Question re efficacy of electronic ciggie substitute

I've heard some discussion of the electronically operated system that gives ciggie addicts a shot of nicotine to help them wean themselves off of the unhealthy/filthy habit.

A friend, who needs more lung and general physical trouble like he needs a hole in the head, is considering using them.

Do you have any suggestions, experiences, etc. to offer as to how well they work? How successful at getting folks off of the habit? And length of time involved? Other ideas?

I need to check also at www.quitnet.org, that many have found very helpful while quitting.

You may be assigning to perlite that which is probably more rightly attributed to gravity. I'll explain. Even if there was a consistent volume of perlite mixed evenly into the soil from top of pot to bottom, it wouldn't have much impact on either the drainage (flow through) rate, how much air the soil holds, or the height of the perched water table. If you mix perlite into pudding, it doesn't increase aeration, drainage, or the ht of the PWT because the pudding simply surrounds the perlite and by doing so, rods of of any significant value UNTIL the perlite becomes a very significant fraction of the soil. Pudding + 15% perlite yields a medium with virtually all the physical characteristics of pudding, but perlite + 15% pudding is a different story. In your case, when using the heavy medium, the soggy layer at the bottom of the pot would have been there anyway, but that's because gravity dictates that the water moves down in the pot until the capillary attraction of the soil is exactly as strong as the pull of gravity. The perlite, in smaller volumes, can't change that balance, but it does take up some space that would otherwise be occupied by water, so it reduces the o/a water retention of the soil without significantly increasing aeration or the ht of the PWT. When using soils that don't support significant volumes of perched water, you get a much more even colonization of the soil by roots. Since the entire medium is well-aerated, you don't get the roots running round and round the inside pot wall looking for (growing only where there is ample) air, though roots will start circling if the planting is left to go badly root bound. Hey Al, just wanted to make sure that 2 years later all this advice is current. Some of my gritty mix is now just about 2 years old also. It seems to be holding up but I got to thinking, like some of those in this thread, that it sure would be nice to have a permanent mixture for the long term plantings, by withholding the organic ingredient. Plus it's one less ingredient to have to buy and later screen. I see your main purpose for including it was to lessen the fears of potential gritty mix users that plants couldn't possibly grow in it. It's also used to average the particle size and water retention of the two other ingredients. I use FP to fertilize and look after my plants often enough that this isn't a fear of mine. I utilized a 1:1 ratio of Cherrystone:Turface for two basjoo banana trees planted in the ground here in zone 4. I have heavy clay and when I grew them the last time, they grew slow and their corms later rotted over the winter. I also don't think I properly watered/fertilized. So this year after reading your posts in the link below, I upped the FP by 4x to 1 tsp of FP per gal, rather than 1/4 tsp I used before, and brought the PH down to 5.5 with vinegar rather than the unacidified 7 of my tap water. I know you water with this dosage weekly with outdoor plants but I watered with it almost every day during the hot summer days with no apparent issues. I found that this amount of FP was too much for the indoor plants though... I also experimented with digging about a 4-5 gal hole where I planted the bananas and poured in the 1:1, so at least some of the soil near the corm and roots didn't have to deal with the heavy clay. The plants grew waaay faster this summer and hopefully it'll help the stems/corms survive this winter. I utilized the 1:1 before reading your post in this thread about using a higher ratio of granite/cherrystone to compensate for the small particle size of the turface. Even though the basjoo's did great in the 1:1, I'm guessing in a pot, a proper ratio (2:1 or 3:2 like you mentioned) would be a bit more important. Is this a safe assumption? many herbal treatments have not been researched and therefore "validated" by modern medicine, but that doesnt mean they dont work. whether it is prescription or herbal medicine that gives you the results you need, I dont think it really matters. There is much that doctors do not know about substances, or even proven medical therapies, so if something works for you, then I don't think it needs to necessarily be proven, that may come in time, but we're not idiots, we know what works for each of us, and it may not have the science (yet) to back it up, and we may not know why something is working, but we know when we see the results. I am seeing a specialist at the moment who told me a story the other day. she said she went to an international conference on something (I can't remember what), and there was a particular side effect of a medication that was listed by the speaker as "unrelated" to the medication. It wasnt until another doctor put up their hand to say they had the same side effect of the drug that things got going, by the time the lecture finished, there were 25 "experts" who also reported the same "unrelated" side effect. what she was saying to me, is that it's not until a bunch of doctors concur that they start to question something, and that she basically has an open mind to these things because of that. I told her of a particular positive effect I was having, and she said she had heard of that symptom before from other patients, but I was the first person to tell her it got better because of such and such treatment. She is an expert in her field, and it was very reassuring that she keeps such an open mind. many of us I'm sure could tell of doctors telling us "that's not posssible", or "that is not listed as as side effect etc". my point is, we should never forget that science is only a small way along the process of understanding the human body and how it responds to many things, so while doctors like to make us feel silly at times, trust your own judgement as well, your own experiences may not been proven yet, but it may also be a matter of time before science accepts what many people already report, whether it be prescription or herbal medications. Just because something hasn't been proven, does not make it untrue.

