snoring

My DH has put on a few pounds over the last few years. Recently, he has been keeping me up all night with snoring.

He doesn't have a cold, not a stuffy nose, no allergies. When I wake him to tell him to roll over he claims "he's not even sleeping yet", which, of course, is carp.

Anyway, he's been sleeping in the guest room the last few nights. Being as I'm not sleeping well anyway due to the pregnancy, I feel bad that we're apart, but grateful for the last few nights of decent sleep.

What works to help with snoring? Ear plugs for me don't work. I have tiny ears and a tiny head and ear plugs never fit, even if I cut them in half. Plus, they hurt my ears.

DH says he wants to lose weight, which I think will help, but is there a remedy that might work? Breathe Right strips? No Snore spray?

For me and the snorer in our house, separate bedrooms work. I should have done it years ago, but always thought like you... got to sleep in the same bed.

Hope, you find something that works for you.

Has he tried the Breathe Right strips? They could definitely help!

I started to hit menopause about a year and a half ago and am gradually getting used to the hot flashes and stuff. But you're right, my husband says that I've started to snore pretty loudly. I also have the dry mouth problem. Or had. My husband is a very loud snorer, has been since he put on a few pounds several years ago. He tried everything - strips, sprays, mouthguards, tape, nose clips, chin straps, etc - but finally found something called a snorender which is a kind of chin strap but much better. This really stopped most of his snoring so I tried it a few months ago when I was really snoring a lot more than normal. Hubby said that it made a big difference so I bought one for myself. It helps me keep my mouth closed so I don't have much of a dry mouth problem anymore either. That's what has helped me.

LOL! So that was the easy solution. Bob resembles my dh. I used to pinch my dh's nose when I'd wake up and couldn't get back to sleep. He finally went and got a sleep evaluation and found out he has severe sleep apnea. He has a cpap machine now.

Depending on DH's attitude, I was tempted at times to use the "PIllow method"...you know the one that holds the pillow over his face until movement stops JUST KIDDING. CPAP...best solution

If he only snores on his back, tennis ball sewn into his PJ top back (ya, like they wear them), is suppose to help prevents back sleeping.

On a group travel trip, lady took a box fan, to run in the motel room, cause of her husband's snoring. Said it helped. :o)

We had that problem and DH slept in the other room for years.
Breathe Right strips help some people, but he was allergic to the latex.
If your DH sleeps/snores on his back, see if using a pile of pillows helps. We brought a new bed where DH's side can be cranked up. That works most of the time. DH falls asleep easily, so he does not mind if I poke him and ask him to roll over.
If the snoring is not terribly loud, buy a sound machine and put it on your side of the bed.

Please do NOT feel guilty about asking DH to sleep in the other room, especially now and through the next year. You will need your sleep. Look at it this way - you will be taking care of your health and his, because it will give him incentive to lose weight, LOL!

Even though he may be on the younger side, please have him take a sleep test. He may have sleep apnea. If it not that could be sinus also. Heavy snoring, especially if he seems to take breaths stop for a second or so is one of the indications there is a problem. DH is so much better since he has the machine.

I snore. and I'm the female half of a couple. My DH is greatly disturbed by the noise. I went to an ENT (ear nose and throat doctor) who said he'll do surgery that will stop my snoring. Only it's cosmetic and insurance won't pay. It'll run $1450. And he takes installment payments. LOL! The noise doesn't bother me so much.

My DH stopped snoring after he had 4 stents put in. I have no idea if it's coincidence or not. Now he tells me that I snore.

My DH used to snore like a freight train. Now he uses a CPAP machine and not one peep out of him.

I had two deviated septum surgeries and I still snore. I also have a CPAP machine but I hate using it. My snoring doesn't bother him and it sure doesn't bother me. lol

He needs to go have a sleep study for sleep apnea. Snoring is one major symptom. It's not just an annoyance. There is no longer such a thing as too young for sleep apnea. Even children have been found to have it. Losing weight may or may not take care of it. If it does great, but he still should be checked out.

I can sure sympathize with you!! My DH used to snore so loudly that I'd have to go to the spare bedroom and even then I could still hear him. My constant sleepless nights took a toll on my health to the point I could barely function during the day. He tried several different products, but nothing worked. Finally our Ear Nose and throat doctor recommended a procedure which uses radio waves that reduce the tissue in the back of the throat. It was done in the office with a numbing agent. The only pain was a mild sore throat for a couple of days. It cured his snoring almost immediately and I'm happy to say that we live in a snore free zone now.

I agree with Wildchild that your DH should consider a sleep apnea study to rule out anything serious.

My husband used to snore.
Wish that we had known years ago that a stroke
could be one of the results of snoring
and sleep apnea!
He now sleeps with a CPAP machine, no more snoring,
he gets a better nights sleep and so do I.

My best friend since sixth grade Sue was tested for Sleep apnea and uses a CPAP machine. She came for an overnight visit and showed me how it looks. She's very comfortable with it. Sleep apnea is a serios real medical condition. Untreated it can cause sleeplessness, weight gain, high blood pressure, even DEATH. Make sure your hubby gets a check up including apnea.
