far.

Great thread.

Suburb of Boston and just finished a Feng Shui influenced kitchen last fall. I still haven't posted pictures yet, but I'm working on it. I still have some things we haven't picked yet...like a dining set.

Thanks, kalapointer, for the additional info. Great idea to make a weekend of it. Hubby and I have been trying to get away for a weekend for months now but each time, something has forced us to cancel our trip. Maybe this time we'll finally make it?

Oh, that would be fun, oldhousegal. Except for the one time I dragged my hubby along, I've usually gone on this tour alone. I'd love to go with other TKOers.

I mix up a tall plastic bucket of potting mix in the kitchen--garage is way too cold and the bale of mix was frozen solid by the time the solstice rolled around. I mixed 8 quarts of potting mix with one quart of MG since I bought the MG and had to use it up somehow. I use a soldering iron to poke holes--using a knife took too long and I wanted plenty of nice big drainage holes. I hate the smell but it does the job. Like others, I cut around the jug with scissors, leaving an inch or so for the hinge. Fill bottom portion with potting mix and moisten with half an empty sour cream container of water. After the first 25 or so jugs I found that moistened the soil just enough so a little drained out the bottom. Sow seeds thinly if possible. I know I sowed too many, being a newbie. I covered with just a little more of the dry potting mix for larger seeds. For the really tiny seeds I sprinkled some grit over the top of the mix. Bought the grit at the feed/seed store. A little goes a long way. I write labels with paint pen before sowing seeds or while the mix is absorbing water. Label goes in the jug on an angle so I can see it inside through the top. Tape the top and bottom together with 6" piece of duct tape opposite the handle. I fold over one corner of the duct tape for easier removal later. I didn't write the names on the bottoms of the jugs and hope I don't regret that later. Like Dee I work up about 6-8 jugs at a time. Once they're done I set them in aluminum cookie sheets until the sheet is full, then I carry them outside and set them in the container ghetto on my breezeway. The breezeway runs west to east so they're in shade but open to the snow/rain etc. My original goal was to WS 12 containers. I WSd my 200th container yesterday. Thanks to the nice people on this forum, I ended up with enough seeds to sow a lot more. My neighbor gleefully brings me a truck load of milk jugs from the recycling bin at the dump every week. The cats don't seem interested in the process and haven't even tried to climb inside the bale of potting mix. I do spill a little on the floor but so far it hasn't been too messy of a project. It's great having something of a gardening nature to do during the cold months. I use my computer to keep a log of how many jugs per day and what seeds. I also keep a list of the seeds I sowed and how many containers of each. I like the milk jugs better than the 2 liter bottles because they aren't apt to blow over when the wind howls through the breezeway. A few of the 2 liter bottles got blown over so now I've got them all surrounded with WS milk jugs. It's gonna be a busy Spring!!

Down time, a most appropriate name for my garden. It's in this mode for most of the year. May and June are the months when my garden looks it's best and then it slows down to a tangled mess for the rest of the summer, I'm not even going to mention fall. This summer was disastrous, I was laid up for most of the summer so nothing got done except for some watering which dh did for me. Some things got missed so whether they come back or not time will tell. Anyone tell me where I can find a new pair of legs? What Camp said sounded so familiar..."I am altogether harsh on myself about my garden. I am my own worst enemy though, because just when it starts to look OK, I get bored and need a change...so everything is always in a state of halfway done, chaos or wreckage. Like Flora, the dominant colour is always green but this garden obsessive (and, I am ashamed to say, greedy and demanding plant crazed mentalist)".... these words could have come out of my mouth up until now. I've never done much out front other than try to keep it looking tidy, when I did plant interesting things out there they seemed to disappear in the middle of the night or when we were out. We even came home one fall day to find someone had cut most of the hydrangea blooms off the one at the bottom of the steps. Needless to say without the protection of those dried blooms over winter, it didn't flower the next year. My bad, but the air was blue for awhile. We had to put a new water line into the house last fall so that hydrangea had to go but I managed to keep a couple of pieces and planted elsewhere. So, what to do with the little border that was dug up for the water line. I planted the Alma Potschke asters Sunny sent me, pinched twice they grew into beautiful plants just starting to bloom now. Even with the pinching they grew quite tall and the bamboo and wire stakes I ended up using were not strong enough so they needed some additional staking to keep them upright. Next year they will definitely be staked with the rebar and wire stakes I usually use. These asters have brought the honey bees that have been absent from my garden all year. I'm having to seriously rethink my garden over the winter, I will always have a garden but I'm afraid the time has come where it's going to have to be a garden where it can be left to it's own devices, so more shrubs and mulch in some of the areas where I have had perennials. The top garden I'll keep for perennials like phlox and some of the others I love but the rest has to become low maintenance. It's this or no garden at all :(. Annette

