Marble kitchen counter top

I would love some advice with a kitchen design problem. We are renovating our kitchen and have planned a large dark wood island (to match dark stained heart of pine floors) with a Calcutta Gold marble top, and a white Shaw farm sink. We had planned on using a single large slab of Calcutta gold marble for the island.

Our designer said we would need a 130 inch long rough slab before cutting for the design and we are having trouble finding one that large. There is not much room to redesign the size due to appliances beneath. She presented the idea of 2 pieces with a seam (hard to match veining? maintenance?) or a mixed wood top with marble just around the sink area. It would be about 2/3 wood, 1/3 marble with marble piece slightly below/recessed in relation to wood surface. Our cabinet maker estimated he could build the top for around $2000.

Any experience with mixed wood/marble counter tops or wood counter tops in general? Any opinions on 2-piece marble tops with a seam?

Thanks in advance, Jeff.
