Did you check the price of rice too?

Even Dollar General raised prices. Their $8 bottle of Tide is now $10.

Part of the price raise is the lower 48 expects shortages in food, oil, gasoline etc and also the price for grain is the highest it has ever been, which is good for the farmer, but not the consumer.
We are seeing more Canadian products also but not sure what the price for grain and cattle are.

Funnily enough, the rice is the regular price. Our favourite basmati is on sale this week for 5.99 which is what I paid for it earlier this year.

Pasta is advertised at 88 cents for a 900 gram bag (almost 1 lb).
I'm surprised it's still being sold for that.

It seems like almost every product is up about 50�, what are people going to do?

I only buy my coffee on sale for $4.99 or $5.99. But not sure that'll happen again. LOL We sell it at work quite often and I always grab four.

I just get depressed with all these price increases. My paycheque went up 4%. But prices have gone up 10%. sigh........

I bought a $11. light bulb last week, this week it is $12. When I first started to see the price increase I started using cheaper brands like All instead of Tide. It's half the price for just as many loads. Cheaper dish washing powder and can't tell a bit of difference in the results. I canceled my expanded cable service, it's a luxury that I don't even use except 2 channels. I can afford all of the above, but it is an unnecessary waste of money.

I haven't seen any changes.
Giant has 6 pack Thomas' English muffins next week at 3 for $3.00. They were $3.39 each last week.

Thank goodness your rice is the same! I was shocked when I saw a medium sized bag of Uncle Ben's going for over $7.00.

Have you seen the price of gasoline? At my place, it jumped from $3.49 to $3.55 per gallon. It cost me over $54 to fill my tank tonight.

Hurry up rain. Wash the salt off the streets so I can switch to my summertime vehicle. It gets 50% better mileage.

Debby, I only buy coffee on sale as well. Maxwell House is our usual brand. It used to be $4.44 or $4.99 on sale, and $7.99 regular price.
Now it's $11.99 regular price, and $6.99 for the sale price.
Take a look in your stores and see if they've changed in AB as well.

It is depressing in some ways, and I too get upset at the higher prices I'm seeing, even sometimes getting worked up when I notice the high price of something I don't even buy (a loaf of potato bread over $3??!!) But I bet some of our ancestors would slap us silly for getting upset with this. I doubt any of us will ever go hungry. We have access to so much food, more than we need, and there are still cheap options, while they may or may not always be the healthiest. A time ago I saw a blog of a woman who was trying to eat on a dollar/day I think. She was having some success but I'm not sure how it turned out.

My husband and I were land lords for a long time. I love renting to the Vietnamese and listening to their experiences. One thing that especially stuck with me was, "in Vietnam one person could earn the living for a very large family, but when you got your pay check there was noting to buy. In this country everyone who can has to work but you can buy anything you want." I image they went hungry more often then anyone here does.

As far as high prices go, it can only upset me if I let it. I try not to worry about things I can not fix.

I find that so much of the price is hype anyway. We're really a society of spoiled people aren't we? Complaints about gas at $3.50 when it was over $4 a few years ago. How soon we forget. More often than not there's other options that are cheaper too. Staples, like flour, well, there's not a lot of option there short of milling your own. But for other items, I like watching prices and being informed. Buy when it's low and learn to not waste and not overstock. I just convinced my coupon-cuttin' cousin to check out Aldi for the first time and he was absolutely amazed. He's definitely a convert.

If the car gets that much better mileage, then give it a spray job once a week or so. The cost of water will be easily offset by the gas savings. I ran mine through a $3 car wash the other day to clean the film off. We haven't had much for rain or better yet the usual springtime slushy snows that makes the cars shine so nicely!

It's not that I can't truly afford it but I've changed some brands and changed some of my buying methods a bit. I've always had limits. There's some things I simply won't buy unless they meet a certain price point. Just one of my quirks. I don't like wasting money but I won't live with frostbitten hands in the house either. I've reassigned some priorities and started making fewer trips and offset a price difference by cost savings and of course time savings. Aldi has become a good friend and I also watch the clearance racks a lot now. And I put up a supply of things. I didn't need dish detergent but at 31â a bottle, I bought. Didn't need laundry detergent yet, but free after rebate, I bought. Found frozen vegetables on sale much lower than I usually pay so I bought some. I wind up being in or near stores more often these days than I used to so I monitor prices and buy needed things when I need them. Anyway, I didn't mean to turn this into a money saving thread. But I do think there's still some decent deals. Some prices are volatile and if you know your pricing you'll know when to buy.

On the bright side, a few of the highlights I've seen this week:
Peanut butter drop 33%
Bell peppers as cheap as they've been in the past year or so.
Bagged salad drop 33%
Bottled water drop 20% to the lowest I've seen it sold in recent memory at least.
Orange juice drop about 40%

While in the past couple weeks gas has gone up about 5%

All's not bad news in my area and outlook on life! :)

Jasdip, we were just in Zellers and their 910g cans of Maxwell House was on sale for $7.99. I told my husband we were taking a couple, because I doubt we'll find it cheaper anywhere else.

I don't know if it was here or another board where someone claimed about a dozen eggs costing them $1.30 where they used to be 99cents. Eggs at our store go on SALE for $1.99. Regular price is $2.49 for a dozen large. Our milk is 10 cents cheaper than Safeway. We can't keep enough in stock. We sell it at $2 BELOW cost!

One thing I no longer do: Try new things. I stick with what I know I like, because every time I clean out the fridge before garbage day, I find a barely touched container of something that got pushed to the back because it didn't taste as good as I imagined it would.

But this does speed up my grocery shopping!

Our eggs are on sale for $1.99 as well at Shoppers Drug Mart.
They sell milk the cheapest in the city as well. Usually about 30 cents cheaper than the supermarkets......$4.19

The price of coffee has gone up a lot around here! I usually buy "good" coffee and am pretty picky about it. But with cost lately, it's almost as cheap for me to buy my coffee out every day. The bags I normally buy have gone from around 7.99-8.99 to 10.99-11.99, and only last me about a week.

So I broke down and finally bought the big container of Folgers, I think it was 13.99. I have to say, I bought the darkest blend they sell and it is pretty good...comparable to the fancier kinds I usually buy. So, I'll be sticking with that from now on. That container is going to last me quite awhile.

Jasdip, Shoppers Drug Mart is having their MH on for under $6 SATURDAY ONLY!!! I'm waking up early and making a special trip to the store I work at for a few cans. I just hope we ordered in enough. I may stop at another Shoppers on my way home to grab a few more. The limit on all flyer items is four per household. Although some people bring in their mother, father, sister, brother, aunt, uncle, 12 kids, grandmother, grandmothers cousins brothers uncle twice removed, just to get as many as they can. Then the staff can be yelled at for not ordering enough product.... oh, never mind. Wrong thread. LOL

And do you know when you'll have Friskies canned cat food on again? :D I think the 3/99 cents is long gone, but "you" had them on sale regularly there for a while.

That's the *only* place we buy milk, and eggs, butter, coffee and cat food, Life brand kleenex when on sale.

I only know when the sales are when they flier comes out. I don't do any of the ordering so I'm just like a customer that way. If I ordered the product, I could tell you six weeks in advance. :-) The flier should be country wide. You can see it online through the website too!

Don't even mention buying milk at SDM..... it's a huge pet peeve for us. We work our tails off to keep the coolers filled, and don't really get paid for it...... It`s very heavy hard work.

Different SDM charge different prices in our city. Some are $4.19 and others are $4.09. They did the same thing when it was $3.99 just before the latest increase. Others charged $3.87.
