I give Drs. Foster & Smith Joint Care 2. As far as being the "best" - as long as it has the proper ratios of ingredients, and the supplier is reputable, I don't think there's a "best". The ingredients are the same.

I did look into giving glucosamine/chondroitin/msm intended for humans, but from what I can tell, one of the ingredients is too high for dogs.

Fish oil can also be beneficial for joints, and is also good for their coats. Here's a Google search about that.

The most bioavailable joint supplements are glucosamine HCL and chondroitin sulfate. Other forms of glucosamine and chondroitin are poorly absorbed. The best ratio in dogs is glucosamine HCL 1500 mg with chondroitin sulfate 1200 mg. MSM has not performed well under scientific testing, so I don't give it to my dogs. It's not harmful, just not useful.

I give my dogs, husband, and myself Kirkland Signature Joint Care Plus from Costco. It is USP certified, which guarantees the product is what it says. It costs $21 for 190 tablets, which at 6 tablets a day consumption in my household is a darn good deal. I also give fish oil capsules to the dogs and husband and myself as weed30 mentioned.

We give Thor, our senior mastiff, Canine Cortaflex, a liquid supplement containing MSM, glucosamine, and chondroitin. The maker offers a money-back guarantee if you are not pleased with the results. It is expensive (we buy 4 32-oz containers for $50 each; 32 oz. lasts about 3 months on a maintenance dosage, half that time on a loading dosage) but nothing else we tried worked as well. I also give Thor fish oil daily.

Thor has partial ACL rupture in one knee and we did not want to do surgery. We had him on Rimadyl and were looking for supplements. We tried Cosequin and other joint care capsules, but could not reduce the Rimadyl dosage. Our area mastiff rescue coordinator recommended Cortaflex, which she gives to all her mastiffs. We've been able to decrease Thor's Rimadyl dosage significantly. Thor seems to be in no pain -- he now wants to run with the younger dogs and is out walking easily and happily around our large yard. He is comfortable getting up and lying down.

I forgot to mention, my 2 dogs with joint disease also get Duralactin, which is especially helpful for my old Rottie. The others do not have joint problems, so they are on glucosamine/chondroitin and fish oil for prevention.

Mazer I have to disagree with your above statment when it comes to Veterinary clinical trials and dogs, as there have been many done and proof of such improvements for many different supplements and their uses.
Also as far as ascripton there are many known side effects to this with dogs.
And while I am on the subject I would recommend any dog that is on a long term NSAIDs to check with their Vet about the use of something to coat the dogs digestive track prior to administering a NSAID such as "sucralfate" just for one example.
And I might as well mention my favorite joint supplement and that is Flexicose. It's very easily digested compared to other joint supplements.
