I can't say anyting that will make you feel better. But I do know how you feel right now. I've been there before and it sucks. But, it DOES get easier and better. It does! Hang tough.

I'm so sorry to hear Motley's gone. The only good thing is she's gone to a place where she is healthy and pain-free.

I'm so sorry for your heartache. Many of us have been there too - I'm sure I speak for many others in saying that you are in our thoughts.

Thank you for all of your thoughts. Almost a year ago, I remember commenting to my DH that we were running quite a risk having 2 senior dogs and 1 senior cat around. I knew they wouldn't be with us forever, but to lose all three within the past 4 months almost feels like too much.

Just think that they are all together again at Rainbow Bridge. Sending you and your family a big hug right now!

They are together and happy but the gap they leave in our lives is too much. I'm sending you all my love and what blessings that are mine to give. Paw prints on the heart.

I've not lost a pet yet, so thankfully I can't relate. Only had my kitterz less than a year and they're about a year old, so hopefully it'll be a while. Right now, I think that I will probably just be grateful for our time together and ready for a new one after a period of healing. I've never understood people who feel guilty about "replacing" their animals... of course you can't replace the one that has moved on, but a home with no pets is barely a home at all. I'm sure that when it happens I will go all to pieces and not be quite as reserved as I'm imagining myself to be now... but this isn't about me it's about you! All this to say that I can't relate, but I'm sorry it happened to you. Someone named dlynn posted this over on the cooking forum and I think it fits... for cats too!

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old
Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife, Lisa,
and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and
they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the
family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform
the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would
be good for four-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt
as though Shane might learn something from the experience

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's
family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for
the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on.
Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any
difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's
death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are
shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly,
piped up, "I know why."

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next
stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, "People are born so that they can learn how to live a good
life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?"
The four-year-old continued, "Well, dogs already know how to do
that, so they don't have to stay as long."

Sheltiemom, I'm so very sorry. I know how it hurts as we lost our beloved kitty last fall. Please don't think of it as a hole in your heart. Just think of all the years she held a special place in your heart, and you can keep her memory in that place. Our love and our memories is all we have left.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I've been down that road many times ..at least 10 or 11 times..and it sure is tough. Your guys are together where they are happy and healthy. I hope you have remaining pets to love. If not, some day maybe.

Sheltiemom, I am so very sorry for your loss. I went through this in March, (14.5 year old dog), and it is just devastating.

Just know that your family gave Motley a wonderful life, and Motley gave your family.....well, Motley! Despite your current grief, what could be better than having had Motley in your lives?

I am so sorry for the loss of your kitty, and so sorry about the loss of your other fur friends recently too. I once lost 2 in one week (one to cancer, another to old age related things) and it was very painful to lose two friends in such close succession. I figured they needed to be together...

My senior dog just passed in early April, and like Weed said, it is devastating. I feel for you and understand where you are. Many hugs to you.

sheltiemom - I am so sorry for your loss. Your Motley had a very good life if he lived to be 17. Take your time, each person's grief is different. One day you will feel terribly and the next you will be remembering all of the happy moments you had with your beloved pet. I have felt what you are feeling too many times, my deepest sympathy to you and yours.

I'm so sorry for yout loss. I know how you feel - I lost my best buddy Napoleon in February. He was the most amazing cat - I've had cats my entire life but he was truly unique. He had a tumor in his stomach that eventually did him in, and he was only seven years old so I feel cheated out of many more good years with him. There is a cat-shaped hole in my heart too. Hang in there.
