Perfect weather for planting veggie garden

I was so productive today. A beautiful weekend was predicted with no rain in sight. And I checked online and no more frost expected in zone 9. So I got peas, watermelon, cantaloupe, kentucky green beans, cucumbers, several kinds of squash, lettuce, and onions (all seed) planted in the raised beds and uncovered the strawberry plants. Tomorrow I plan to get the tomato and pepper seeds started in situ as well. Of course, I'm pooped. These old bones protest when I try to do much, but this was just the perfect time. Anyone else started yet?

I can only wish. Too cold here in New York. And it's raining today. My yard is mud!

I've started my indoor seedlings but they have to wait until the last weekend in May (zone 5). Right now they just purrrr under the warm grow lights. Do post pics of your efforts when they start sprouting...really need to get the feel of spring here.

We're at the northern end of tornado alley, so we get our fair share of them. We've got so much open space here, though, that the odds of them touching down in a heavily populated area are much more slim; they don't often hit the news outside of the province. Last summer, my in-laws were hit by a plough wind that lifted their large cattle barn roof right off the structure and flung it across the yard (news crew came and their clip made it to the national news that evening). Our own communication tower twisted and fell, just missing our house. The winds that night were nearly 100 km/h, if I recall. Lots of twisted grain bins in the ditches all over the area. When you're monitoring the live feed for Greg Johnson's storm chaser truck and he's headed pretty much for your property, though, it does rattle your nerves! We lost about half of our broccoli last summer with the storms, a little over 20 heads. The main stalks snapped right off, so there was no opportunity to recover. The rest were bent flat against the ground for a few days, but they eventually righted themselves and still produced, albeit moderately. Anything with a large leaf was hit hard by wind and hail - mainly squash/pumpkins, rhubarb and the beans. The pole beans were shredded the worst, but surprisingly recovered and managed to produce eventually. We thankfully had the pole structures braced really well. The tomatoes weathered things much better than I thought they would, as did the peppers. A lot of veggies that were flattened - literally into the mud - I thought I'd lost, then they would gradually right themselves. They're tougher than you think!

Hey, it stopped raining here but I still didn't garden as everything was so soggy after the rain all day yesterday and pouring rain overnight. You have more dedication than I did for the garden today.

If you do a cut & come again salad bed or "baby lettuce heads" it should work out fine :) fortunately, many lettuces & other greens need not be grown to full size before harvest. I usually add the maximum from both the days to germination and the days to harvest to estimate the amount of time under less than ideal conditions (i.e. shorter days, cooler weather, etc.) Some plants will come in under target others may need an additional 10% or so. Another trick is to slip the transplants directly in with the with almost full grown crop in hopes that you will harvest the old plants before the new ones grow large enough to need the space. And, some shade is okay in this case because you can use the shade from the almost-ready-to-harvest plants to transition/harden off indoor started seedlings for the outdoor full sun conditions. Just be very careful when you harvest.

too late to plant cool weather veggies?

Based upon what you're telling me it's feasible to plant warm weather veggies now, cucumbers and green beans. In fact, based upon what you've told me now is the ideal time to plant them. You also told me that it's possible to plant Romaine lettuce, carrots and turnips in July. My question is although you've recommended planting carrots, turnips, and romaine lettuce now, will the weather be too hot for them to grow and survive? Do you know of any tricks/tips to cool cool weather veggies down in hot weather? Essentially although you say I can plant them now, should I hold off and wait until later in the summer when it'll have cooled down, or will it not make a difference whether I plant them now or later towards the end of summer? I want to plant radishes and cabbage too, however would now be a bad time to plant them? Would the weather be too hot to plant them? Many of the seed packets say that you can plant cool weather veggies in mid-to-late summer, but I've no clue what constitutes as mid-to-late summer in Michigan, as I haven't lived here in years. Would it be too late to plant cabbage now or is it too hot to plant cabbage now? My concern with planting in later when it gets cooler is that it won't have enough time to mature before the snow sets in. The reason being is because it takes 70-90 days for the variety I have to mature, which doesn't include germination time, which is 7-10 days. I'm afraid if I plant cool weather veggies too soon, they'll just die due to weather being too hot and if I plant them too late then they won't mature until after winter starts, which at that point, they'll die due to weather being too cold.

Oh, Wish it was time to plant here. Would like to know what variety of lettuce and tomatoes you are planting?

Lettuce: Black Seeded Simpson, Grand Rapids, Bibb and Romaine.
Tomatoes: Russian Black Krim, Sweet Million, Hybrid Sun Gold, Red Target, Ildi, Jelly Beans, Lemon Boy, Juliet, Brown Berry, Vita-Gold, Big Bite, Fourth of July, Park's WhopperMortgage Lifter, Jaune Flammee, Big Beef, Big Mama, and Sweet Baby Girl.

LOL, I thought about starting some peas soon but now the ground is covered in 5 or 6 inches of snow.

Donna, your garden sounds yummy!!! I've got another month to wait for the frost date to pass. The only thing I'm going to grow this year are tomatoes and chives. Maybe cilantro. I've never tried to grow it, but this past year we've come to really like it.

Well, it's 4Âº and about two feet of snow, so it might be a while before we can plant. Happy gardening to you.

I did a lot of cleanup and weeding yesterday to get the raised beds ready for planting. I have beets, lettuce and potatoes already coming up. I planted an artichoke plant yesterday. The rhubarb is up and doing good. I will plant a lot more when I get back from my trip.

DH put together a small sliding glass greenhouse that my neighbor gave to me. It was left by the old neighbors when they moved in and he was going to haul it to the dump. I also have a HFGH so will be starting lots of seeds this year like heirloom tomatoes and peppers.

I'm glad to hear sdomeone is out there planting.

There was a blurb on the news the other day about our snow cover. We haven't seen the ground since November 30th. That's 100+ days with snow. The record here is 134 days I think. We're suppose to get to the low 40's by Tues. and Wed. Come on Spring.
