I completely agree. The ceiling is definitely the 5th wall -- we're making DD's bedroom come into the "g'web century" as well right now, painting the ceiling a diluted version of the wall.

A thought re the back pain: have you tried a TENS unit? When I had my herniated disks flare up a couple of years ago, we found a TENS unit (used on c's list - but in perfect condition--if you can't find it used, it *is* worth paying retail for a new one, it's that good) that was the *only* thing that gave me relief (I didn't want to take pain pills). It's a brilliant invention and our family uses it regularly to relieve muscle spasm pain. I can't express how much of a difference it has made. Just a thought if you haven't looked into it yet. I've gotten to look at the ceiling at night and in the morning and during the day. What a difference! After 20 years this house is a bit tired, and the celing is giving it a much needed lift. DH also put in crown molding, nothing fancy, but looks good with our trim and 8 ft ceiling height.

Thank you for your good wishes on my back. It is a chronic thing- I've had 2 surgeries on it, and every once in awhile it flares up. This flare is the worse yet. I've heard of TENS units and that may be an option if things don't settle down.I just don't want any more surgery.

Barb5, please consider reading a small book called "Healing Back Pain" by Dr. John Sarno.

My DH has a couple of herniated discs at L4 and 5, and another disc that has some issue. He was all set for surgery after 3 months on disability, attempts at injections, pain meds (2 Vicodin at a time didn't touch the pain), everything.

Within a week of reading the book, his back pain was gone. He will tell you the book saved his life. The pain doc at the hospital told him it wouldn't last, he would be back. That was 7 years ago.

He still has all the same disc issues, by the way. Just no more pain.

I *so* wish that book had worked for me, les...I remember you suggesting it when my back went out and I always appreciated it. Guess some folks it just doesn't work for, like any particular modality--probably the TENS unit doesn't work for some folks too -- I know it worked for my back and my husband uses it on his legs and hips every so often. But it's not a cure-all for everything, just the intense muscle spasms that accompanied the herniation.

But anyway, barb, we'll be looking forward to a pic when your back feels better!

Ah, flyleft, I am so sorry it didn't work for you. You are right, nothing works for everyone. It is just that it made such a difference for my DH and several other people we know personally that I feel it is important to put the information out there. Glad the TENS units helps you.

I'm another supporter of Dr. Sarno's book! Read it many years ago. While I can't say I'm pain-free, I do think that his take on back pain makes a lot of sense. His work put to rest a lot of fears that I had about back pain, so it was a very worthwhile read.

Have grappled with chronic back pain and real limitations with lifting for 15 years. I was only 33 when this all started. All the tests show I have a healthy, normal back.

I think Sarno is on to something with the idea of accumulating tension in the body, especially in the back, creating a pain syndrome.

Flyleft, back pain is a tough nut to crack, isn't it? Sorry that you've not found a solution.

barb5 I am so glad you love your ceilings. I too was inspired by people on this forum to paint my ceilings. I started with a powder room just for fun and was hooked. Sorry about the back pain. I have problems too and it's awful.

cyn I found that BM Affinity color Constellation works well for ceilings. I have it in 3 rooms with 3 different colors.
