You can add whatever you want to scones Khandi to suit your own taste. Lemon zest goes wonderfully with raspberries. Or try adding, Vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom,poppyseeds, orange zest, chocolate, white or dark/milk,etc. And don't forget other fruits. Blueberries, blackberries, peaches, dried or fresh cranberries, etc.. It isn't uncommon for a few berries to get squished and I don't mind when they do. Doesn't hurt the flavour at all. Maybe the appearance a little bit. But if you are quick and have a light hand most of the berries will stay in tact. Practice makes perfect.

I think we probably all make things that other's think are wonderful, as your DH and DD did, but don't think are all that great ourselves. As Ann said, you can add other things to give the scones the flavor that you want but don't be surprised when you get asked to make them, the way you did the first time. It's all good!!!

After much trial, (but no error), my favorite has become dried cherry with dark chocolate. I really love the combination, and prefer that the taste of the scone take a supporting role to the strong flavors of the additions.