Hello -- OP here. I think the most satisfying threads on this forum are those where you find out whether the problem was solved or resolved and/or if everyone lived happily ever after. So, here's the update: I was able to find both washer and dryer locally! After being told that the distribution channel had dried up, I learned from posting here that I could find one or probably both on the internet (thank you again, deeageaux); but by good fortune, a new appliance outlet store opened last month within delivery range, and they had both units. Yippee! I had originally ordered them in white, but my now-installed anthracite units were new-in-box and $400 less in cost. Nice to save the money, but the most important factor here is the "now-installed" adjective. I'd been without a W/D for over two months, so ditching the time-intensive laundromat experience, plus having the units I'd researched and chosen here in the house, has made me very, very happy and grateful that all has worked out to this point. Washer and dryer have been in use for a few days now, and I am amazed at how much better they work than my 15-20 year-old (unmatched set) front-load washer and dryer. I do have some questions about their optimal performance, but I think these issues relate more to changing from a top loader to a front loading washer and the more modern, moderate heat dryers rather than being specific to my Bosch machines. I am using the search function on this site but may start a new thread to ask for your insight and experience. Thanks to you all, Helen **As an amusing side note, the very day after I posted my encomium about my Asko dishwasher, it developed a leak that dripped water for 24 hours or so right over the newly completed bathroom /laundry cabinet renovation directly underneath. In my opinion, this appliance did deserve to go out with a bang after years of faithful service, so all's good here, and we did replace with another Asko. ;o)

I can give you my story.

DH quit smoking (for good) 4 years ago. I tried to quit at the same time but was not successful, and have tried numerous times as well. Once, in 1990, I quit smoking for 2 years but I never got past the urges and it was a constant battle. The only reason I was able to stop for so long was because I got pregnant during that time. Once the baby was born and several months past, I started again.

The problem was I never really wanted to quit. I like smoking. But my asthma just kept getting worse and worse to where even my inhalers werent doing the job. So I actually wanted to quit, just for that reason. But bad habits are hard to kick.

Last january I ordered a new little ecig starter kit, tried it for a short time and it just didn't do it for me. Smoking an ecig is NOT the same as having a cigarette. Along came June and I decided to give it another shot. This time I prepared a little better, found e liquid that I liked instead of just going with whatever I could find in my area. In a short time I upgraded again.

So, now I have not had a cigarette since Father's Day, and now I use a no nicotine liquid. Some days I still get those nicotine pangs so I will use e liquid with the nicotine level equivalent of a light cigarette for a few hours.

It's unbelievable how much better I can breathe. Weeks have gone by where I have not used my inhalers. Right now the pollen count is high and I have been using one most days, but it's due to pollen, not cigarette smoke. I'm happiest about my breathing. Before quitting cigs, I was using my inhalers countless times per day.

I'm less happy about my weight gain. Supposedly, nicotine speeds up the metabolism. I have a sluggish metabolism so have gained some weight.

My thought is that just buying an ecig starter kit is not always going to work for everyone. The right equipment, which is found by experimentation, is what made me successful in stopping smoking.

But, it is just another addiction.

I'm pleased that you've been succesful, so far, with your Quit.

I often kid folks about their addiction to coffee, when I see (so many of!) them carrying one of those paper cups along the street.

I love my ecig! When I can't have a real smoke it comes in handy. I have the nicotine drops and I think the ecig works just as well. I only use 3 drops in the morning and 3 at night. Battery, once I charge it in the morning, lasts me all day. I get my supplies from www.cignot.com

My DS has been using the E-ciggies since November and he is very happy with them. He said he feels better, does not wheeze and doesn't stink. He flew here for a visit and could take a couple of puffs on his e-ciggie on the plane, in a restaurant and even in my house. NO ONE smokes tobacco in my house. I liked that it did not produce smoke, just a water vapor that was not offensive. I have read that e-ciggies are not intended as a stop smoking aid. When DS shoveled my snow he did not have to come inside for a break, which he usually does because he used to wheeze.

Like anything else, OJ, once it catches on everybody wants a piece of the pie. There are so many different kinds made by so many different companies. Probably the best bet is to go online, research and read reviews.
I quit smoking almost a year ago and haven't looked back. I used the patch. I was only able to use it for 2 weeks and it starting breaking my skin out with a rash at the patch site. I had tried to quit before and had used the ecig, but it did not work for me. My sister on the other hand used the patch, but when the craving would get really bad she would use the ecig to get over the hump. If at first you don't succeed, try try again. Different things will work for different people. What worked best for me, keeping my mind very busy. I read 4 novels in 2 weeks and read 1 of them twice. If your friend likes to read or do anything that keeps your mind from thinking about smoking, use it. After that 2 weeks I could cope with the cravings. I still have cravings once in a while, but now I can sit in a crowded bingo hall full of chain smokers and it never bothers me, but somedays I just want just 1 cigarette, but I haven't had not even a puff off of one since April 16, 2012. I won't ever smoke a cigarette again, I know if I smoked one it would lead right back to the addiction. My new goal is to lose the 15 pounds I have gained in this year of not smoking. Wish me luck.

Good wishes going your way, curled up (with a book?) Sue ... for persisting with your quit ...

... and for shedding those unwanted pounds.

Think of them as excess baggage - that's costly on planes ... and sometimes in real life, as well.
