Roses. We're the Rose Capitol of the World and have the annual Rose Festival in October that draws tens of thousands of visitors. This year my GD will be a lady-in-waiting. We're also known for our Azalea Trails which are going on right now. We have outstanding medical facilities, the Univ. of Texas at Tyler, and Tyler Jr. College.

I'm enjoying this immensely as well--thanks to everyone! I've been tempted by Odee Pink from the ARE catalog photo--nice to know it's as beautiful "in person". :-) The Souv.d'Elise Vardon is absolutely gorgeous--now I'm having to put that on my thinking-about-yellows list. :-) Celestialrose, I have Merville and think she's just elegant. Your Belle Doria is exquisite--is she a gallica? If you all haven't posted pictures of your rare beauties at HelpMeFind.com, please consider doing so. I know I visit the site so often for help. I just now have plants large enough to submit photos of, but I hope that mine might help others who are trying to decide on a particular cultivar.

What are your favorite lesser known daylilies?

    Q

    Comments (21)
I was happy to see 'Early Days' photo. I bought that one last summer but it had already bloomed by the time I got it so I never saw the flowers. Good to know I picked a winner! One of my lesser known daylilies is 'Cousin Suzanne' (Shooter). I was surprised when it bloomed late for me here since it is listed as a mid-bloomer. What I loved especially was the substance of the flower. Substance is so thick, waxy and substantial that the blooms lasted into the next day. I loved the greenish cast when the flower first opens. This one was sent to me as a bonus from Marietta and when I got it I was a little disappointed, thinking it was just another yellow. It's wonderful. Celeste

here's my .02 cents- Calacutta/Calacotta (you say po-TATE-Oh, I say po-TOT-oh, actually I say "spud") is a MARBLE - with the majority of the stone being CALCIUM... Calcium reacts with ANY form of ACID - lemon,lime,tomatoe/tomatto,grapefruit, and anything else that has acid in it... Are you using this in a kitchen application? if so, I would STRONGLY (in the most professional sense of the word) ADVISE YOU to consider having a "textured" surface - aka: honed, leathered, antiqued..etc I did a podcast at Natural Stone 101.com (actually two on the same subject) that talks about the issue of acid etching of polished marble, textured surfaces, and sealing the stone to help retard the potential of staining... hope that helps y kevin

What is Your Area or State Well Known For?

    Q

Arkansas- The Natural State. The name means "south wind". Our beautiful lakes and rivers are a main draw for people. This state is very rich in minerals and has the only open-to-the-public diamond mine in the world. Lots of forest land and we grow rice better than any other state, along with other crops. I live near Eureka Springs, which is a tourist town also referred to as "a little Switzerland". It was attractive to people starting in the late 1800s because of the healing properties of all the springs. Ozarka water was first bottled here. Arkansas is home to Wal-Mart, too. We moved here from FL to get away from crowds and hot, hot weather. Now we have 4 seasons and no neighbors and the closest real traffic light is about 22 miles away, in a town that has just about everything we'll ever need. :)

Texas County, the largest of MissouriÂs 114 counties, comprises 1,179 square miles of Ozark Highland. With the same name as the second largest of the fifty U.S. states, it exceeds the smallest, Rhode Island, in terms of total land area

When formed in 1843, it was named after William H. Ashley, the first lieutenant governor of Missouri, but when the county was officially organized on February 14, 1845, it was renamed for the Republic of Texas

Beef and dairy cattle and logging are major industries. Long time factories like Anjelica uniform, Brown shoe and Lee jeans have closed and gone elsewhere.

I did think of one claim to fame for Lake County -- well, my town within Lake County: First planned shopping center in America, Market Square (1915). One local beauty was the model for 'Daisy' in F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby". Scions of Chicago's prominent families built 'summer houses' here, many still standing. 'Da Bears' practice here. We have a long, beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline, forested, with ravines and beaches. Abbott and Baxter pharmaceutical laboratories headquarters are here. Historic Fort Sheridan (1880's) is a shadow of its former self, half redeveloped into civilian housing. Great Lakes Naval Station keeps growing.

We're between counties, since we're getting ready to move.

Camden County--mostly known for crime, since the county seat is the #1 most violent city in the country. But also known as being the childhood home of Kelly Rippa; some of the best school systems in the country (outside of the city, of course). Nice aquarium. Lots of shopping. One town there is called "Haddonfield"--and was the inspiration for the town in the Halloween movies--the author went to school with DH, and there is even a character in one of her movies with HIS NAME!

Cumberland county--since we're new here, I only know a few. It's home to the city where Dr. Welch invented grape juice. The Cohanzick (Sp?) Zoo. Glass making used to be one of the main industries. Wheaten Village is a glass museum. DD found a place in the county where she and a friend were enjoying the scenary, taking photos, and when they looked at their pictures, there women screaming standing behind them--women WHO WERE NOT THERE when they took the pictures.

Breenthumb--you're so right. I saw the pictures, and there were definitely foggy images of people behind them--not real people, but distinct enough to make them out, to see their faces and expressions. DD and her friend were totally creeped out but, as they're also fascinated by this sort of thing--anxious to get back and take more photos.