Thousand Oaks, CA (north of L.A.) Demo begins next Wednesday, after months of planning. Trying to box up my kitchen. What was I thinking when I kept saying I only needed two days to do it?

Westerville, OH and now in the midst of my third kitchen reno (three different homes).

First time I replaced cheap cabs and appliances with what I thought was first quality goods.

I was very, very mistaken. Transferred due to work.

Second kitchen was upgraded to cherry cabs and soapstone counters and what I now know to be upper-middle quality appliances after the passing of my late wife. Total DIY effort. Loved it but moved after remarrying and discovering that the Brady Bunch no longer fit into the home. (They go through 2 gallons of milk a day and two loaves of bread - good thing I bake. Maybe I should buy a cow. . . .).

Renovating current kitchen from 20 year old, truly awful builder grade cabinets and appliances to a custom, collected style with the range and DW of my dreams, appropriate ventilation and soapstone and wood countertops.

Demo is underway and had the flooring contractor out this morning to get bids on refinishing the oak hardwood floors.

I think this time I finally know what I am doing.

Hello from Massachusetts. Our kitchen is a newly built old style cape. Born and raised in this town. Recently bought land from my folks who live next door. It's wonderful for my kids to just walk over to see their grandparents. We only moved a mile or so down the road, but we still have stuff that keeps showing up to unpack. Glad the build is over and we are settling in. I still love looking at everyone's beautiful kitchens and think... maybe next time!

willtv, I *love* your house! :-) It's exactly the outside of a house that I dreamed of living in when I was a teenager--only with more brick tower sorts of things.

boxerpups, I vote yes for having a MA/Boston/south-NH get-together. I've got about 4-weeks of work left to devote on my reno, and then I can help plan. :-)

That picture was taken last March so nothing was in bloom.
Since it's built of stone, the house looks a lot bigger than it is.
In actuality, it only 1800 SqFt.
It's just the two of us so the size is about right.
We're pretty sure it's our forever home.
Now that the kitchen is done, they'll have to carry me out on a gurney ;.)

Just catching up on this tread. I'm in on a Boston/So NH gathering. We're located in Seacoast NH. Been in our house for 19 years. Went through a first floor upgrade 3 years ago. Now planning bathrooms remodel.

One of these days I'll post finished pics and info.

I'm a former Bostonian now just outside DC in a close-in MD suburb. I'm a frequent lurker but an infrequent poster, trying to figure out what to do with a galley kitchen in a smallish tract house (or maybe it was a Cape, no one is sure) that was expanded twice by previous owners.

NYC here (obviously). WE are gut renovating a 1907 prewar classic 7 apartment on the upper west side of Manhattan. It had the original everything - and not in a good way. We are now 2 weeks away from the big move in. They just put in our cabinets and are templating the quartzite counters next week. We went with a grey blue cabinet in beaded inset and with white quartzite with blue/grey veins. Love! Cant wait to post pics. :-)

Suffolk County, Long Island, NY here. We moved into our 1961 Cape in 1997. We did a couple of phases of paint facelift, then expansion, then gut reno on the kitchen this year. Saving up for backsplash, still need moldings painted, etc., but the bulk is done.
